Okay... it was about a month ago that we broke the story that Keanu Reeves, Patrick Wilson, and Jude Law had all been offered significant roles in WATCHMEN. Since then, Keanu Reeves passed on the film, and the stories online make it sound like it was a simple matter of him not wanting to do it.
Not quite. Actually, Keanu priced himself out of the film, and Warner is (wisely) banking on the idea that Zack Snyder and the material are the real stars of this movie, the way they were for 300. As a result, they’re looking for actors, not movie stars. The Keanu stories confirm that we were right about Dr. Manhattan at the time we went to print, and Snyder’s also said in other interviews that we are right on the money about the other roles we’ve reported on. So where are things now with the movie?
Well, CHUD.com has a very interesting story up today, and it seems that they’ve got it confirmed thanks to an actor who isn’t in the film, but almost was. Paddy Consadine was a heck of a good choice for Rorschach, but I’m thrilled if it turns out to be true that Jackie Earle Haley’s going to be wearing the mask in the film now. Sure, it makes this a wee bit of a LITTLE CHILDREN reunion, but that’s fine. Both Wilson and Haley are great choices for their respective roles.
And now that Keanu’s not playing Dr. Manhattan, who is? Well, I know they flirted with Billy Crudup for a time, but my sources tell me that the favorite for the role now is Jason Patric, which I think is a hell of a good choice. In fact, that’s probably the best suggestion I’ve heard yet for Dr. Manhattan in all the years the film’s been bouncing around. Patric always seems to be slightly disconnected from the world, but he doesn’t come with any of the baggage that Keanu had.
The Comedian’s still up for grabs, too, but they’ve looked at everyone from Ron Pearlman to Nathan Fillion for the role. Right now, it sounds like there’s one actor who Snyder likes for the part, but I’m not at liberty to divulge his identity yet. Let’s just say it’s a “punishing” choice, and the actor brings a lot of comic book credibility to the role if he ends up playing it.
I’m sure we’ll start hearing more concrete news in the weeks ahead, but for now, I think it’s obvious that Snyder’s casting a wide net, and he’s determined to put together one of the best casts any comic book film has ever had, which is only fair considering the source material.

As long as Zach Snyder doesn't mess up the source material and doesn't stray away from it at all then this will be a great film. But for now I'm just hoping he doesn't mess up.

Alright, I haven't been following it for a while simply because I didn't think it was going to pan out and I thought, like the Halo movie, that it was just going to be discarded or set aside for the distant future.
So, what was the deal with re-casting Gerard Butler to do something in Watchmen? I heard that from so many people and I got really excited.
Also, I'm going to start on photoshopping those pictures into their respective characters (Rorchach really will just be a masked face-less figure so there's no need to really make that one, and without the mask he's just a normal person who sees dog-heads in ink blots.) I must warn you all that I'm not a wizard at photoshopping, so if they're awful, feel free to yell at me.
Edit: First one is done. Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan. I think I did a pretty good job for such a short time.

OMFG They destroyed the watchman. What is with the choice of Malin Akerman for Sally Jupiter? She looks like a bimbo who thinks blowing the director is a great career move and the same can be said about Matthew Goode. It also sounds like it's going to be all green screen, that is going to suck! Next we will hear it is going to be rated PG-13 , re-written to take place in modern times , and they are cutting out all of the pirate narration. It could be worse they could **** with the ending. F.Y.I. they should have cast the most but ugly red head of them all Ron Howard as Rorschach!

Another cast member announced
Carla Gugino has joined the cast of Watchmen, the upcoming film based on Alan Moore's seminal DC Comics series, as Sally Jupiter aka The Silk Spectre, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She joins Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Malin Akerman in the film, which is set in an alternate America that has passed a law banning costumed crime fighters. When one is murdered, the remaining members set out to solve the mystery.
Sally Jupiter is a burlesque dancer turned costumed heroine and sex symbol who was once a part of the Minutemen, a group of heroes who preceded the Watchmen. She is also the mother of Laurie Juspeczyk (Akerman), who has reluctantly taken on her mantle as The Silk Spectre II. Sources said Gugino will portray Jupiter in varying eras, playing different ages throughout the movie.
Zack Snyder (300) will direct the film, which is set to start shooting in the fall in Vancouver.

