View Full Version : I'm selling my comics/trades on eBay!

I've got a ton of old books that I want to get rid of. I have like 5 years of Batman books, tons of random mini-series and runs, plus the first 30 Issues of Giffen's Justice League(which I might go back and read now.)
I've sold books on eBay before but just like 4-6 issues here and there. Has anybody had success selling alot of books (that aren't really worth alot of money) on eBay?
Or am I better off just taking them down to by local shop and getting maybe a quarter of their worth in store credit?
It's been a few months, but I've sold a lot of stuff on eBay before. It's kind of hit or miss. You're not going to get a whole lot for back issues. I've been selling back issues to my lcs lately.

A number of folks on this forum have mentioned from time to time that they have sold their floppies on eBay. I'd like to know more about how that's done. I've never sold anything on eBay. It's a whole new world to me. Could some of you walk me through it. How do you decide what to charge? Do you sell individual issues? Do you bundle several together at a time? Sell by the box? Do you recoup the money you originally spent on the comics? Do you actually make money?
The reason I'm interested in this is because a friend of mine and I are interested in selling comics in order to finance other comic purchases for our collections. We have a couple of avenues where we can buy someone else's collections so that we have inventory to start with. We aren't looking to make money per se - just finance our comic addictions for Silver and Bronze age additions.
Would appreciate the sharing of any thoughts or personal experiences.
I'm almost certain that there's a thread devoted to this just waiting to be dragged back to life.

I was going to sell the last 3-4 issues of the Outsiders series, but since it's the Checkmate crossover, I decided to stay greedy and keep those issues. :P

Still $15. I'd up the price if it was going overseas, but Canada is considered by me to still be 'local'.

Some of you may remember me mentioning that I had to avoid eBay like the plague, because I treat it like the impulse buy section at a store and bid on everything in sight.
Well, the other day Conor mentioned in his Stack Week article that the next Starman omnibus wasn't going to be out until 2009, and that there was six of them. At that rate, I thought to myself, they wouldn't all be out until 2013. I was not going to wait that long. In another tab I had eBay open to check out what Jimski's friend had for sale.
One thing lead to another and I am now the proud owner of 40 miscellanous issues of Starman, and am probably going to own a complete series of another comic in about 24 hours. Keep in mind, I read mostly in trades. My first big issue purchases will be from the 1990s. Oh well.
Surprisingly cheap (I paid $10 for 40 issues of Starman). Anyways, I guess its time for me to start scrounging through dollar bins. I can't live with having 40 issues but not being able to start it.

Steve, I actually posted about this in a previous thread. While I don't know how to link threads, I found my post. Here it is again, for everyone's glory.
Posted 3/20/2008:
Just wanted to share with folks. I just made about $300 bucks on eBay selling off about 100 comics. Most of them were runs of issues, and some were important things and others just regular old issues. A lot of people don't like eBay, but I think if you play it right, comics are the easiest thing to get rid of. Here's some tips that have worked for me:
1. Be open to who you sell to- I let bidders from around the world buy my product. If you ship through USPS, the shipping is minimal, like $15.00-$25.00, which you make up by charging such for international bidders. In this last batch I sold 4 of my 20 lots to international folks.
2. Provide pictures- I always take one picture that shows all of the issues. This helps people see that they're not beat up or shitty in any way. Remember that quality is subjective. If you let people decide, it's much easier.
3. Start your bid at $.99- I can't stress this enough. A lot of folks like to set reserves or start the bid at the minimum amount they want to make. That's the kiss of death in my book. People shop on eBay to set their own prices. Let them. If you're just going to donate the books or get 10 cents a pound, you might as well make at least a buck off of each run. Often, you'll be surprised at what you'll get. Let me provide some examples. In my last sell off, I sold Hellboy: Darkness Calls. The auction started at $.99, but ended at $31.00. A little crazy for 6 issues, maybe, but the person that bought them thought that's what they were worth. Selling Hellboy helped me make up for the fact that Marvel Zombies 2 sold for only $5.00. They both started at $.99, and I got what the market thought they were worth, not what I thought they were worth.
4. Only sell big name stuff- This might seem silly to say, but a lot of indie stuff does not sell on eBay, unless it's something popular that the masses are just getting wind of. Don't expect to sell all of your Jeffrey Brown books right away or for a pretty penny. The demand just isn't really there. It sucks, but it's the truth. Again, I could be wrong here, but my experience has shown me that I'm just stuck with indie stuff because the cost to post them over and over outweighs what they'll eventually sell for.
5. Keep it simple- A lot of people think eBayers want flash, but they don't. They're perusing through page after page. Be simple, be upfront, and frank. Let them know your policies on returns, payments, etc. from the get go. It will keep people coming back. Trust me.
6. Bag and board everything- I know not everyone does this, but I sell a lot of comics because I'm willing to ship them bagged and boarded. It may seem silly, but this gives people the idea that the comics are protected and well taken care of. Think about what you would want if you were the buyer. I think even the least anal of us might prefer comics in bags and boards over non, especially when buying from strangers.
I've had great success on eBay, and I hope these tips help those who are trying to get rid of some of their back stock. I rely on this to keep my tiny apartment tidy and for extra "investment" money that I can pour into my habit. Happy selling!
UPDATE: I, again, recently sold more comics on eBay and made about $200. Surprisingly, my highest seller was the first issue of Kick-Ass, which went for $20. Like I said, surprising, no?

