It depends what kind of games you're into. Personally I'd say DS.
I enjoy the interactivity that it brings into the games. Elite Beat Agents and Wario Ware are great examples. If you're more into shooters and the generic games then I'd grab a PSP. Also the PSP can browse the net (although the DS Browser, which although costs extra, is coming out in June)

I'm hopefully getting a DS for my birthday this weekend, so that'd be my choice. Depends whether you want a pure gaming machine or something that's more of a multimedia device.
Pretty much the same as your choice between a Wii and a PS3/360.

i have a ps3 and a 360, I like all game types, i jus want something that will last a long time about 3 years maybe? btw does the ds has any sort of media options?

Nope, the PSP does, but if you're into that then I suggest you just get a device that does media only. It seems that they tried to do too much with the PSP, not focusing in the the gaming part too well. BUT!!! The PSP has a great screen for watching movies, having said that, you probably will need a big memory stick (more than 2 gig) that's around 60 dollars.
Bottom line: get DS if you want to play many great games, or get PSP if you want many "light" features, and want a few great games.
I would just get a DS and a separate portable media player.
This is coming from a former PSP owner.

Actually I think there is quite an active DS homebrew scene. A quick search online should get you the info.

Ok, heres a breakdown.
HOMEBREW
homebrew on the psp costs nothing extra, but to do it, you need to pick up an older psp that can be downgraded, and then upgraded to a custom firmware. This while process is kind of tedious and scary and could kill your psp if done wrong, but it's totally worth it when you are done, homebrew usually looks great on the psp and *cough*backupgames*cough* is a nice ability to have.
homebrew on the DS is much easier, but you have to buy a special cartridge that has a spot for a removable memory card, which you can put homebrew and roms on it. Once you do that, just throw it in your DS and turn it on. Nothing to flash to the Ds and no chance of hurting your system.
MULTIMEDIA
Multimedia, there is no comparison, the PSP wins. The DS can't natively do anything other than games, with that special cartridge I spoke of earlier, you can play some music and some movies. However, net on the psp is great to have if you are traveling or...ahem....on the toilet. I use my psp a lot for that alone. You can even download stuff you your memory stick from the 'net. Movies look great as well on the psp, and whether you want to buy them or not, umd movies look great too.
GAMES
I think that the DS beats the psp hands down on games. I own both, and while I love my psp, for some reason it starts to bore me. It might be the lower battery life, or whatever, but it does. I think it is because a lot of the games on the psp are just ports of console games, which doesn't work that well in a portable format. On the DS, they have figured that out and they make awesome games that work great portably. Judging by what I play more (the DS) I would say go with the DS. With me they are on equal footing (homebrew and backup games for both) and I still choose the DS over the PSP. That's my two cents.
If you get a DS, spring for a new one and get a lite, don't go for a used gray brick, they aren't nearly as cool.

If you want to play fun and new stuff, DS
If you want to play PS1 games you enjoyed 5-6 years ago, PSP
Not saying the DS doesn't have remakes, but really the only good stuff on PSP are do overs (Valkyrie Profile, GTA)
I'd say get a DS Lite

I'll hopefully be getting one for my b-day as well. i didn't bother to research between the psp and the ds, I already know that i'll love the ds for it's games. If you do need a little push over to the ds side, get the pc demo for puzzle quest. trs got me hooked on it, and the games are pretty cheap as well. $30 for puzzle quest or brain academy.
I'm asking for a ds lite (black version).

i have had the psp since launch...DS wasnt even an option as i think its too much of a kiddy's/girly console..yeh it mite hav amazing games... but if your a graphics whore then the psp is for you
i primarily use it for its multimedia functionality.. particulary the RSS Channels...great thing to stream podcasts over the net...(dont know why sony dont tout it more...its the only device that does it reliably!!!!)

Tough call. I have both (and run homebrew shenanigans on both) and I'd hate to think of giving one up. I was frustrated for a while with the game selection on PSP--because, as a previous poster stated, they were releasing lots of ports and rehashes. That's become the case less and less. There are some really great games out for the PSP now.
Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong either way--unless watching movies is important to you, in which case, it's gotta be the PSP.

I use to have both but then I decided that having food was more important than owning a brick so I sold my PSP. I will starve to death before I get rid of my DS. *waits quietly for Zelda: Phantom Hourglass*

I also have both. I havn't played my PSP for prolly a year now. I havn't seen one single game for it that I would want to play. Lumines was ok. Burnout was ok too I guess.
Now my DS, I have one for me, one for my 11y/o kid, and one for my 6 y/o kid. We play Mario cart against each other all the time.
Sorry, I'm rambling, so the bottom line is there are soo many great games for the DS. It's not even so much about the touch screen either. Definately get the DS (lite)

I had the PSP since launch - kept it for a few months and then sold it to a friend. I wasn't really impressed. Another friend of mine has the DS, and it's quite awesome (especially with Puzzle Quest), but not awesome enough to get me to buy one. I'm happy with my 360 for now. My life isn't portable enough at the moment for a portable game player.

