View Full Version : Does anyone like the greenscreen?

Because I certainly don’t. When I see the show I’m thinking “Totally Overproduced” and not “Totally Rad”. It feels like we’re back in the 90s with ZDTV and Leo Laporte talking to CG characters. You'll notice that when they started to phase out the greenscreen/CG stuff the show quality and reach of the audience broadened and they became their most successful (as TechTV) when they simplified the shows. I don’t believe that the greenscreen does anything that a lower third couldn’t with less production time and certainly does nothing to improve the rad-ness of the show.

I think the Diggnation-style setup of just a couch and some beers would be a much better solution. Not only would it take less time to do, it would give the show a more friendly and conversation feel. When the hosts are standing it feels like they’re reading a script to you, much more like a presentation and less like a conversation. It might even help with the hosts being more comfortable with each other and getting a better flow, which while not as big of a problem as it was in the first episode is still somewhat noticeable.

Just my two cents.

Did you get "two cents" from the Simpsons?

I've actually started to like it, because I think it goes really well with the show in some weird, tounge-in-cheek, way.

I believe it may be that it kind of fits with the intro, the mini-intros to the different show segments, the explosions and all that.

It's not supposed to be like diggnation. The green screen makes the show unique. The standing was awkward at first but I've gotten used to it.

I understand that it's not suppose to be just like Diggnation, but the format works. It's comfortable and could be more of a "Revision3" format instead. The Broken and to a lesser extent Systm both use the format to great success (when they release episodes).

I understand wanting to use corny effects and backdrops as some sort of creative irony, but it really just makes the show feel cheap.

I guess I'm just disappointed because I was hoping for a more apt replacement for Geekdrome and got some ZDTV reminiscent over produced public access show. I was especially excited because Alex and Dan were going to be on it, but I really don't think their particular styles shine in this format.

But hey, I had a feeling I was probably the only one who felt this way. I still think the show is good, and maybe I'll get used to it.

I love the green screen. It works with the campy concept of the show. TRS is not Digg...

I love the green screen. Ditto. Greenscreen is cool - and it fits the retro 80's throwback theme to the show.

Oh, and to the peopelthat don't like them standing ... did you watch the "behind the scenes" segment where they were assembling the BAR STOOLS.

Some people will hate people having some succes just for the sake of it.

In Australia, we have a term for it - Tall Poppy Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_poppy_syndrome).

Geez, If I wanted to see two or three drunken gits sitting on a couch talking bullshit, I would watch diggnation.

What you call "over-produced", I call polished. All the little visual inserts and post-production tricks that the editor does adds to the charm of the show. Most of these would be prohibitively difficult without a green screen. Being able to pull-out the hosts into their own layer makes things a lot more versitile than just sittiing on a couch.

In addition, did it ever occur to you that nobody was interested in seeing yet another diggnation clone? I certainly don't. I love my diggnation boys. But, I don't think it works because two drunken fools sitting on a couch talking smack is a real good format. It works because of an undeniable chemistry between Alex and Kevin.

In any case, It's funny that people online think that they have a better idea what kind of show the show makers want to make. It's kinda like sending a letter to the producers of "Lost" that says, "Dude, I really like the show, but being on a island is, like, really limiting. I think having the people totally lost in central park is a much better solution."

PS. I love the way the editor is kinda like a fourth personality on the show.

ANYTHING that isn't simply people sitting on their couch or in their living room at this point is greeted with open arms by me. I don't care what that set up does for some people, I would rather something that is at least unique like a green screen be used then see another video podcast of people sitting on their couch. I want to see sets and cut away segments and nice on screen graphics (lower thirds and all that stiff) and less people sitting on their stupid couch drinking.

Podcasts need to grow a bit.

They did something similar in my town, Big Brother in a caravan in the centre of town. It lasted a week.

Oh, they had this thing on PBS called "Colonial House" where they built early seventeenth century cottages on the coast of Maine and had people recreate the life in an early New England colony. It was pretty funny when one of the guys slipped out and walked a few miles and hitched a ride to the local pub.

I would just like to point out that this is a show in which every segment is ended with a fist-hitting explosion of radness. Greenscreeny special effects over the top goodness is what this show is all about.

And I love it.

I'm just going to say this (and maybe I shouldn't, but here goes):

Regarding the greenscreen... you haven't seen everything yet... We have plans... we have plans...

I sincerely hope that your plan is as awesome as this was (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Arcade#.22The_Video_Zone.22).

Edit: Oh Jeff, I am faster than you >:]

Looks like an overwhelming 'yes I like the greenscreen' from fans. But I suppose some people have to complain about something just to complain. :D

Its not the green screen I don't like, its the backgrounds. I wish that instead of some cheesy photoshop work it was footage from trailers of a movie they were talking about, or footage of a game they're talking about. Something more interesting.

I think the green screen is one of the things that helps me love this show more and more.
I totally missed the TriForce in the background of the Video game segment, and squeled like a school girl when I caught it after a few episodes.

Plus it allows the segments to have completely different feels. It helps keep them seperate but similar. You can tell just by looking at the scene, what they are talking about at the moment.

The green screen has grown on me.
I wish they had actually sets like what they have on the green screen.
But I know that it is expensive and space is probably a problem so I can understand why not.

But hey Thumbs UP :)
love the show

the pigeon lady might have been nice in the end....
but i know we were all frightened when we first saw her.

Just wanted to post after voting that I love the greenscreen! I think it totally adds to the show. The little things that get to go up in the background as they are talking and stuff really add to the show.

I especially loved when Dan got his birthday gift in Ep 8. The green wrapping was sweet! ;)

Definitely like the green screen. The green Christmas wrapping paper killed me! It was great!

I do however think that it very much fits into the style of the show and it helps define it. I dig it.

Dan's green present was totally rad with the greenscreen.

I think that they need more green props in general just to kick up the rad another notch.

I would totally LOVE if they would do a show, or at least a segment, where they were wearing green shirts. It would be Totally RAD! :)

i dig the green screen, but appreciate the "away time" in other rooms or in public. I find when they are in public at a restaurant or somewhere, theres too many distractions to them and the viewer and may hinder them being able to go crazy and be goofs. I think the way the have it laid out is fine to me

Yeah, I love the segments where they are out and about. I really don't think there's anything that needs to be changed on the show...they are doing a tremendous job. I really think TRS will eventually become the top podcast around. Between the content, humor, editing, fresh segments, and probably other things I can't think of at 1:17AM, it's really an awesome show. With a little money behind it, I think it could easily be on a cable network or something like that.

Keep up the great work guys!
