Ok, I want to get a trade that is really bulky and will take me several hours to read. I don't want to spend $20 on a trade and be done in 40 minutes.I want something that is like a small novel and will take me a long time to read

Everybody's gonna ask what kind of story you want, so start thinking. Tell us what you like generally.
But, looking at my shelf:
JLA: Year One by Mark Waid. 320 pages.
JSA: The Liberty Files by Dan Jolley. 260 pages. It's a self-contained Elseworlds story about Batman and some JSA regulars in WWII. It's really dope. I did a review in the "Trade and graphic novel reviews" thread.
Watchmen is long.
Runaways in hardcover. I think the first one's kinda pricey, but the other two are huge and only cost around 17 bucks. Then again, I'm the only one who reads it in HC. Everybody else reads in digest.

FROM HELL!!
I hail this thing as probably one of the top dozen or so books I've ever read, but I swear I don't think I've read it more than twice in the six years I've had it it's just so big. It's well worth the time to read, especially if you want something big and dense. I think it retails for $30.
Also, look for:
The One Volume BONE
Alex Robinson's BOX OFFICE POISON and TRICKED
DEMO by Brian Wood is only $20 and a nice bit of material
The INVINCIBLE and WALKING DEAD hardcovers pack a good punch for $35 each
and Paul Pope's HEAVY LIQUID and 100% are also pretty lengthy reads for their $20 price tags.

If you want a big ol' book of nostalgia, I'd recommend the "Crisis on Infinite Earths". That should take you a while to plow through.

The Savage Dragon Archives are huge and cheap and some of the best superhero-y comics I've ever read.

Love and Rockets in the new editions is also something you can really sink your teeth into.

Just under 600, and 1300 pages respectively.

I don't know how I forgot this earlier, but the pocket book editions of Strangers In Paradise. All right at the 500 page mark.

The Complete Soulwind (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Soulwind-Scott-Morse/dp/1929998732/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4586013-0840152?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181910166&sr=8-1) by Scott Morse. One of my all time favorite comics. Page count: 520. Plus, you'll want to read it at least twice to get the most out of it.
Also Bendis' pre-Marvel work, Jinx (http://www.amazon.com/Jinx-Definitive-Brian-Michael-Bendis/dp/1582401799/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-4586013-0840152?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181910813&sr=1-2) (480 pages) is pretty hefty. And a good book, too.
Castle Waiting (http://www.amazon.com/Castle-Waiting-Linda-Medley/dp/1560977477/ref=pd_sim_b_5_img/102-4586013-0840152?ie=UTF8&qid=1181910988&sr=1-1) (448 pages). I'm about halfway through this one. It's a pleasant read, though it isn't blowing me away so far.
One of my favorite anthologies, Flight (http://www.amazon.com/Flight-2-Becky-Cloonan/dp/1582404771/ref=pd_sim_b_1/102-4586013-0840152?ie=UTF8&qid=1181910988&sr=1-1) Vol 2 is 432 pages of gorgeous indy creator goodness.
For some Indie Cred,
Pick up Cerebus: High Society, Church and State Vols 1&2, or Jaka's story.
Dave Sim literally invented the Phonebook style collection.
PLus Church and State is consistently on top 10 lists as best indie comics ever.

I want something that takes itself more seriously than a trade of Astonishing X-men or something like that and I want it to be serious. I watched Serenity the other day and I think reading something like that would be cool.

I can't read cerebus, I heard there's rape and baby throwing in it and my mom would never let me read it

Wait, do you want something serious or not serious? I’m a little confused by your statement.

I think he wants something serious but not overly mature cause of parental scrutiny.
Get DEMO. Great, heartfelt storytelling with an edge to it, but nothing terribly brutal.

So, if I'm reading you correctly, you want mature themes, but not necesssarily adult content?
Check out The Surrogates (http://www.amazon.com/Surrogates-Graphic-Novels/dp/1891830872/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-2545868-3368624?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181933631&sr=8-1) from Top Shelf. Really, I think it's one of the best science fiction comics in recent memory. It's only 208 pages, but I think you'll enjoy it.
I can't read cerebus, I heard there's rape and baby throwing in it and my mom would never let me read it
That's too bad. (Though there's more rape and baby throwing in DCU books these days, don't tell mom) ;)
and for the record, I don't remember any rape in Cerebus, but it IS controversial, stay away till you're older.
The baby throwing is light-hearted.
EDIT: It has been a while since I've read these trades though.

Did we see the same Serenity?

Astonishing takes itself pretty seriously I think. It didn't forget the funny, but it's by no means a fluffy book.
Seriously. JSA: Liberty Files.

I think so. While it’s not pure comedy, I thought the Firefly movie wasn’t necessarily a serious drama or anything. It’s like a space action romp (which is what Astonishing is currently, which is why I was curious as to the differentiation).
(iDave – sorry, not meaning to derail your thread)

They strap the bodies of their freshly killed friends onto their ship. And the last battle....kinda dark.
It's darker than Star Wars at least.
Anyways...
How about Joss Whedon's Fray?
