View Full Version : Left 4 Dead - Coop Zombie videogame
Really awesome zombie game coming out for the PC and 360
The video is of a preview from 1up, and just the way they describe their "oh shit" moments from playing the game is amazing, especially when they talk about a hospital level and having to wait on the roof for extraction and getting overwhelmed by zombies.

If this is the same as the game play videos from about a month ago those zombies look terrifyingly quick. They flood that house SO fast. A small ark is going to have to be built to survive the flood of obscenities that is going to flow into my headset.

I disagree, I think it still holds up, not for much longer, but I think it holds up, especially for this type of online co-op experience.
Edit: Just read your other post. Sorry bro.
Edit 2: Zombie Oblivion??? um, not bad....I got to tell you this is the game I have always wanted, a Live games with more then 2 players trapped in a Zombie infested city. It looks amazing, I hope it's released this year and I can not wait to play this at night, lights turned off, surround sound kicking, and three of my closest Live friends fraging. With the experiences changing every time you play depending on your path and how well (or not well) you are doing the replayablity should be huge.

The game is called Left 4 Dead, yet only 1 person on a console can play.
I'm out.
Hey, do your x-boxes come with 4-controller capability? Or is it just mine. I think it might be an error in manufacturing because I have several controllers but no games work with it. Even more strange, on my old first-gen xbox, i have 20 game I an play 4-player co-op on with buds.

lol, I see your sarcasm and I appriciate your pian though I do not share it. Unfortunately the market research says that most gamers play alone, either alone or on-line with friends most of the time. So dev's need to pool there time time make right what is going to be most likely used more often. Being that you would rather play in the same room with friends indicates that this type of marketing is aimed at the complete opposite direction, that's unfortunate.
I am curious, what games do you play that support your needs???

All I know is, I didn't buy a 32" HDTV to split it up 4 ways.
In my opinion, FPS games especially have Entirely too much going on to cram into a fourth of the screen.
i'm really excited for the game and 4 player coop is going to be a blast.

I'm pretty excited for this game as well. I really like the idea of 4 player coop. I love playing gears of vegas 2 T-hunts with my buddies. I can't imagine how much fun we'll have with 4 of us together totally surrounded with zombies to pratice our aiming on.
I'm also interested to see the single player version...I want to know where the story arc is going and how they craft this one. Multiplayer is the draw for me in this one, but I almost always play through everygame I get in the single player mode. i just hope the friendly AI is good enough to protect me. heck...if it's half as fun as Dead Rising I'll enjoy this title.

There are not games in this generation that support not just my, but alot of people's needs. All the consoles are disappointing or underachieving in some way this time around, at least so far.
On the first x-box there were many splitscreen 4 player co-op games, even thought it still was not many. On this new x-box, there is GRAW 2 and that's it other than Marvel Alliance

Yes, but I don't know if any games yet support it. I mean, for example, you could have 4 DualShock 3s active, along with two Rock Band guitars and one drum set, but you can't actually play 7 players in a game that I'm aware of (yet).
Also, I just remembered that Nintendo supports at least 5 players simultaneous for several Virtual Console games such as Dungeon Explorer, Bomberman '93, etc, due to the fact that the TurboGrafx-16 supported 5 players. The catch is that you can only use 4 Wii Remotes/Classic Controllers at a time, and the fifth controller must be a GameCube controller.

lol, it was more of a rhetorical question but I'm glad for the answers.
I was furthering my point of how stupid it is no games support 4 controller co-op play on a single console. Some people for whatever sick reason, think its better to NOT have that and/or its not needed because playing by yourself is the only needed option.
What makes no sense is why the "next" gen console games have LESS features than previous gen, for the xbox anyways.

Halo 3. But I agree, that's one thing that has irked me a bit this generation of consoles, Halo 3 let's a guest (not even someone with a Live profile) join in and play not only splitscreen but splitscreen ONLINE. Yet there's so little games out there that won't even give you splitscreen offline play, it's pretty terrible. I get that online play is the future and all, but people still like to get together in person and play games.
Aaaaanyway, Left 4 Dead. I'm a bit strapped for cash at the mo, with not having a job and such, so my pretty fucking amazing friend gifted me Left 4 Dead over Steam so that I can still partake in some co-op Zombie Apocalypse lovelyness. I can't wait till the demo/beta/thingy, I REALLY REALLY want to play this game, just got finished watching Dead Set (zombie apocalypse tv show) which really got me in the mood for the game.

