View Full Version : Music You Listen To While Reading Comics

Just wondering what everyone out there listens to when they read their books. Or if anyone does at all. I like to listen to music in the background but have found it tough to get a solid playlist for reading. So this will also serve as the basis for some new comic reading themed playlists.

I think that this is the thread that you mean

Where Do You Read Your Comics? (http://www.revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5447&highlight=read+comics)

That other thread is more about where you read and not what you listen to.

I too have the tv on for background noise but I don't know if I would be able to read while listening to music, I think I might find myself listening to the music more than reading.

I don't know how you all watch tv while you're reading. That would drive me crazy. I like to have my head 100% in the book. Music doesn't detract for me, but I don't usually listen to anything with words while I'm reading either. In fact, it's kind of fun because songs get associated with stories for me, so I'll listen to it later and get back into the mood of the book. I still can't listen to Amon Tobin without thinking of Akira (which, side note, coming from a person who is not much into manga... that was the most cinematic comic books I've ever read. Amazingly done.)

So I guess to answer specifically, if I'm listening to something it'll probably be a soundtrack (Amelie, Eternal Sunshine, Donnie Darko...), an orchestral type band (Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Monument to Masses...), sometimes electronic (Amon Tobin, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin...) or occasionally just classical music (I have a few of my favorites, but often I'll just stick on an internet radio station). I can elaborate on the ellipses if you'd like more examples.

I try not to litsen to music, but when I'm done reading a batman or Detective issue, I'll re-read it with the batman soundtrack or Batman begins...just works and it's fun.

For interest sake...

Recently I've been listening to the instrumental stuff like "This will destroy you" and "Do Make Say THink"

I generally have the Tv on. Music is more distracting. Sometimes I'll listen to the three Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks though.

I have something on in the background like the TV. I've try to just read but Silence kills me so i have to have something on and music can bring me out of it. So i stick with the TV.

How does this make sense?

How much tv must get "watched" for... no reason at all?

It's easier to get lost in music and lyrics than in non rhythmic speech.

Generally, I don't listen to music when I'm reading my weekly stash. If I were though, it would definitely be classical. I've found that if I try and read while listening to vocal music, I tend to start singing along in my head instead of paying attention to what I'm reading. Same holds true for prose reading as well. Plus most of the time on Wednesday's, my computers busy downloading the video show, which takes a while on my slow high speed connection.

I like to find something that fits the mood of whatever it is I am reading, as the two will always be linked in my mind, so it's best they compliment each other.

When I read something a little darker, or more adult, the music will be a bit darker.

If the comic is a little lighter, like most Marvel titles, it will be more than likely acoustic or poppy.

Yeah, I don't know how anyone can read with a television on. Television annoys me unless I am watching it fully.

Usually I am listening to music while I do...well, everything. Very rarely am I not listening to music. So that's, that. But I don't actively choose something to fit the "mood" of what I'm reading.

I don't think its a very conscious decision. If I'm in a really sarcastic mood, I probably feel like readin Transmet, and I probably feel like listening to something with a punch to it.

I tune out the world so thoroughly that I often find I've missed five or six songs without noticing.

Film scores. Well, mostly film scores. I have a playlist with tracks from the Spider-Man movies, some other Danny Elfman stuff (Batman, Dick Tracy, The Flash), some John Williams, The Incredibles, etc., etc. The Back to the Future score is cool, the theme to The Avengers (Ralph Fiennes/Uma Thurman). Currently digging the first Pirates score and the Hg2g score. (Journey of the Sorcerer... hella sweet). Kill Bill... I also am a big fan of reading comics to remixed video game scores (www.ocremix.org is a great site to find them.) But definitely instrumental stuff. Lyrics mess up my head whilst trying to read (or whilst trying to grade papers.)

*Shakes head*

Sorry, I panicked.

I cant listen to music, or have TV on in the backround or anything like that, because my mind then starts to wonder.
