There used to be some great mini-series on network tv. Roots, Shogun, Thornbirds, Lace ;). I think the last one I remember was It (Stephen King).

What killed the miniseries?

cost. as mini series and made for tv movies became more popular people began to expect better production quality. it got to a point a couple of years ago that people were expecting the same quality as a multimillion dollar film and when it wasn't people quit watching

Last time I looked, there weren't any Network produces made-for-TV movies either. It is probably an shortened attention span as well as cost.

Besides, a lot of regular TV series become miniseries without meaning to.

Cable seems like a much better venue for mini-series anyway.
