Even though there are probably far more readers than avid collectors on this forum (and some of us that are both), I thought it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to older comics we buy and add to our collections.

For example, today I purchased Captain America issues #109 and #112 (the very first one was #100) of the Captain America series that ran from 1968-1996. I bought one for $25 and the other for $30. Both Jack Kirby art. I was in comic heaven. I have 203 issues collected in this series. My earliest issue is #106.

I bought them from Dave, the owner of my comic shop. In addition to the new comics he sells in the shop, he also has a large warehouse where he keeps his inventory of older comics.

I took a list to Dave of both the Captain America comics I own and the ones I need for my collection. He looked through the list and said that he had all the ones I was missing in his warehouse. He could help me fill in my collection whenever I wanted. All I had to do was to let him know when I wanted/needed them.

I'm more of a reader than collector as you say. I did go after a copy of Spiderman #171 though from August 1977(my birth month and year). As I near 30 I'll probably pick up a couple other issues from August 77 such as Hulk, IronMan, and Captain America.

I have tried to collect wine bottles from the year I was born, which is also '77. I never did think of collect comics. Very cool idea.

Yeah, that is a pretty cool idea, actually. I think I might start looking for comics that came out in the same month and year as my birthday as well.

I told my wife that when I hit 30 I'm gonna spend the day watching Star Wars, reading my 30 year old comic book, and drinking a bottle of 30 year old wine.

Was '84 a good year for comics?

My co-workers sisters friend had two boxes of old comics. She showed them to me earlier. I got me a box full of comics for $50.. Shame there was no Wonder Woman ones though..

I collect, in that I rifle through discount bins and pick up whatever seventies/eighties Marvel I can find for cheap. God bless ROM - Spaceknight, and Shogun Warriors, too.

I said I would do something like that, but it didn't happen, and ended up being a pretty regular day, but with cake.

That and I took the day off and just hung out with my wife, which these days is a fantastic luxury. It's true that the simple pleasures get to be most rewarding.

Collecting actual vintage comics, as opposed to bagging and archiving modern comics for some farcical future investment, is still pretty cool. They have that smell. It's wonderful. I think I'm past the point where I'd do it, but I can definitely appreciate it.

If you don't bag and board them today then someone else can't collect them tomorrow.

Then my failure to do so will only make them that much more rare, right?

We're actually doing future collectors a favor by not bagging and boarding our comics.

And you're looking to do the collectors favors? I shall not forgive them for the 90's (being overly dramatic)!

The issue of spiderman I picked up from 77 was in good condition, though I doubt it was ever bagged and boarded until sometime in the late 80s or 90s. Its interesting to sit back and think about how many people have read this book, or who owned it before me. Another thing I love about old books is the ads, nothing beats those classifieds they used to have - grow muscles for 10 cents, whoopee cushions, etc etc.

I especially like the ads for various Hostess treats...

Iron Man negotiating with hostage takers?
Is this in continuity?

I love the line:

Now's the time for a little heavy-handedness

Yeah!

In keeping with the theme of the thread, I recently found a copy of Uncanny X-Men #94. I've always seen it online but was quite surprised to see it in a store. The nicer thing was that this copy hadn't been slabbed so I could actually read it. My quest to get a full run of Uncanny goes on.

In the box of comics I got, there were some Batman and The Outsiders, What if??, Daredevil, Action Comics that Georger Perez did and some John Byrne Superman issues. The other box had some Alpha Flight, Captain Carrot, Legion and Superboy ones..

Let me know if you decide to get rid of those Daredevil ones.

Ok. I will. My CBG told me to get the Alpha Flight ones. I'll look at those tomorrow. Um.. Should I get the Captain Carrot one.

I inherited a bunch of old comics from my uncle. Most of it is marvel stuff and there is some cool stuff in there. He has the original issues of the dark pheonix saga and what I think is the first appearance of Kitty Pride. There's also a lot of old defenders, doc strange, and x-mens in there. they are from the early to late 70's, are they worth anything?

No idea about the value, but that sounds like some good comics.

it depends on the condition but if it's good then the answer is yes

they're not worth a lot, but something fairly decent.

btw, the first kitty pride is #129 and the first Kitty Pride as an X-Man is #139