Coop split-screen...with a feature I've longed for in tons of split screen games: you can reorient the split so that it splits it either vertical or horizontal. Most games split horizontal and it drives me insane.
Now the next question is, can you do split screen over Xbox Live when one user doesn't have a Live account (ala Halo 3.) Given the heavy emphasis on team I hope they try and make the coop constrictions as lose as possible.

FYI, the NXE (New Xbox Experience) will be hitting in roughly 6 days. Its been said that you will need some form of memory (HD or Mem Card) to run it <I believe it only needs 128k memory> . unless you dont conncect to XBL. Keep that in mind if you plan to go with the Arcade unit which comes with no storage device.

ok, so I'm not liking it as much as I liked the demo. It seems to dwell too much on playing styles I don't much care for.
(it's still good and playable, but I can only take so much of it at once...so if I die, I'm turning it off for the night.)
Steam is the way to go my man! I can't handle FPS games on consoles so I also think that PC is the way to go with this as well.
I had the opposite reaction. I felt the game was far superior to what we were shown on the demo. I played through Dead Air first thing last night and it was a BLAST. The "AI Director" aspect really makes the Coop bit work for me. The reason I only play online multiplayer FPS games is to avoid predictability. Haven't tried the Vs. mode yet ...
I almost didn't buy this as I figured I had seen it all in the demo, but purchased it since I have so many Steam Friends buying it.
Never really tried a Coop game before and I am surprised at how much I like it and zombies are the perfect mooks (fodder). I don't know what else to say - it's a damn fun time if you've got 3 other people you know to "jump in" with. I was up till 2AM playing it and I'm at work suffering through a day of meetings and I can't wait to get home to play s'more.
* I would hope that the TRS guys will review this, but I just know that they will chose to play it on the 360 (at least this is what I would ass_u_me) and I just know that it will not be the same game on the console as it is on the PC.

It's definitely more fun once I nosed around and realized that single player wasn't a single player campaign...more of a you and bots thing. The two things in modern gaming that turn me off on games tends to be the whole "defend yourself against waves of enemies" and "run this long ass way without some save point so you have to do it all again if you die". I can't see myself every playing Halo or episode 2 of Half-Life 2 again because of those. Somehow, it doesn't seem so bad in this game, I was just irritated after having died on the rooftop and having to start way back in the saferoom.
It definitely requires a different play-style that's out of my comfort zone, so I can't see myself spending hour upon hours like I can with most games...but it's fun to let off steam (and I just got a kick out of the chick's comment about how the zombies move so fast and it's some sort of crime that they do.)
Edit: Hell, I'd even consider multiplayer with this one...tired of these AI guys jumping in my bullet stream and then bitching about getting hit...or me being down to single digit red and they still need me to go first.)
Yeah, I don't think it fits well as a single-player game. In fact, when I tried playing the demo by myself I hated it.

Got it today and I'm generally having an awesome time. The fun varies depending on who you get teamed up with (if not playing with a friend). People who stick together ends up being more fun than people moving at their own pace and not giving a crap about the rest of the team.
Probably the best part of the game is Versus mode. Playing as a special infected is a crap load of fun.
If any TRSers wanna play, add me! GT: az0madman
Still gotta do the other three campaigns. Frankly, I'll be glad to get out of the city.

Just got done with about an hour of versus. It's so much better when the guys your with know what they're doing. We had a lot of group tactics for both survivor and Infected, we ended up destroying the other team 3000 to 200.
the TRS crew played this last night so i'll be awaiting their review.

It's a Valve game, there will be. They've said as much too, although no specifics but it's pretty open for them to add stuff, more movies seems the obvious one, adding the other two to versus might be the priority I'd think.

It's a Valve game so there will be a ton of DLC for the PC version and none for the 360.

