the totally rad guys talk about Star Wars Galaxys (alex) and WoW a lot but does anybody here ever play or currently play City of Heroes and or Villians?

for those of you that don't know CoH and CoV is a MMORPG in which you creat a super hero or villian (type, costume, powers, the whole nine yards) then it gets into the WoW type play where you go on missions kick some ass, and the more ass kicking you take part in, the more powers you unlock as you level up, and along with powers, you get new costume options and other standard MMORPG unlockables

don't mistake this game for another WoW copout..check it out, you won't regret it.

I was in the beta way back when. I think it came out before WoW if im not mistaken. I could be wrong. Anyway I didnt like it that much. It takes way to long to level up and once I got flying I didnt really care to play anymore. All the missions were pretty much the same to.

I've been playing CoX (the generic abbreviation for the two games) for a while now and I do agree that it takes a while to level up (especially if you don't play that often like me). However, they just had a double XP weekend and that is pretty fun, especially doing the all night LAN party and creating new characters just because you can level up pretty quickly.

I have played it and I found it boring I also found WoW boring but anyways the problem with CoX to me is that the npc characters are extremely generic there is no crafting, the pvp is very weak, and almost everything is instanced. On the plus side it has the best character creation in any mmo and it is superhero based which is cool also the flight is great in the game. Im waiting for the upcoming mmos from Marvel and DC for my superhero mmo fix.

I agree that the NPCs can be generic (as in most games), but as far as crafting goes, in the most recent update (called Issue 9: Breakthrough) they created the invention system. http://www.cityofheroes.com/game_update9.html After all, most superheroes don't tinker like medieval blacksmiths so there probably wasn't a perceived need for a crafting system in the beginning, but for some of the origins it's a little more 'in character' so it was added later (pure conjecture BTW).

I don't really do PvP, but there are two types of PvP -- the Arena is (in my opinion) essentially waste-of-time pit-fighting. The other game areas for PvP are actually gameworld-significant in that they are areas contested between villains and heroes, and as you battle other players, you can gain or lose ground for your side (heroes or villains) which incurs bonuses to the side controlling the most territory. Also there are PvP missions which also incur bonuses to your side or penalities to the opposing side.

This wasn't meant to be a 'well, actually' post. Just additional info for those who might want it. :)

I used to play CoH and WoW back in the day, but because I can't handle two sub payments a month I just play WoW now. I loved City of Heroes, but a couple things make me play WoW over it. First, it's incredibly hard to do missions in CoH solo, as the game is centered around going in groups. Also, I didn't really like the debt aspect of dying, although again that's part of the game mechanic.

However, I love the subject matter and the game is really fun. CoH also has regular citywide events, like alien invasions, that allow you to take a break from your normal routine and participate in a huge gathering of players. I really liked that game.

I totally agree that it is hard to solo which is probably why I don't play that much anymore. I also think that XP debt can be a problem for the same reason: if you're trying to do only solo missions you can easily get into a vicious XP-debt cycle dying over and over trying to accomplish missions intended for groups.
