I've been a Mac user since the first family computer which was one of the early Macs that had no built in hard drive.
I haven't really run into this negativity. I get more positive questions from people who want to start using Macs but want to know more about the differences.

You can still dual boot Windows on that new PowerBook you'll buy next semester. :D
At work I use windows and at home Macs. I grew up back in the day when there was an Apple II in every classroom, so I drank the kool-aid early and am glad I did. :)

I'm actually in a unique position, because I just quit my PC technician job and took a job at an Apple Store working at the Genius Bar (it feels weird calling myself a "Genius"), so I just thought I'd toss in my two cents.
People who use Macs are often labeled as fanboys simply because they've taken the road less traveled. Apple only has about a 5-6% market share. When people see that Apple logo on your MacBook, they see somebody who is dissenting from that 95% Windows-based market share, and they wonder why somebody would make that decision. It's difficult to be honest to these people because simply telling them that it works better and that it's more secure is all that's needed to get slapped with that fanboy label.
Something else to consider is that before I started my job here, I did freelance repair on all Apple products, and all of those OS X users all love their products, be it an iPod an iBook or a Power Mac. I never met anybody who felt that way about their Dell or HP.

Rant....
Fanboys aren't born, they are created.
Honestly Phatty, you should just suck it up. If they ask you why you use a Mac, just say, "It's the only computer I own." Why do you allow yourself to be drawn into a pointless debate?

Anyone who prefers something that is in the minority will feel this. And you're right on it. Basically if you are in the minority and stand your ground, you must be a fanboy/girl. Just fun with it and have fun. Windows sucks and I wish I didn't have to use it for work.

My freshman comp. professor asked me if I was doing something with graphic design one day. When I told her I wasn't, she had a hard time understanding why I had a mac. I usually try to keep it simple with a "I just like it".
She probably just thought you were cute and was trying to chat you up. I'll often have such conversations with students. That is, I would if I wasn't married.
I have a hard time understanding such questions. For me, people should use what they like.
For example, I use a Nikon while my best buddy uses a Canon. Both Camera's have strengths and both have weaknesses. Neither one of us feel the need to argue about the choice.
Some items are just tools, but sometimes a personal item becomes more. Sometimes an item becomes a part of out personal expression. Like automobiles, I think the right computer can do that.
Ford and Chevy owners often bicker about the virtues of each make. But hey, I drive a VW.

I rarely get heckled for being a Mac user. The only time I do is when I go over to a LAN party and there are 10 guys with PC towers that look like they came from the depths of hell itself, and I have my little tower. They always ask me stuff like "Why don't you have a better case?" or tell me I should get neon tubes. Then I tell them where my money went (Macbook Pro) and they just kind of scoff.

A bunch of my friends have Macs, so I rarely get criticized for owning one, really only on teh internets.

The only people that really bother me about using a mac are people that have never really used them for more then 10 mins and are computer illiterate, so I just laugh at them.

Anyone think the next MBP will be out by Aug? Im guessing so since they have the thing on june 11th or whatever...I just hate stepping into a new playground and having the swing be old already.
that was lame but maybe you understand lol

Waiting and Apple don't really mix, because there will always be rumours of an upgrade, and you'll keep waiting and waiting.

I understand completely, as I just bought my MBP in March and already a new set is looming in the clouds. The rate that Intel chipsets are coming out and Apple is integrating them is a little alarming. By the time they finished getting Core Duo into everything, they started converting everything to core 2 duo. I guess it's just all up to how much longer you want to/have to wait.
I jumped the gun and got mine since I didn't feel like waiting a few more months. Some days I beat myself up about it, other days it's like "Meh, what else can you do?"

Im glad I didn't wait, because I would've been waiting to get my MacBook till a week or so ago.
I got mine in November and hate to use windows, it just feels dirty to me for some reason.

Well if it's for school I'd say definitely go for it.
But wait as long as you possibly can.

i dont associate with anyone else with a computer no less them know what the difference is, besides at work but i dont talk to anyone. i see alot of it on the net but i dont know why people even argue. everyone just likes to complain all the time.