If they did shoot the Mars footage I'd really like to see how Dr. Manhattan creates the glass structure on Mars and how it would be done on film. Definitely a cool visual in the comic.
I'm still very concerned. The task of translating the Watchmen to the big screen AND give it mass market appeal seems insurmountable to me.
Granted I wouldn't care if it didn't appeal to the mass market, except for the fact that it has to so it can justify the budget.
Zack Snyder really delivered on 300, in my opinion. However, the source material consisted of a lot of style and a very, very simple story. So simple, in fact, that they added to it for the movie.
Watchmen has style, sure, but it's the substance of the story that's so weighty. It's a lot of story to tell in one movie.

Some juicy info from Chud...
A couple of weeks ago Moviehole brought us the news that Zack Snyder had gotten Warner Bros to cough up the dough to allow him to shoot the Tales of the Black Freighter segments from Watchmen. This pirate comic within a comic are not integral to the main plot of Watchmen, but rather comment on the themes and characters in the story, so it was always the first thing cut out by screenwriters taking a crack at the material. Now a scooper has given me more info about what the possible plans are for the Black Freighter: according to my source, there's talk of doing the pirate story in animation*, and releasing it on DVD at the same time that Watchmen is in theaters.
Snyder told me at Comic Con that he wanted to do the Black Freighter 300 style. Could the change to animation be to get around the strike (animation writers are under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) for some reason, not the WGA)? The idea of releasing it on DVD at the same time the movie is in theaters (if true - repeated attempts to confirm or deny this story with Warner Bros bore no fruit) is sort of weird - other films have seen animated tie-ins show up in stores, but Black Freighter has just about zero to do with the main Watchmen story. Would this confuse casual fans?
Meanwhile, another exciting development is happening on Watchmen, one that will expand the depth of the film and add some of the detail that just can't be fit into a movie. Readers of the comic know that writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons packed Watchmen with background and back story detail that creates a rich and rounded world, including text pieces at the end of every issue. A number of the text pieces take the form of excerpts from Under the Hood, the memoirs of Golden Age crime fighter Nite Owl, telling his own history and that of the original hero team The Minutemen. Picture this concept: while doing promotion for the book, Nite Owl appears on a newsmagazine show which profiles him, his career and his friends in The Minutemen. Just such a newsmagazine show is being filmed, and it's being done in period early 60s style, reflecting the release date of the book in the Watchmen universe. Apparently this will be a full hour long. I don't know what the plans for this are - I have to imagine it will be on the DVD release, which is rumored to be a mega-packed set. This would actually make more sense as a day and date DVD release to promote the movie, as far as I'm concerned, but it would probably also give away too many story points to the uninitiated, as the secret history of The Minutemen has a major impact on the characters in the main story.
Again, I couldn't get either of these stories confirmed or denied by Warner Bros, and the animated Black Freighter is something that's not a done deal at the moment and could still change, but my source is a damn good one.

Gerard Butler has revealed he will voice the lead character in Watchmen's animated spinoff Tales Of The Black Freighter.
The animated short will be based on a comic-within-a-comic story in Alan Moore's superhero graphic novel. Black Freighter revolves around a captain stranded at sea as he tries to find a pirate ghost ship that will guide him home. The story portrays the mental deterioration of the captain and draws parallels to the main Watchmen narrative.
Speaking to Empire, Butler said: "I’m going to do the voice of the captain. They’re going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime and I’m totally stoked.
"I actually read the script before reading the comic book and I thought it was awesome.
"Then I read the comic book and it’s great. The little bits that have been added define it so much more. It’s very dark and there’s just something so descriptive and scary. It’s this descent into madness but explained in such a sane way that you totally feel it yourself. By the end, my heart was pumping!"
The Warner Bros movie was recently subject to a lawsuit from 20th Century Fox over film rights to the superhero story.
Watchmen, directed by 300's Zack Snyder, will be released in March next year.
I wasn't a fan of those sections of the comic, but I'm sure someone will geek out over the news.

