Hey all; being new to this board, I figured I'd get to know you guys by asking the eternal geek question: If you were stuck on a deserted island for 10 years, what DVD's would you bring? ( Imagine it's the island from Lost, which apparently has plenty of power outlets ) Yeah, I know it's usually only 10 on these lists, but we're nerds here....we know 10 is simply not enough! Like they say in High Fidelity, it's not what you're like, it's what you like, so I figure the best way to get to know my fellow TRShow geeks is by seeing their DVD picks. I kinda cheated, as I counted box sets and tv season sets as one, but it's my thread so I make the rules. :) And no, I'm not expecting anyone to be as verbose as I am as to why you chose them...a simple list will suffice. I just really like to hear myself type. Ok, here's my long ass list:

#20: A Nightmare on Elm Street: Infinifilm Edition
-One of the first horror films to obsess me ( the image of Freddy emerging from out of the bed gave my ten year old self nightmares in a big way ) this movie proved that you didn't need a lot of money ( or great acting much of the time ) to tell a great story. The notion that Wes Craven had such a hard time getting studios to buy this concept shows just how shortsighted they can be. The notion of a killer who can only kill you in your dreams is a genius one, and what's more shocking is how long it took for someone to come up with it. This DVD has a really great transfer for such an old low budget movie, and a nice amount of special features.

#19: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
-The OTHER important Sci Fi film of 1977; easily one of my favorite Spielberg movies, I tend to watch it at least once a year. The transfer is decent, and the special features are ok, but if there was ever a Spielberg movie that needed commentary, it's this one. And the finale will always, always give me the chills.

#18: Clerks: Tenth Anniversary Edition
-The first movie I felt was made just for me ( it turns out it was made for about a million other under achieving geeks as well ) 13 years on, Clerks remains as quotable and funny as ever. And no one puts tlc into his DVD releases like Kevin Smith. The great thing about his flicks is that the special features tend to be as funny (sometimes funnier ) than the movies themselves.

#17: The Lord of the Rings: The Extended Editions
-What can I say about these that hasn't been said?? These are the DVD equivelant of masturbation. 3 years later, I'm still pretty damn sure I haven't seen all the extras on these, there are so damn many.

#16: Carrie - 25th Anniversary Edition
-"They're all gonna laugh at you!" C'mon...we're all nerds and geeks here. Who didn't fantasize about "pulling a Carrie at the Prom" to all the assholes in High School and Jr. High?? Plus, Piper Laurie gives one of my favorite performances ever as Carrie's crazy ass religious mother. Also gets special points for introducing me to the phrase "Dirty Pillows" as a euphemism for boobies.

#15: Justice League Unlimited: Season One
- I totally love the version of the DC Universe that animator Bruce Timm created back in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series. To date, that is my favorite version of Batman. He then did Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond and Justice League, but it was in JLU where it all came together. Taking various plot threads that seem barely connected at first and making them come together in an awesome climax, as well as weaving in various story strands from the previous tv series, JLU is Bruce Timm and Company's shining moment. The action was awesome, the characterization was spot on...to me, this is a prime example of Comics Animation done right.

#14: Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 3
-After the pretty awful first season, and the uneven second season, TNG really came together in year 3. In my book, this is the one year where the is not a clunker to be found, all ending with Picard becoming Locutus of Borg...possibly still the best cliffhanger ending ever.

#13: The Alien Quadrilogy
-Ok, so only the first two movies are any good. Use the others as coasters. Great transfers and extras for the movies, this set gives new meaning to the term "comprehensive". Like LOTR, I'm still not sure If I've seen everything on these sets.

#12: Interview with the Vampire: Special Edition
- Yeah, this is the one that's gonna get me a lot of shit on these boards. Whatever. The first three volumes of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles are my favorite books of all time; back in high school ( eons ago ) I always had a well worn copy of one of these books, held together by a rubber band, in my backpack at all times. As a young gay teenager, the notion of staying hot and young forever, having ridiculous amounts on money, and having lots of oral sex ( we all know what the blood sucking is a metaphor for right? ) was super appealing. I fell in love with the perverted family of Lestat, Louis and Claudia instantly. So when they announced the movie version, with Tom Cruise no less, I was livid. But the movie turned out to be super faithful to the book, and It's one of the best Tom Cruise performances ever ( right along with Magnolia, Collateral, and his marriage to Katie Holmes ) And the role of child vampire Claudia? Still Kirsten Dunst's best performance to date. Too bad she couldn't have stayed that age forever like her character.