I owned a PSP, but never ever used it, I sold it to a bud, got me a DS and have been loving it ever since.
The DS is cheaper, sturdier, and has better games.

If you do need a little push over to the ds side, get the pc demo for puzzle quest.
This is the least researched post in this forum I've ever seen. Puzzle Quest is not only on PSP, but it is actually BETTER on the PSP in almost every way. Except for the fact that all my friends have the DS version and I'm stuck playing multi- on this spotty port.
I own both a DS and PSP, and do love both of them dearly. I take at least one of them almost everywhere I go. Recently, its been DS for Pokemon, but I'd say on an average week I turn to PSP moreso as I use the video functionality quite a bit. Both systems have their advantages, and honestly, I recommend both. I can name a bunch of must-own games for both systems, and choosing between the two would be like choosing between your kids... it just can't be done!

I was wondering the exact same thing, and after reading these posts I am even more torn than ever before. I would likely use the player on flights. PSP is nice for movies and podcasts, but DS has the fun games... *sigh*

There are plenty of fun games on the PSP--many with visuals and audio the DS can't hope to compete with...
Puzzle Quest
Killzone: Liberation
Daxter
MGS: Portable Ops
GTA Liberty (and Vice City) Stories
Ratchet
Outrun
Syphon Filter
MLB 07
They're both great systems with great games.

For me it's the DS. The PSP is treated like a PS2, and so in the end you're getting a console like experience. I personally want something a little different. I don't tend to travel with my DS since when I travel somewhere I typically like to get away from the computers and stuff. It's mostly used as a 15 minute gaming session in bed to finally exhaust myself. When I feel really sick for some reason I like to play DS and not look at computers and TV's. perhaps it's the small screen?

Has much as I like the PSP design, I'm also going to have to endorse the DS.
They both have great games.
But, the DS games are really more interesting. Nintendo really did a great thing with the touch screen. You've been able to see unique games developed just for that platform that are really appropriate for hand-help gaming. I think specifically about games like "Brain-Age." These are games that are not only not on the PSP, but could never be on any other platform.
Most of the PSP games are just remakes, retreads or ports from full-size consoles. That was the idea of the PSP, to bring a full size console experience to your hands. I think the PSP succeeds at this. It's also a fair media player of you can afford the memory sticks.
Unfortunately, I don't think the full-size console experience is well adapted for hand-held gaming.
The DS is a real winner in my book.
PS. Get married, then you can own both.

heres some homebrew linkage:
You'll need one of these:
http://www.m3adapter.com/SLOT-1/main.htm
Search around on the 'net for te best price, because they don't sell directly from that site. This is the one I have, and it's awesome, but you can in addition get a cart that goes in your gba slot to play gba homebrew and roms. I didn't bother with that though.
Next, check out
http://nintendo-ds.dcemu.co.uk/
to get a lot of your homebrew apps. After that, just seach the 'net for other sites, the scene is pretty strong.

I have an R4 (http://r4ds.com/index-en.htm) I never have to buy a game again, but it doesn't run that much homebrew. But still, with that or the M3 you can download games but it on a micro sd card, but that micro sd card into the adapter, put that adapter in the DS and you're good to go.
Before people start yelling at me for not supporting the developers, I bought tons of games before I got an R4.

Okay, just to clear this up, I am not a Nintendo fanboi, I actually dislike nintendo. I hate both the Wii and the gamecube, and I hate how they consistantly release a flawed handheld and then make a good version of it a year later. But for me, the DS lite was the only way to go.
The difference to me isn't even the stylus, its that the PSP seems to be trying to make mobile games more like console and PC games, whereas the DS is just trying to make better hand held games.
Both have their merits to be sure, but I would rather play killzone on my PS2. Games like trauma center though were what I was looking for, and its not even because of the stylus, its just the type of game you get on one versus the other.

most of the Anti PSP comments on here sound like they go back to a year ago. There are a bunch of really great new PSP games that are not ports. The comment about homebrew only working on older PSPs isn't really true. If you buy one now it is quite likely that you can simply run the current homebrew hack. Check the afterdawn site for full info. I'm not saying anything bad about the DS, it's a good gaming machine. My point is really that for those into better graphics and a robust multimedia machine should look into PSP.
Case is closed with the fact that he's already purchased a PSP, I just wanted to set the record straight was all.

I'm personally a huge fan of the DS in all of its touchscreen glory, but there are a few choice PSP titles out there that may not necessarily justify the purchase of a PSP system to the average gamer, but the PSP is still the only way to enjoy sweet titles like MGS: Portable Ops, Ratchet and Clank, Lumines, and how about LOCO ROCO!
Battery life for the PSP doesn't help it's cause much either :S

Maybe I'll just post my favorite PSP games that I own:
Killzone Liberation
Syphon Filther
Daxter
Lego Star Wars II
Ridge Race
Twisted Metal
Medievil Resurrection
Field Commander
There are lots of others, but I'm not made of money so this is all I've bought.

This is sort of like admitting you have no idea what the PSP Killzone game is.
Field Commander--totally forgot that one, satori. Great game.
