Hey Guys. It's great to see systm back. I have been contemplating on getting a mac book pro for my next laptop and it would be great to see an episode on Systm on the benefits to switching to the mac. This might be a better suggestion for an episode for indigital but I would love to see an in depth look at the advantages and disadvantages of switching over to the mac. I am a long time pc user but getting fed up with all the windows vista problems. This is my reasoning for switching and I also want to make myself more marketable in the tech support field by knowing how to fix both operating systems. I will still have a pc for gaming but would love to make the transition over to the mac.

umm, all depends on what your going to be using it for...
as far as making yourself marketable in tech support, a PC. Having the same "type" of computer as your customers is a big plus. And I'm going to guess a lot of your customers are using PCs. Yea, you could dual boot a Mac with OSX and Windows. But the OS isn't the issue, the issue is when you walk into a customers place that only has a PC with a Mac and they begin to question if you really know what you are doing. Although the same will go for if you walk into a Mac customers place with a PC laptop.

Im just interested in learning OSX. I would love to be able to work both operating systems and fix them. The long term goal would be to do my work on a mac and just use my windows pc for gaming. I am a first person shooter fan. I play the others too.

Go with a macbook pro and you can run Windows under Virtual Box (http://www.virtualbox.org/) or dual boot w/ Bootcamp (http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/). You get the best of both worlds.

And even run Linux off of it as well!
I'll tell you though, don't expect to get good gaming from a Macbook Pro. I ran the 'Lost Planet' demo and got 15 frames a second at best while at 800x600 with medium everything.
CS: S runs like a champ, but that game isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Linux is certainly an option, but as for me personally, I'll go with NetBSD.

Heh, I have an HP DV9280 laptop. Current Quad boot from Vista, XP, OSX 10.4.8, Ubuntu...
17" wide screen
Core 2 Duo
300 Gig (SATA)
Camera
2 Gig Ram
Nvidia 7800/256 meg video card (non shared)
Memory card reader
Firewire
6 USB ports
Full keyboard
etc etc
Cost, 1199 new
What would that cost in Mac terms?

If it's an X86 mac, why bother with NetBSD? It's not a server, and you don't need to worry about FreeBSD not having a PPC port. FreeBSD I find ok as a workstation platform, NetBSD is more of a server one. And it's also never updated.
And I wouldn't waste money on an Intel Macbook Pro. You can get a core 2 duo in any old laptop with the same amount of ram, and get this, an Nvidia graphics chipset, not a crappy ATI one. PC Laptops are half the price, just throw XP and OS X on it (go torrenting for about five minutes, you'll find the OS X install disc containing the hacked kernel fairly quickly).

Heya there mate, im a Microsoft butt boy through and through, been using windows since they gave us command prompt, im MCSE qualified, Microsoft Partner and Small Business Specialist.... Guess what, im gonna suggest you go streight to the apple website and buy a mac !
Yes you heard me right, i mean common, there isnt a choice anymore, the macs of recent years have really pulled their fingers out and made some truily gorgeous kit, im using a Macbook Pro atm, and absolutly love it, the design is amazing, its light, strong amazing on battery as well as several other things i aint gonna keep rambleing on about....
But heres the kicker, id never of bought a mac before, but now their running intel, their perfect, cus of two things... 1, Ya can now run windows, linux, Mac OS X and any other obscure OS on them very very easily.... 2, cus of this new wonderful processor architecture, software is miles easier to make for them, hence your seeing a lot more companies who before took the stance "eh, mac... thats that wierd OS none of our coders understand isnt it" turning around and saying "shit, more money for us yipppppie".
So my friend, u got a gorgeous piece of kit, very powerful, very portable, very flexible in its use and within several clicks of your mouse....
And ill add one more thing, iv tried windows Vista on several of my actual windows designed machines and it runs three legged dog, all over the place, iv got vista business edition running on this and its the smoothest install and operation of them all by far (for example it actually lets me log in)
I know you'll make the right decision, oh and by the way, although im happy to endorse windows and Mac OS X, i officially hate Linux, why cant u people make anything easy, like pulling teeth just getting the dam thing to install !
