How often do you restart your pc? Is it bad to have it running for 3 days straight?

as of right now, i just rebooted 19hrs 33mins ago...my system crashed...usually i get something like 5-6 days straight uptime max...i try to turn it off every 3 days or so...and no, i don't think being on for more than 3 days will hurt anything...the current uptime on my FreeBSD file server is almost 95 days

I usually reboot a few times a week. As far as I know leaving a PC on for extended periods of time isn't bad at all. There was a story on digg earlier in the year about a guy who didn't turn his computer off for 10 years.

I just upgraded to sp2 so its only been a couple hours now, but before that it was about 20 days. I only restart on hotfixes and upgrades, all other times i put it into S3, ram-alive, suspend (stand by). You really don't have to restart at all anymore.

I never restart by choice. Only when something goes wrong or I install something that needs it. I usually get a week or two between restarts.

I have a laptop, so when I take it to school I have to shutdown. I also dual boot, so when I want to use Windows I have to reboot and vice versa. Most of the time I leave it running linux as often as possible.

Since most of you seem to leave it running on for extended periods of time, I recommend that you look into running a distributing computing program like Boinc. (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/) A lot of good projects to pick from.

My old PC I left it on 24/7 and rebooted every so often but when I got this one I decided to just turn it off every night and turn it back on when i wake up..other than that I only reboot after updates or something so not too often.

Yea thats true, but how often do you install new things. Sometimes you don't need to restart.

My server stays up 24/7 (no Exchange = no email). I think it has been that way for a few weeks now. My PC I shutdown every night because it is so goddamn noisy!

I'm usally too tired to realize all the noise my computer makes, sometimes I also leave my external hard drive running. During winter I can use my computer to heat my room. ;)

For desktop pc better performance, I suggest you set your desktop background/wallpaper and screensaver to "none", then right click on desktop, click properties, click 'appearance', choose ' windows classic style'.
Then Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/display properties/screensaver/monitor power/power schemes/settings/turn off monitor after 10 minutes, and set the next 2 drop down boxes ( 1. Turn off Hard Disks, and 2. System Standby) to "never"/apply/ok/ok.

Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Advanced tab /under Performance click on Settings / Visual Effects tab/
Adjust for best performance / Ok / Apply / Ok
Then Start/Control Panel/Display/display properties/screensaver/monitor power/hibernate/take check mark out of "Enable hibernation"/apply/ok/ok. Do not to use hibernate on desktop
If I'm going to be away from the pc for more than an hour, or whenever there is lightning in the area, then after shutting it down properly, I unplug the UPS (which all the computer stuff is plugged into) and disconnect the cable.

I shut it down every night.

Same here. No need for it to be on all night when I am sleeping.

Mines been running for two and a half weeks now. Usually after three weeks Windows XP will start acting stupid and I'll have to reboot.

I reboot every 2 / 5 days normally. I have an older laptop though (Pentium 4, 2.6 G, 760 RAM) so i need to reboot more often than the average joe, i think.

I usually leave mine on until sh*t gets slow. Azureus usually slows down my PC especially when returning from standby. I just have this thing about having DSL and not downloading anything, just lettign all that go to waste while I sleep, so I leave it on every night downloading something big. :D

Another time I shut it down is when I feel the heat of the processor from my leg with is about 2 feet away. That's when i know the PC's screaming. Oh and updates too.

I restart my system every Monday morning before I start work. That's 1 time a week unless I'm forced to restart after an upgrade or Windows update.

I work online so I use my system to it's capacity about 14 hrs a day and I've never had a problem keeping it running all the time. The longest I've gone without restarting is 3 weeks. But that was when this Sony Vaio was brand new.

It's amazing I can get away without rebooting for a whole week at a time because during any workday I'm running most of these programs at the same time:

Photoshop CS, Dreamweaver 8, In Design CS2, Word, Excel, Power Point, Photoshop Elements 5 (forced to use it for work), Skype, MSN Messanger, Limewire, Firefox, IE 7 (lots of open browser windows), TextPad, 3DFTP, Perfect Keyboard, Google Desktop, Gmail Notifier, etc. Then there's the stuff running in the background like Norton Antivirus, Windows Defender, etc.

Hey, it's Sunday night. I better start closing my open programs now so I can restart in time for work tomorrow! ;-)

Sometimes my computer stays on for weeks, then one night if I'm not doing anything like downloading, encoding etc, I'll turn it off. But I usualy leave it in stand by since its not good to keep turning on , and shutting off your computer.

My computer is like a toaster. I walk over an consult it whenever there's something I'm curious about.

Invariably I spend less time on the computer than it takes to start-up the thing. Therefore, leaving it on reduces the time I have to spend sitting in front of it.

I shut down my computer every night, it's like a habit.

I really hate noise when I sleep, and my computer is close to where I sleep, so I just just it down.

My computer is always on except the few times I'm afraid of lightening taking out the power. It's best to leave your computer on and only restart it from time to time when necessary. The theory behind that is that due to temperature metal can expand and contract and there are alot of small metal connections making your computer work. if your computer is properly made then while running it will hold a near constant temperature thus increasing the life of the motherboard ond other components. The only downside is that your hard drives are always running but with the way hard drives are made these days and their growing storage capacities odds are a user will upgrade their hard drive long before it stops working.

The personal record of most reboots in one day would have to be like 11. Though I was using Windows 98 before I upgraded to 2000.

End of each day I usually shutdown, but have left it running weeks on end if I'm downloading big files or encoding videos.

I only reboot when necessary. I think the longest I have gone before rebooting was 12 days.

Are you talking about servers or your PC at home on which you play games and do some work?
I was very surprised, as I read the first posts of this thread. 20 days did not switch off, even did not restart? wow....

I only restart the PC if Windows had a hang-up or it is required after installing a program. The maximum I have my PC switched on is reached while LAN parties (in most cases two days).

Usually my PC is switched off, but if I need it for Revision3, editing my website, music, designing and else it's on. A period of five to eight hours is then the maximum.

How often do you restart your pc? Is it bad to have it running for 3 days straight?

I don't restart my computer for weeks. I was once running a Linux server that ran for a year without restarting.