JoBlo gets a WATCHMEN Video Journal on the Costumes of WATCHMEN!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... Our good buddy over at JoBlo.Com have scored the latest WATCHMEN Video Journal - this time with Costume Designer - Michael Wilkinson - taking us through the periods and looks that they're trying to get across in this epic of a Comic Book film. You know - the other day I was in Austin Books here in Austin and an old friend that used to buy a lot of Golden Age from me back in my days as a "dealer" - and he came up talking to me about how he's given up all hope for Comic Book films - that the pictures from WATCHMEN has made him sick of "Rubber Suits" - and frankly... I found myself getting pissed at him. I didn't blow up at him, I just moved along - I was more anxious to buy a couple of key issues I've been wanting... but it got me to thinking. Is he fucking retarded? Seriously. I can see making that comment about Dark Knight... I am not a fan of the rubber Batman suits. But those first shots of the WATCHMEN costumes were pretty dead on. And there's all sorts of fabrics, metals, leather and stuff other than "Rubber" in there. Not just that, but that the costumes actually LOOK LIKE THE SUPERHERO COSTUMES THEY"RE SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE... well, that's fucking cool.
And now I wonder what he'll say once his priggy bitchy ass sees this clip. Here, where you'll see them matching the costumes not only to the eras and the fabrics depicted in the film... but also the styles and looks of the illustrations in the actual comic. Yeah, let's just blow this fucker off as BS rubber crap. Sorry. I'm just thrilled by what I'm seeing on WATCHMEN. Of course - if... Warner willing... we see a WATCHMEN trailer on DARK KNIGHT... I hope it literally fries the minds of fandom. It's time to see this stuff moving, speaking and kicking our ass... as it should. Here's the latest Journal, good work JoBlo!!!

More news...
The New York Times reported that Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming Watchmen movie, will release the comic-within-a-film Tales of the Black Freighter as a DVD within days of Watchmen's opening.
Snyder had originally contemplated either incorporating the pirate-themed comic into the film itself or adding it as a DVD extra on the Watchmen DVD.
But Warner Brothers, which is releasing Watchmen, will now release Tales as a separate-but-related Snyder-helmed movie exclusively on DVD five days after the main movie rolls out in theaters. The DVD will also include a documentary-style film called Under the Hood that will delve into the characters’ backstories.
Fans of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen graphic novel will recognize both Tales and Under the Hood as key side narratives that inform and illuminate the main storyline, about a group of costumed superheroes who investigate the death of one of their own in an alternate-history 1980s New York.
Eventually, Tales of the Black Freighter will be followed about four months later by the DVD release of Watchmen itself and then an "ultimate" edition in which the two are edited together into one megamovie, the newspaper reported.
Watchmen is slated for release on March 6, 2009.

Thanks for the link - that's sweet! I'm very excited about this movie, too! I know it's all too typical on messageboards to bitch when you haven't seen the whole thing and therefore can't make a legitimate judgement, but I'm a little bit concerned about the style of the movie. It looks very modern and shiny, and I always thought of Watchmen as gritty, with a really carefully coloured lighting pallette. Even though I know some things have been changed, and Im pissed about them I cant help but have nothing but excitement for the movie. I feel like Rorschach is going a little Dark Knight-y voice-wise but its definitely more appropriate in this situation. The trailer was awesome. Agreed about Manhattan's voice, but I thought the "Leave me alone!" was epic and completely perfect. Showing Rorschach without the mask first would be an awesome easter egg for all the graphic novel's fans and I think Zack Snyder understands that and hopefully will act on it.

Just saw the new trailer and now I've gone from excited to slightly worried. I need to go back and check the book, but isn't Rorschach's voice only described as 'monotone'? What I'm hearing in the trailer is not monotone, but a horrible Christian Bale Batman impersonation.
The only reason this gets me worried is that I would assume that he is going to have a lot of lines in the movie since he acts as sort of the narrator in the book.
Please tell me I should not be worried since I want to be excited for this!!!

11-26-2008, 05:45 AM
The way I saw it is Rorschach became monotone when he went to prison but I didn't see him talking like that all the time. Maybe its because I could see his face when hes in prison so you could read his emotions better and in prison he didnt have any, he kinda had a blank look all the time. So a monotone voice fit better to that face. But maybe they will make his voice monotone when he is in prison.

That's how I imagined Dr. Manhattan's voice also but I'm very interested to see if him having a different voice changes the feeling towards him.
With Rorschach's voice, I'm not entirely sure about. I don't have too much of a problem with it but I wonder if it's going to sound like that with the mask off. Jackie Earle Haley's voice doesn't really sound anywhere near that.

