Why are they so anti Hummer? It's none of my business if somebody wants to blow a ton of money filling the tank up on their hummer. If they have the cash for a hummer, they probably have enough to fill it up as well.

As far as hybrids, I hear they have a really bad re-sale value. I heard this is because the battery burns down and has to end up being replaced or something. Just as many hybrid drivers are jerks as much as hummer drivers.

Excuse the poor quality post...at the beach and had a few... :D

I don't think it was the cost of the gas they were upset about, but rather just how much gas Hummers use.

Many years ago (around 11 years or so) I used to work at a Radio Shack. A lot of cops used to come in there for various things and they would always hang out and talk to us.

One time this cop that came in was part of the K9 unit team. We were outside talking and he showed me this key chain thing he had where he could press a button, and the back door opened up allowing his dog to come out and rescue him.

He told me they were trained to always use the key chain on the bottom of their chin so the signal would travel the farthest distance.

Anyway, I had forgotten about that until they showed it again. Maybe this is where this trick originated from.

*edit*
Anyone else get up in the middle of the show to check if it was their cell that was on low battery? :)

Yes I was exaggerating... (hope I was, who knows...)

But my point was that, A and K's hate towards Humvee's wasn't about the prize the owner has to pay for the gas, it was about the fact that they hurt the environment because of their poor mileage... And I share their hate for that reason.

Just as many hybrid drivers are jerks as much as hummer drivers.

That's an excellent point that people tend to forget. They can have a pompous attitude about the car they own. "I own a Prius, I'm doing something about the environment, what are youuu doing? *as they sip on the StarBucks Coffee" and a 50mpg plate would look just as ass haha

Where as Hummer drivers just think it looks cool, it's not like they were actively seeking to destroy the environment [well except the 7mpg plate guy lol]

My problem with the Hummer is almost what Kevin was saying, it's an off road vehicle marketed to the wrong people.. And it's phony, it's not a military vehicle, just a Chevy Tahoe dressed to look like one.

Instead of hating on it and doing nothing why not write a letter to your congress person expression your interest in the government doing more research/development with hydrogen fuel cells?

Or better yet, write to Chevy and express your interest in a more environmental friendly Hummer.

Like said on the show, the problem is that the Hummers are marketed towards "normal" people who doesn't need it... Let the military and similar use it...

Luckily we don't have many of them in Denmark - we do however have other SUV's, and they just got more expensive due to changes in the taxes.

especially the newer ones but cant afford it. besides goverment mileage standards have been proven to be way off in the real world, we're all driving a hummer right now, sorry to inform you but everybody should really deduct at least 10 mpg off their cars.

i'm surprised alex came back, thought that fight was real the last time. there seems to be a shift in kevins attitude, more combative.

I get that, but even if the Hummer stopped going into production the environment would be in just as much damage as it is now. Gas guzziling vehicles are a problem...but boycotting hummers isn't the solution. The solution is vehicles that don't run on gas at all. Until that happens, I could care less about hummers. Your either stupid or rich if you buy a hummer now anyways. ;) LOL

lol, the whole epic thing. "didn't they make duke nuke'm? yeah, don't they have another game or something...... ehhh.... UT? oh yeah, that game." - i guess neither of them are pc gamers any more. kind of a shame...

my '97 ford aerostar gets about 4.5 mpg with none of the luxury of a hummer, so no one has to feel bad about their mpg

but come on kevin. hummer has done so little in the big picture, it is way off to say that HUMMER is ruining the environment. Don't stress yourself about hummers and the environment. There's a heck of a lot of other stuff that does much more pollution. Right on Alex, with the lightning rod/scapegoat thing. Bringing coherence to when Kevin goes on his environmental-San Franciscan rants. I care for the environment but we don't need to start calling all hummer drivers dicks, and that they deserving a keying. I DO know some decent hummer drivers.

I don't think that it's really all that fair for Alex to quote mileage of various cars and completely mis-quote them. Have a look here:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm
and compare various cars' mileage Hummer is easily one of the worst out there. Alex says that his car sips gas, but I can't find a single Acura that has good mileage. VW GTI (Kevin's car) is ok, but not great. On regular cars it looks like the Civic is likely one of the best choices. The only thing that he seemed to be remotely correct about is Accord's and Accord Hybrids... They have the same mileage.
In the interim, I hate Hummer drivers as they thumb their collective noses. Whether they are single handedly killing the environment or not, they are certainly part of the problem. If I see someone keying a Hummer I'm sure as hell not going to tell on them.

.

Alex was right, but what he didn't mention or know was that the Accord Hybrid is a V6 car that gets better mileage and performance than the Accord V6, while using the same amount of gas as the Accord 4 cylinder. It's confusing because most people assume that a hybrid car is designed for all-out fuel economy. In this case Honda was trying to show a hybrid motor could be used to enhance performance as well, akin to using something like a turbocharger... So yes it gets about the same mileage as the "regular" (meaning 4 cylinder accord)... But with 253 horsepower instead of 166... (obviously, whether it should be considered in the same category as "economy" hybrids is a different issue)

That keyless remote trick is so old shown in the video. I've been using it for 10 years since those key fobs came out. I'm surprised that not many people know this. It's great when the battery is getting low and you can't replace it right away.