It seems that today was the day everyone got the Starman Omnibus read. About three entire runs of Starman went up for anywhere from $60-$300. It excites me that I got those 40 issues for $10. Now I'm kicking my ass trying to fill in the holes though. I think I would have rather just paid the $60 for all of it.

You know, I had the same problem, but I found my answer at ComicsPriceGuide.com (http://www.comicspriceguide.com/default.asp). There are a lot of collectors on this site that are selling some of their stuff. If you find the right person, you can buy specific singles or entire runs on the cheap and they do everything through Paypal. I bought a ton of Captain America and Starman stuff off of here, and everyone, in general, seems to be really nice. This is also where I found my Alias Omnibus.

That's too bad that it didn't work out for you. Some of the folks may have raised their prices since I've been on. I remember spending about $1.50 an issue with low shipping a couple years back. But with the economy in the toliet, that may have changed.

But with the economy in the toliet, that may have changed. Most were $3, and with 40 issues that adds up to a bit much. The thing is, I'd probably be willing to spend that on each one separately but its tough to convince myself to spend $120 when I just bought the same number of issues for $9 and shipping.

I know how you feel. I just picked up 20 or 30 random issues of Grant Morrisons Doom Patrol in the 25 cent bin at my LCS and I would love to have his whole run but damn is it going to cost me a lot more to get the rest.

It basically encapsulates all of what's been going on in the Marvel cosmic for the last year to year and half. If you've been interested in reading these and want something more complete, here's your chance to get it all on the cheap.

I bid on a ton of stuff in there.
Awesome! Good luck and happy bidding!
As a side note, if you win and like the way things go, I post comics for sale every month or so and its usually complete runs or story arcs.

I dont wanna wait that long! It looks soooooooooooooooooo good!
Seriously I've just seen random pages and/or panels and I laugh everytime. The scene of Rogers telling Captain Marvel (the female version) to go home and make him dinner.....Didnt expect that.

As a Deadpool fan, I think the wackiness is right up your alley. And Immomen...oh lord, Immomen is magical in that book.
Wait, I'm not making this any easier, am I?

Your not. :)
But that's okay, I guess I have no choice but to wait for Feb. Kinda weird it's taken this long for Marvel to publish a complete collection of the series. Especially since it's only 12 issues.

I'm not surprised. The book was canceled because the sales were poor. So of course they are going to drag their feet in regards to a book that had poor sales when it came to issues.

I'm surprised at how much I've been able to take in with e-bay auctions. I started out just looking to get rid of some comics, maybe get a little money back, but I think I've actually done pretty well. Got rid of a sweet X-Men lot from late 80s, a Goon #1 (which went for way more than I thought), and have some huge bids on Loeb/Lee Batman issues, and that's an incomplete set!!
Then again, there was stuff I thought for sure would go but didn't - Spider-Man: Blue 1-6 starting at $4, Captain America #25, some other complete runs.
And then again, there was stuff I thought wouldn't sell, but ended up doing pretty well - Angel from IDW, post-House of M series, a Marvel Universe Deluxe Handbook Essential.
I guess the lessons here are:
1. Don't expect to make back what you spent. But if you're done with them, comics still seem to do pretty well on the e-bay.
2. Start bids low - that seems, to me at least, to bring people in.
3. Don't try to second-guess what people are interested in.
I'm probably going to keep this up for a while, or at least until I'm stuck with a stack of comics no one is interested in.
Then I'll just put up a big, random lot!
Just a heads up that I have 12 more listings on ebay. Look me up under my user name, blovati. I have nothing but glorious comic lots with most of it being newish issues.
Some highlights:
Hellboy: Wild Hunt
