View Full Version : What mac to get
Hey, i am a born and raised windows user and well i installed safari for windows and fell in love with it. I want to try macs out, and since im 17 and don't make a lot of money, i was wondering what would be the best, desktop/laptop, of a mac and the cheapest for me just to see if i like it, or if you know a way to get mac os x to work on a Pentium core duo laptop. Thanks

if you don't have a lot of money, maybe you should get the cheapest one they offer..the mac mini

But seriously, Apple has great refurbished products found here. (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=A35F9A3&nclm=CertifiedMac)

A question for ya mac users is can you upgrade the memory or harddrives your self (talking bout macbooks) or ya have to buy certain stuff. I'm looking for the cheapest solution. Also do you get stuff like disc to reinstall stuff if you can upgrade harddrive.

You can upgrade things yourself, and each computer comes with OS X installation discs.

So I could get the littlest amount of HD space and ram then upgrade myself. Hmm interesting. I was asking about the Disc cause I know some PC makers either don't include a windows disc or charge you for it.

Lets just give a typical rundown of what's in the MacBook box then.
MacBook
MagSafe power cord and an extension for it
Apple remote
And a little package that has your manuals and the like:
There will be one called "Everything Mac" which is your operating manual, etc.
Then one called "Everything Else" which contains some other stuff and OS X 10.4 installation discs.
I'm pretty sure that's everything...
Oh and some *****ing styrofoam.

If you just want to try it out to see if you like it, ask a friend if you can borrow it for a weekend, or go to the local Apple store and play a bit before you buy it. And if money is a issue then get a Mac mini...
See about 1 year ago I switched to Mac and what I did is spend allot of time at the Best Buy just playing with it, I talked to people who have a Mac, and i even borrowed one over the weekend, and after about a month I went out and bought me a MacBook Pro...
Personally that was the best thing I ever did...
Just 2 days ago i started up my Windows machine after about 6 months, and guess what ..it wouldn't even start. So after fixing it, I ended up giving it to a local charity...

You're really welcome now that I know you're a Mac user.

try them out in a store first, but then just get a macbook or imac just make sure you get at least a gig of ram and it will be plenty quick for everyday tasks and show you how much you are going to like it. But if you really want to commit go with the macbook pro it is priced extremely low for the components it uses.

Refurbs are the best deal around for the macs. You'll get all the stuff that would have come with it new, like the OS Disc. My previous powerbook was a refurb from an authorized reseller and had no problems. My latest PB was bought new.
Memory is very simple to install yourself, not sure how difficult it is to change out the hard drive. I'm thinking of upgrading mine in the near future so I guess I will find out. ;)
