i used to have Comcast's 15mbps down/2mbps up service, but uptime was HORRIBLE so i went down to Verizon's 3mbps down/768kbps up service...quite a bit slower, but the uptime kicks some ass

I've added a poll to this topic, out of curiosity of everyone's connection. :)
I'm using AT&T Yahoo High Speed's 'Elite' package (6Mbits/768Kbits)

I left Comcast due to poor service/uptime, horrid billing, and inept customer service and tech support
I'm now using AT&T Yahoo DSL, 3mb/768mb

Wastern, your experience is the exact opposite of mine. SBC/AT&T were billing me and my roommate for service we weren't getting, both phone and internet. They calimed we were hooked up, that the post was 49, so our apartment manager hired an electrician who verified that we were NOT connected. After four months of nothing, not able to use the phone, no internet at home, our manager arguing with SBC on our behalf, we finally went with Comcast. They've been great so far. And better pricing.

Fiber by Cox. Only neighborhood in San Diego that's completely gone fiber so far. Dunno why, but I'm not complaining. ;)

I have Charter Cable and I am stuck at 3 Mbps/256k, hopefully they will release the 5 and 10 Mbps soon, becuase my upload speed really sucks when playing on Xbox Live. ATT has DSL but I am saving more if I just keep charters 3 Mbps service becuase it knocks some money off my cable bill.

Cable through Comcast, I have an outtage about every other month. :(
I was down every other day. and once 3 days in a row.
When I called the repairman was 3 hours late. I asked them to reschedule and they kept pressing that they were 5 minutes away for 2 1/2 hours. I told them all I wanted was honestly and I had not problem moving it to another day and that I'd prefer it....they weren't having it.
He fixed nothing, I ended up sleeping too late, going into work 2 hours late and having to work a 12 hour midnight shift on only 4 hours of broken sleep
THEN, next time I called with an outage they tried to send out another guy and I wasn't having it, I gave them the rant posted above.
oh, they also had the nerve to try and charge me for that service call.....on 3 separate bills. Those were fun phone calls. I began to look forward to yelling at those fools

Sup,
I use the best type of connection, a free one. Not illegal, just free. I volunteer as a sysadmin for a non-profit and they let me use the connection from free. It is a butchered mix of ADSL and Wi-Fi (yeah I know, Wi-Fi).

Fibre from Cox? I didn't know they were offering that anywhere. I am rockin' the good ol' cox cable. There is a town just north of me that has gone city-wide with wi-fi.

I got the fastest that sbcglobal yahoo offers, 6/768 I believe. I see no difference between the 2.5/768 I had before. A speed test verifies me at 5.5 and above, I may downgrade.
As for Comcast, being a former construction worker, I can tell you that they NEVER mark their buried cables. It is cheaper for them to fix them than pay people full time to go around and mark them. I would not have cable in a million years, any company that could care less about providing a reliable service to their customers can shove it.

DSL 800k/650k ~$50. A little expensive for the speeds, but it's local and the service rarely goes down.

Anyone want to explain what all of these are? Like differences etc...I just know I have cable.
thequestion
10-28-2006, 09:23 PM
Differences:
Dial-up - Connection over the older copper phone system. Compared to dsl or cable it's slooow.
DSL - a dedicated high-speed line. Usually slower than cable, but more reliable.
Cable - internet over the tv system, note that other people within your area can affect your speeds. (Unlike dsl).
Satellite - internet over satellite, three ways to connect:
* one-way multicast,
* one-way with terrestrial return, and
* two-way satellite access.
Fiber - internet over fiber optics. Note that fiber can offer very good speeds depending what you pay.

DSL. It's pretty fast, though.
Just got cable back in May. Upgraded from dialup. We get 1.5 up but I think we need to upgrade to at least 3. :p

I feel your pain Famicoman. I'm running on the same stuff only going about 720 kbps, which is not too bad. 5x better than the piece of shit AOL which went about 15 kbps of dial-up, 20 if lucky.

I'm in Sydney Australia, I've heard America doesn't have download caps, almost all ISP's in Australia do.
I pay $90AUD (~$70USD) a month for "24mbit" TPG ADSL2+ 50gb, which actually connects at 12mbit down 1mbit up due to me being 1.8km from the phone exchange.
The cool thing about the plan is when you go over the 50gb you're capped to 256/1024 not 64kbit like most ISP's down here. I managed to download 35gb while capped last month :P