But that's how it should be, no? People complain about games requiring installs because they picked a console to avoid it...shouldn't they miss out on the free add-ons too? ;>

Well Valve has pretty much said the 360 will get whatever the PC version does, they understand people are a bit pissed about the TF2 situation.
Unless they get some sort of sponsorship though I doubt it'll be free on console, just now the way Microsoft work.

Valve confirmed that the TF2 DLC would be coming to 360 eventually. It took forever but at least we're getting it.

Am enjoying the game but am having the damndest time getting the game into two player split screen. My girlfriend doesn't have an xbox live account but I have read on multiple sites that we can still play it with each other. Yet we've tried hitting start on the controller in every mode and I can't get her in.
Has anyone had success?

In the Main menu Screen at the Bottom left hand Corner, it will say Player 2 press start, then go to Play Campaign and pick split screen, and you should be able to play it like that im sure.

Excellent. Danke. We were trying to start it in the mission or from the different mission screens.

Played my first session of L4D last night co-op with TRS forumite Ramshaw and the man himself, Jeff Cannata. I think we all had a blast playing but damn was it hard trying to defend the rooftop until the helicopter came. We had four or five attempts before we cracked it. Jeff almost got to the chopper on the second time of asking, but was brutally denied just as he was leaping in.
Our fourth player was an AI and damn did we need him, at no point did I ever think it was computer controlled.
My only gripe with the game is that the movement feels a bit floaty, there's no real weight to your running or jumping. Other than that the game is excellent!
If anyone wants to play sometime, feel free to add me.

I agree that the movement is a bit floaty, but that type of movement is a sort of valve "trademark". I've noticed it TF2 and CS as well.
The thing I like most about this game is how it changes the campaign and chapters almost everytime you play it. The zombies are always in a different spot and tanks, boomers and hunters always come in at different times.
And the game completely changes when your playing with friends and or people that communicate while playing. Overall a fantastic game, definitely my favourite of the latest group to hit stores.

This game is probably one of the most fun games I've played in a long time, not including music games. You know it's good when you're in your room at 2 AM and you're yelling at your friends and laughing via headset.

I'm in conflict of whether to buy PC or 360. Some RL friends have PC and have more friends on my 360 friends list. So this may be one game I buy on both platforms. PC first then 360 discounted at some point.
My inner PC fanboy wants to steer you one way, but if you are ok with FPS'rs on the 360 then I would say that you should choose the platform on which you have the most "friends". It's a 3x as fun with friends - in general I've had good experiences with strangers (save 1 douche) on the PC.
I'm hooked on this game. Last night played Dead Harvest on Expert with some m8s and made it all the way to the end only to be sucker-vomited at the last moment swarmed/killed.
Up till 4AM AGAIN playing this with friends. The game is dead simple, but Valve's process of playtest + tweak, playtest + tweak just proves they know their freaking multiplayer over there.
* are there any PC L4D players here? Any TRS groups on Steam?
pr0 tip: Open the console (on the PC) and type "openserverbrowser" - this gives you a ... server browser - much better way of choosing a game to join in on.

Agreed...just from the demos on the two systems I found the PC version 10 times more fun, but if most of your friends that play it have it for 360, go that route.

I love L4D. The only thing is that I wish they made all 4 campaigns available in versus, and that they had more campaigns. The campaigns that are there have the MOST replay-ability of any game ever. No kidding. I can go for hours playing the 2 campaigns on versus.

The movie posters you see in game are actually being made by Valve. You can grab them from the Valve store here (http://store.valvesoftware.com/productshowcase/productshowcase_L4D-MoviePosterPack.html)

I have 2 questions. . .
#1 Is this game really worth buying? From what I've been reading it seems like the actual game is really short. Seems like a renter to me. . .
#2 Does Left 4 Dead have 4-player splitscreen?
Thanks!

It's short in the same way something like the multi-player part of Unreal Tournament 3 is short.

The game is great. Had a LAN party recently, where we played the same two maps for 5+ hours. I like to measure the worth of a game by time spent per hour, and this is definitely gonna hit below the 1$/hour range.