What's wrong with Hummers? The H3 seems nice and big enough. No one ever says anything bad about trucks like Escalades, or other large pick ups that many drive and don't need to tow anything. I think anyone should buy whatever they like without having your vehicle attacked. Like Alex said, get a life.

chevmalfet

Alex was right about most of the Hybrids... partially because they attack the high end of the market to lower the sticker shock, but also largely because Toyota has important patents which make their hybrids and hybrids based on their tech more efficient (Honda recently discontinued one of their hybrids because it wasn't competitive).

His IE support was unfortunately a little less enlightened; yes the UI is much better but if anything IE's standards support is a step backwards from IE 6. Yet another reason to support FF, Opera, etc.

Can't speak for the PC side but the new Safari 3 Beta for Mac is damn quick.

the H3 is the small one, btw... It's like they said in the episode towards the end of the discussion. The Hummer has become a symbol for the "green earth" or whatever group to attach onto. It'd probably be very very different if all the groups were targeting different cars, companies, etc. Much easier for them all to attack one and try and make an example of it.

I agree with Alex about the keying their cars. Yea, the few hummer drives I have seen have been real jerks. But it also makes me wonder if they are like that because someone keyed their car, or was rude to them first solely because they own a hummer? Plus, it's just not cool. You can hate on hummers all you want, but don't mess with them try some way to convince the person driving it he doesn't need to, like the cost of gas.

And I agree with Kevin in that it is stupid for someone to have a Hummer or any 4 wheel drive big vehicle when all they do is drive around a city. In my college town we have a bunch of people driving big 1+ ton trunks. Being a agriculture university this makes sense for some. But then there are little sorority girls driving them that in no way could live on a farm or anywhere they'd actually use them. and that kind of pisses me off, esp when we have to have parking tags to park even not too far away from classes and some of these truck owns can't park worth shit. Seriously, one time I saw a truck parked (no one was inside) across 3 spaces... like perpendicular to the painted lines. I was also glad when I saw campus police write a ticket later that day.

…Yea, the few hummer drives I have seen have been real jerks. But it also makes me wonder if they are like that because someone keyed their car, or was rude to them first solely because they own a hummer?…

I figure it's the same as the BMW issue. Some car/truck owners buy the vehicles to sooth their insecurities; it makes them feel like the world that's been keeping them down is cowed by their status symbol, and that they can retaliate from their position of power.

You can tell a lot about people's core personalities from the way they drive.

And Kevin, I hope your VW isn't and auto. VAG (that's Audi, VW, Skoda, etc.) has always built very sketchy slushboxes. I suspect the DSG available in the A3 doesn't share the same mechanical issues as it's technically very close to their manual transmissions. (I've owned an Audi 4000, Scirocco, and a Corrado SLC, all stick, all with the niggling VW issues but solid engine and tranny—everyone I know that has had an auto VW has had the transmission grenade at least once).

Miles Per Gallon = Engine's Miles Per Gallon

****** Does not include the millage of the battery ********

Law past within the last 2 years that required the Miles Per Gallon of the actual Gas Engine and not the Engine + Motor because of the deception caused by battery capacities adding miles per Gallon.

And the FUNKin Hummers, I love the original but the shitty @$$ H2 and the other trendy pathetic unstable (anything but a true Hummer) excuse of a sport utility vehicle (what happened to the independant suspension that made the Hummer worth it and its wide wheel base; H2 doesn't have)

Regarding the whole hummer thing...

1. Everyone throws around the term "Hummer" like it's a single vehicle. The GM/AMC joint venture (mostly GM) has produced three distinct vehicles, the original H1 which is now out of production, the H2 based on the 820 platform, and the H3 based on the 345 platform. It seems most people assume a "Hummer" is an H2, which is incorrect.

2. The H2 and H3 having shared architectures with other vehicles doesn't mean they are redressed Tahoes and Colorados. A shared architecture means they have some common components and can be built on similarly configured assembly lines. The Saab 9-3, Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 all share common architectures and, other than being FWD sedans, have significantly different styling and performance characteristics.

3. The H2 and H3 are quite capable off-road. They aren't as adept as the discontinued H1, which was one of the best off road vehicles produced, but they are in line with other off-road vehicles in their market segment (Rovers, Land Cruisers, Mercedes G series)

4. I agree, people who buy Hummers, or ANY large offroad vehicle to drive around town all day are pretty stupid. As are people who drive sports cars, or huge trucks, or vans to work, if they don't need them for their work. These people pay for their stupidity by paying through the nose for gas. This problem is self-correcting. If you can afford a nice, shiny and expensive vehicle, you can afford a more sensible vehicle to just tool around town in.

I believe the original slight, and the assumption made by many, is that since the H2/H3 share a chassis and presumably suspension mount points with GM's other "vertically oriented station wagons" the H2 and H3 would be somewhat crippled from the get-go.

I've heard that the H3 at least is quite competent, but given the dimensions I wouldn't expect it to be an ideal starting point for a well set up off-road vehicle.

How do you get the new one via iTunes? I got it this morning on my new iPod
and it fails to play. Is there a way to force iTunes to re-dl the file?

Thanks,
badfeet

[edit: it was the small quicktime one that fails to play for me]

I think Alex was mixing up mileage and emissions regarding his Acura. The Acura's don't get the best gas mileage, but they do have some of the best emissions numbers in their class.