#11: Boogie Nights
-I was born in 1974, so my memories of the 70's are foggy at best. Somehow the era of my birth must have imprinted on me though, as I have a special affection for the extreme cheese of that decade...the hideous fashion, the cheesy ( but super fun ) disco and funk music, all of it. Boogie Nights captures it all without coming off as just a parody. It's one of the best ensemble casts ever, and I knew right then and there that if Mark Whalberg played his cards right and didn't go down the path of Dirk Diggler for real, he would one day end up with an Oscar nomination. during the first half of this movie, you make fun of these characters for there simplistic, indulgent ways, and by the second half, you feel horribly sorry for them. Not to mention, easily one of the best soundtracks of all time. This DVD is light on the extras ( with the exception of a great commentery track from PT Anderson where he says the word "****" like 300 times ) but my deserted island experience would simply suck even more without Dirk Diggler, Amber Waves, and Rollergirl.

#10. Blue Velvet
- At age 15, after having discovered and becoming obsessed with David Lynch's Twin Peaks, I went and devoured anything Lynch I could find. Blue Velvet was like Twin Peaks, but without censors and restrictions. It's mix of innocent love and extreme perversion like only David Lynch could do. Dennis Hopper as Frank is one of the most quotable performances ever. Briliant from begining to end. And the transfer on the most recent Special Edition is very, very nice.

CONTINUED:

#9: Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 3
-Buffy had a lot of brilliant seasons, but every episode in Season 3 clicked perfectly. Some of the best episodes of the whole series are here, and the story arc involving new vampire slayer Faith and her ultimate betrayal of Buffy is in many ways the highlight of the series. A lot of people say Firefly/Serenity is Joss Whedon at his best, but I'm gonna go old school here and say he was never more on his game than the third season of Buffy.

#8 Wizard of Oz: Three Disc Collector's Edition
-While I tend to believe that I was born gay, if it's not that, then it might be my early obsession with the Wizard of Oz that made me gay. :) This three disc set is awesome...the transfer is one of the most stunning restorations I've ever seen for a movie that old. Tons and tons of extras here. An awesome set.

#7: The John Waters Collection
-nothing sums up my sense of humor more than these early flicks by John Waters, most notably Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, and the later PG rated ( but still funny ) Hairspray and Polyester. John Water's love for the trashy side of American life is in full effect in these early movies, and there's shit that happens here that would make the guys from Jackass cringe...in a good way. I will be quoting his campy, venomous dialouge probably for the rest of my life. And no one in the film industry gives funnier, better dvd commentary than John Waters.

#6: The Indiana Jones Trilogy ( mostly for Raiders of the Lost Ark )
- Raiders is simply the greatest adventure film ever made. This DVD looks great, and the extras are pretty good without going all LOTR/Alien Quadrilogy crazy. Plus the other two movies are fun too...

#5: Superman: Ultimate Movie Collection
-Superman: the Movie remains the template for making a great Super Hero origin story, nearly 30 years on. Perfect casting, (except for poor Margot Kidder ) Perfect Score, it's got it all. This DVD set is awesome...not only do you get two versions of the original film, but two versions of Superman II ( including the Richard Donner version of said movie ) Superman Returns AND the fully restored Fleischer cartoons from the early 40's. Not to mention hours and hours of great documentary footage. Of course, the set also comes with Superman III and IV , but again, like the later Alien movies, you can always use them as coasters. This is how one does a DVD set.

#4: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Director's Edition
-Easily the best Star Trek film ever made, as well as one of the best sequels, period. Khan is the greatest Sci-fi villain, right under Darth Vader. And don't tell me you don't get a little choked up when Shatner says "human" at Spock's funeral. The Director's Edition has a pretty damn good transfer and some decent extras to boot. For me, this one never gets old.

#3: Halloween: 25th Anniversary Edition
- Totally tame by today's standards, John Carpenter's original film has something most modern day horror flicks totally lack: Suspense and atmosphere. As far as I'm concerened, this is THE "Killer lurking around the corner" movie...all others are pale imitators. The 25th Anniversary DVD has a really great transfer and tons of extras, although it's missing the slightly longer tv version that was on the earlier DVD. Oh well, this version still rocks. Still my favorite horror flick. Accept no substitutes.

