So, on blackfox, and other threads, we been posting some live concert youtube clips of our favorite bands...
But what have you seen live that really kicked ass...?
My top three ever, (and I'm an old fart, but post hippy, and seen a ton of great and not so great shows...)
My top three in desending order, though hard to choose:
3: U2 (Joshua Tree tour)
2: Led Zeppelin (Song Remains the Same tour)
1: NIN (Downward Spiral tour)
Extra credit: The Vapors, (Magnets Tour) in a bar in St. Louis. Stepfather had to get me special underage permission to see the show. They introduced their hit "turning japanese" as the latest single from REO speedwagon, which was cute cause REO was from the area... maybe I should start a "most underrated band" thread, because, beyond the "turning japanese" silly little one hit wonder song, their other stuff was pop/new-wave gold. And they had the third best bassist in the world, after John "The Ox" Entwistle and Pete Farndon, the guy with The Pretenders.)

Having grown up a least 100 miles from any popular venue, I've never been to any mainstream bands. Mostly local stuff. I can't remember much. My wedding band was kinda cool. I've been to two concerts of the vain suggested. Both were the same performer and the same year. That was Sting in 1988. I was really into Stiing just then.

Damn, by the time I was your age I had seen about twenty. Granted I lived in huge city that every band hit, and my stepfather was (and still is a concert whore) but you don't live in a gulag. Someone you like must hit DC that's worth the drive...

Who?
Oh, The Who would be number 4, by the way, back when all of them were still alive. (Who Are You? tour, right before Keith kicked. Damn saw them again without him later. Not the same. Not the same at all...) :(

I've seen the concert video "Quadraphenia" is it? I would love to have seen The Who in their prime. All metal hair bands owe a debt to The Who.

No, the hair bands were zeppelin influenced, the "concept prog/mod bands" where Who influenced, for the most part. but lots of crossover...

:)No - its three plumbers. Kinda crossover operatic.
My top three? Hadn't been to a concert per se in years - until I saw Billy Joel again a month or two ago.
Best three?
Phil Collins
Dire Straights
Huey Lewis & The News
All back in the late 80's/90's.
Also saw AC/DC, and Midnight Oil in the same time period.
Honorable mentions go to:
Billy Joel (x2)
ENZSO (Split Enz with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra - AWESOME, and the 2 CDs are on heavy rotation on my iPod).
Jesus Christ - Superstar (Concert, not theatrical version)

Best three ever? Hm...
1. Issac Green & the Skalars - Local ska band from STL. Sometime 5-10 years back, during the summer, they played a public show in a park. Nothing funner than seeing kids and old people join the dance floor.
2. Keane - Totally blew me away. Boggles me even more when I remember that it's only three people in the band. They fill the room and act as if they are an army of 20.
3. Yo La Tengo - First concert ever. Not necessarily the best, but being the first makes it pretty memorable.

1. Alice Cooper http://youtube.com/watch?v=D-MM__7Im6k
Unfortunately too young to have seen him earlier. I saw him last August on the Dirty Diamonds tour and was thoroughly amazed, despite knowing what sort of things to expect. From Alice being operated on by cycloptic monsters at the end of Welcome To My Nightmare, to him getting beheaded and then resurrected, skewering a children's doll through the chest during Dead Babies, to Alice hurling strand after strand of diamonds to the crowd during Dirty Diamonds... Nothing will probably ever compare to that experience.
2. Blackfield http://youtube.com/watch?v=UudSJa49f_k
Blackfield is a band with Israeli musician Aviv Geffin and Porcupine Tree front man Steven Wilson. Saw them at The Knitting Factory in LA just a few months ago. They played both albums in their entirety as well as a great cover of Alanis Morrisette's song "Thank U." The band was top notch and everything sounded incredible live. Despite something like an hour and a half wait outside (The band had to switch stages due to a tech problem) I had an amazing time.
3. Ours http://youtube.com/watch?v=DHD4fkxd3wM
Ever since I saw their video for the song "Sometiems" back in like 2001 I have been a rabid fan. I've seen them play three times. Once was for free at a cafe place on the USC campus. Another time was at a small little place I can't even remember, and the most recent one was at the Knitting Factory in LA. Utterly amazing and incredible live. The free show lasted nearly three hours. Unfortunately record label trouble has rpevented their third album from coming out so I have some more waiting to do ;-;
And I will be taking a 5-6 hour bus ride up to San Francisco in July to stay with a friend of mine for a few days. We are going to two Smashing Pumpkins dates,July 28th and August 1st. Cannot. ****ing. Wait.

For living so close to amazing venues, I've seen so few bands live. But I love local acts, I love them so.
So this might not mean a lot to you, but it does to me :D haha
1. Cinco de Mayo SKAAAAfest - A lot of great ska bands from our area and a few from out of town. All of which were amazing. Though maybe I'm biased, as 5 close friends of mine are in one band... and several others were dispersed through the other bands. :D It was an amaaaazing night though.
2. Punk v Ska Show - Same venue, mostly the same ska bands plus a few good punks. I love the local music scene here.
3. Streetlight Manifesto/Aquabats - Awesome. Just awesome. I'm still upset that they're not playing here again this year, and also that I missed the Reel Big Fish year. But amazing none the less.
Yeah, I'm a ska kid... kinda. Ska shows are the best to go to though, you must understand. Happiest kids on earth.

Tower of Power, Wolfmother, and The Mars Volta. I want to put the Blue Scholars in there too, but that was too intimate to be considered a "concert," I'd say.

I haven't seen too many concerts live. But here are my tops.
1. Say Anything w/ Saves the Day
2. O.A.R. w/ Jack's Mannequin
3. Franz Ferdinand
Another one was OK Go and French Kicks. It was upstairs in this ballroom in Chicago - pretty cool.

Indeed. They involve getting eaten by a giant worm on stage.

Yes was excelent all four times I saw them.
In the 80s I was thinking it would have been cool to have seen them in the 70s. And when I saw them again they had reverted back to more of their 70s sound.
Ozzy was awsome 3 of 4 times. One time the drummer was off. Any band can have an off night.
Uriah Heep was a top show. You Call That Art? won over a Quiet Riot croud. To bad You Call That Art? did not make it big. They were very good live.

Speaking of which I wish I coulda seen Iggy Pop and David Bowie back in their heydays..
Another great show was the Black and Blue tour. Not the stones tour of their black and blue album but black sabbath and Blue oyster cult. Cult openend and they were awesome. Very underated band. Fell asleep during Sabbath. Really. I did. ha. Pot, most probably, but was never a big fan.