I saw the new posts and figured this had become a "Fuck Fox" thread, but it hasn't yet.
So....Fuck Fox! They sit on a property for years, then let someone else get to the very end of the development cycle before swooping in and saying "That movie you paid for is ours, we get to say when/how it is released and make the money off of it."
Ultimately I don't care who makes the money off of it, I just want to see it become successful so that it helps studios make the decision to continue treating these properties with respect, and I want the release to stay scheduled for March.

I wish Fox would be wiped off the map in every way shape or form. I say boycott all other FOX movies until they agree to have this movie released in March.

Fox is trying to delay the film but nothing has been confirmed just yet, because of all this me and my friends have decided that we will not be seeing the Wolverine movie, and if the even change the date by a day then i will not even purchase the DVD. I have been excited for this movie ever since the first trailer came out, then hearing what Snyder has done and seeing the comic con footage while i was at Comic con was simply the most amazing thing i have ever seen and now i believe that no one could have made this movie like Snyder. hell i even told Diane (discordia77) that i got chills when we saw the footage, all the characters fit into their roles so perfectly, the only problem i see so far is that Manhattans face isn't quite what i wanted to see, but other than that this film shall be simply amazing. although the ending being changed doesnt make me happy, it doesnt make me sad either so i can deal with it. i will be seeing this movie at midnight and i simply cannot wait.

I don't support FOX's decision to sue Warner Brothers. I think it's such a shitty move to wait until the movie's made and then sue in order to get the profits. They clearly don't care about the story/the fans/the product and just want to make money.
BUT
How did Warner Bro's decision to make Watchmen get greenlighted? Did they not know that FOX owned the rights? Did they not care? Is there some sort of expiration date on movie rights you let sit on the shelf? Is this some sort of weird loophole-ish legal situation?

It sucks if this gets delayed, but I don't understand why people are being so anti-Fox about all of this. It's a perfectly legal and smart decision they've made.

It's not a smart decision in the least, it's a D-bag decision, no one would be up in arms about it if Fox would have brought this up say 3 years ago when filming started. Everyone's so mad because Fox is now deciding to delay the film with 3 months left till its release date that is why everyone is so anti-Fox.

It may be legal but I think that underlines part of the problem with the legal process in this country. It is reasonable to expect that if I own the right to something and it comes to my attention that someone else is taking action in violation of that right for me to assert my ownership, but I think that there should be a clear attempt to make that assertion within a reasonable amount of time after that discovery. In this instance there can be no debate that Fox was aware of this project no later than the point it became widespread trade AND public knowledge, yet they did not take legal action until a point well into post production.
I liken it to when people are lookin for a lawsuit as a quick payday. Just because you find yourself in a situation where you think you have a good chance to win a lawsuit does not necessarily mean that the lawsuit is warranted. I might win a suit against you for damages done to my property because you couldn't provide the documentation to prove that the damage wasn't incurred while you were repsonsible for said property, even though I know it's unlikely to have been done by you, Would that make you unwise for not keeping better documentation? I'd say yes, but I'd also say that I was a giant asshole abusing the system.

It is my understanding that Fox notified WB very early on in the process, and they ignored it. Legal action was taken later.

Cease and desist notifications go out all the time from these studios regardless of merit. Fox didn't follow with any kind of proof and the actual owner of the rights Lawrence Gordon swore that he was the sole owner of the rights. Fox walked away from the rights for this 10 years ago and then suddenly decides it never did any such thing but offers no proof that it still holds any kind of agreement? Screw Fox, they're being dicks. This is a precedent setting case because no one has ever been as ridiculous as Fox before, and I further submit that Gary Allen Feess, the presiding judge is a DICK!

An update on what is going on:

Looks like it might be settled, just have to wait after the court hearing this afternoon, 3:30 PST. I think they have kiss and made up and hopefully it will not get pushed back any.

So I'm thinking the hottest way to portray WB and 20th Century FOX making up... Here's my take, Sarah Michelle Gellar vs. Jessica Alba. Giggidy.

Damn, you beat me to it. It sounds like Fox will be getting an up front payment and a percentage of the box office, but they will have no right in the Watchmen name.