#2: Twin Peaks: The Complete Series
Ok, this one isn't quite out yet, but it will be in the fall, so I'm jumping the gun and putting it on here already.Twin Peaks remains to this day my favorite show of all time; other beloved shows of mine like Buffy, Angel, Star Trek, Lost and Battlestar Galactica certainly have managed to stay more consistent for far, FAR longer than Twin Peaks ever did, yet what David Lynch and Mark Frost managed to create just in those first 17 episodes ( the entire "Who Killed Laura Palmer?" story arc ) overshadows almost every thing else in it's potency. And the episode where Laura Palmer's killer is revealed still stands as the best hour of fictional broadcast television ever.David Lynch and Mark Frost's dirty fingerprints are all over shows like Six Feet Under and even The Sopranos ( both with their reliance on dream sequences ) and most especially Lost and Veronica Mars. Funny thing is, Lost is now getting a lot of the critisism that Twin Peaks suffered through ( "they are taking too long to solve the mystery" etc ) although the fact that Lost is well into it's third season before these complaints started shows that America has learned a wee bit of patience since the Peaks glory days. In any event, watching this show is liking falling into a weird alternate world every time I watch it, no matter how many times I see it or how many years go by.

#1: The Original Star Wars Trilogy
-Do I really need to say anything here? I didn't think so.

DVD's that almost made it to the Island:

Some came very, very close, like Excalibur and Poltergeist, but their terrible transfers and lack of special features made me leave them behind. Also, some others I watch a lot but not quite enough to crack the Top 20, like The first 2 Spider Man and X-Men movies, David Lynch's Wild At Heart, Amadeus, The Exorcist, The Shining, Kill Bill ( both of them ) Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Adventures of Prisilla: Queen of the Desert, Waiting for Guffman, The Incredibles, Donnie Darko, Ghostbusters, The Hunger, and The Virgin Suicides.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else's may be.

Holy moley dude, that's a lot of writing!

I had to cull my 140 plus DVD collection to 5, because I had to move continents and well, my comic collection is totally whiped. I didn't know I had 100kg worth of paper!!

So this is what I couldn't live without.

Amelie-The most beatiful film ever made
My Name is Earl season 1.-Made me look at TV comedy differently. So cinematic and beatiful to look at, and funny.
The Critic season 1 and 2 as one set-I love this show so much. I went to great lenghs to get this, as it only recently came out in Australia and I got it from America
Motorcycle diaries-Although not a bike, I want to travel like these guys. We'll see where I end up after my Korean adventure
Kontroll-A whicked awesome Hungarian Flick, there's very few Hungarian flicks (I'm actually Hungarian, but lived most of my life in Australia) I could recomend, but this is really outstanding. Especially for film geeks.

Hardly geeky, but I can't really live without these films.

These were the hardest to leave behind.

City of Lost Children
Taxi Box set (The french ones not the crappy yank interpretations)
Fifth Element
Delicatessen
Scrubs Seasons 1,2,3 and 4

Not too many. After spending the past 6 weeks leaving things behind I don't think I'll collect anything ever again.

I also love Amelie...saw it several times in the theater. Maybe not in my top 20, but it's up there....

And I promise most of my posts won't be so long winded....I was just on a roll tonight I guess... :)

Both seasons of Twin Peaks have already been released. HOwever, the pilot wasn't included in the Season 1 dvd release. So it's pretty hard to find this movie length episode unless you download it or fork up 60 dollars for a VHS of it. The movie, Fire Walk With Me, is still pretty easy to find.

I love love loved Twin Peaks, which I only just saw the whole series last year. The way ABC pressured the writers to screw up the whole show really made me upset, but the first season and a half was so good, I have to forgive it. The last episode however was pretty epic which makes up for it. It also, kept my mind entertained fora couple weeks just trying to make sense of it all and what different things could mean with the White Lodge and Black Lodge. Oh so awesome.

You have good taste sir :)

The "complete series" I refered to is coming out on October 30th, with the Pilot finally included ( all I have is that horrible Hong Kong import that looks like shit ) and a lot of new extras supposedly. They are calling it "the Definitive Gold Box Edition" which I think is kind of a lame name, since it was originally going to be called "The Complete Mystery," a much better title. Also, the cover art is awful. But all will be forgiven if the Pilot looks great and the extras are cool. You can read all the details here: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7500

Now if only the extended version of Fire Walk With Me would finally come out...
