Sorry, just had to mention this. I weighed myself Friday morning and every morning since. Today I'm down by 5.8 pounds. What a difference lotsa limiting and running makes!

But I want to know - does anyone know of some good back exercises and ones for the arms/chest aside from push-up and pull-ups?

Thosee resistance bands are a good arm workout. The figure-eight shaped one is a very versatile band for the arms.

Free-weights are also a good choice. Do an overhead lift with a weight. Hold a single weight with both hands vertical over your head with your elbows at about ear level. Raise and lower just bending at the elbow.

Another good one that uses no equipment is called the plank. Lie flat on the floor. Raise your whole body off the floor on just your forearms and toes. Hold the position as long as you can do it and keep your body straight so you don't strain your back. This is great for the abs.

Simple Mathematics...

Cut 500 calories a day. This totals 3,500 calories a week. Three thousand five hundred is the number of calories in a pound of fat. So, 500 calories a day is a pound a week... forever...

Not so simple... actually doing it... Great job.

I can't cut 500. In a typical day I'm at about 400-500 as it is. if I go over, it doesn't stay down.

There are lots of places online where you can find beginners running plans. You should be careful not to injure yourself.

Most of plans are pretty painless if you stick with them and will have you running 5K in about 10 weeks.

I used one about seven years back to get in shape. Sadly, I don't have the time for it now and my body suffers.

Also, if you plan on running, you better eat some proper food. You'll need enough protein to repair damage and to build up muscles. Losing weight is great but you should focus on being fit first.

Tone up and build muscle and your body will naturally burn more calories when you are not exercising.

Also, eating good food is important following a workout, whatever you choose to do for your workouts.

Women tone and build muscle differently than guys do because we are looking for different results. Most women aren't looking to bulk up. :)

for arms she should just get those rubber weights, like 5-10 lbs each and just rep it up

girls should just use the elliptical machine, this way they dont hurt their knees. prob get faster results on that machine with legs + buttocks

thats right, i said buttocks

+1 for freeweights. Do you have a friend with a gym membership, maybe go on a day pass and get some tips for what exercises to do. Skull crushers and chest flys/reverse flys are great.

I want to run a mile (not run/walk/run/walk) withing two weeks. Running 5k would KICK ASS.

Haha! Injure myself.... I stretch, though and pretty damned sore right now. Tonight I was at the track an hour and a half. I ran until I couldn't anymore, walked a minute or two, ran more until I couldn't, walk a minute, ran, etc., until I could hardly walk, then did leg lifts until I could use my legs again. Repeat the run/walk/run, then sit-ups. After an hour and a half, my heart was racing too much, so I decided to call it quits for the night.

Tomorrow night I'll be back!

btw, what sites are reputable? I want to do 5k. 5m would be cooler. But 5k is a good start.

That looked okay. I was sorta looking for a plan that laid out your goals day-by-day and not week-by-week. It's important to vary your workout in order to avoid injury. It's a pretty fine line, you do want to push yourself a little. You body's natural ability to repair damage is actually what strengthens you, not the actual workout. Therefore, it is important to push yourself to the edge, but not over. It is also important to get a good amount of rest. This includes proper sleep and taking a period day of rest. This is why day-by-day plan is better.

I, too wish I had a 24 hour gym, it would make it easier to work out.

Skull crushers: Lay on your back (preferrably on a bench) and hold a weight with both hands just about chest level. Keeping your arms close to your head, move the weight back and over your head. This will work your triceps.

Regular bicep curls can do wonders for your biceps as well.

For me, the key to using free weights successfully is to concentrate on the muscle group you are trying to work. If you're making your grocery list or thinking about life, you're not going to see results.

Would a medicine ball work? I want one of those. It's fun to have them dropped on my stomach. You mentioned something else too, I can't remember what.

Hmm.. I imagine it would, but I've never used it. I also mentioned chest flys - standing you put the free weights in front of you about stomach height and pull back contracting the muscles in your back (elbows are bent).

Sounds like the style of medicine ball with handles molded into it would work best for that type of exercise so you can keep a solid grip on the ball.

This type:

You could also try Yoga. Keeps your muscles limber and stress levels down. It's also good for strengthening your back and it doesn't have as much impact on the joints.

Weightloss probably isn't too fast with Yoga, so you can rotate it with Cardio (running) & Free weights.

Klitzy, fuck you. I've come down almost 200 pounds so far and only got so huge because of a high dose of prednisone for years that also screwed up my metabolism. Losing weight isn't overrated. Not only is there health, but you know whatguys say about girls. If one has even five extra pounds on her, guys, even geeks, slam her for being "fat." So this reply of yours is really cruel.

I don't think he intended for it to be a jab at you. I think he was just saying loosing weight isn't a problem for him. I'm the same way, I can eat eat and eat and not gain a pound. I've always been the "skinny kid" which is much like being the "fat kid" if you really think about it.

If your BF now slams you for being "fat" then I would suggest you look for a new BF. You should be loved for the weight of your heart, not the number on the scale.

I can't speak for every guy in the world...but I can tell you I for one wouldn't call a girl that weighs more then me "fat". Unfortunately, in terms of a girls weight - what many call "fat" is actually healthy.

If you want to be a stick, try anorexia. I'm not sure that running is a doorway to sticktatude unless you start running marathons or something. Three miles a day five times a week is good enough to put you in great cardiovascular condition. You'll look and feel healthier and you may even be slimmer. However, skin and bones you won't be.

Focus on being healthy, let your body find the proper balance.
