I'm out of the loop on this one since I don't bother with it but I am getting a pop up now when connected to the net and I haven't even opened any browser telling me to run something to clean my registry at msreg.com but I don't think this is legit so I'm running spybot now. I have Avira Antivir but I have to go premium to get updates. Blah. Any help please. D'oh, thing popped up again while typing telling me to get something at clean32.com

1. Stop using IE - switch to Opera or Firefox, or at least run IE 7.0 with the popup blocker enabled.
2. Run Spybot and AdAware.
3. Grab a copy of AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/). I run McAfee on my laptop (Corporate Version - mandated), but run AVG on my desktop machine. The free version is a great (memory resident) antivirus app, and has free virus file updates.

Also, since you are now on a broadband connection, yo shuld consider a firewall. To be honest, the built in firewall in windows XP is fine, but I would also consider tightening up the configuration on your router. You are using a router and not just plugging the modem straight into your computer right?

i agree with token 100% the only thing i would add is instead of using the built in firewall youi give Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) a try.

A router? I..don't think so...the Cable modem is not that right, it's just cable modem gets connection and I plug from the modem to the laptop. Just ran Avast, got 2 things in the "chest" as they call it, Spybot got a bunch of things. Adaware running now, it got a few things and is still running. Going for AVG as well. I remember AVG but for some reason I remember uninstalling it for something. Ah well. I don't want to go for ZoneAlarm, too bulky, but if I have to...

^ What he said.

As for a firewall, I would suggest using ZoneAlarm. But the router is the best way to go.

Well, the intention is to go Wireless in the house but for now I'm tethered. I know nothing about all this so have to learn about it. Would the wireless solution work? It's a wireless router I need, right?

If you're not completely tied to having to use Windows, perhaps it might be a good time to make the swtich. Windows is by no means the only game in town. Mac OS X, NetBSD, and Linux are all excellent alternatives.

I have had SO MUCH TROUBLE with Linux and I want to use it so bad. Now I can download an .iso file easily since I am on cable. I need an .iso that will run as a live CD and allow me to install later down the road, I need to figure it out on the Ubuntu site.

Even if you get one of those cheap wired routers. It is better than no router at all.
