It's a great show based on a pretty good book, but they f'ed with the book's ending too much. The second book also good in my opinion, so the changes carrying over from the first season may not work out.

Yeah except in the book ************* dies and Dex's ************** knows that he is a killer and helps cover it up in book 2.

Saw the leaked episodes of Dexter...and was kinda disappointed. Especially with the first episode. It felt more like a bridge between seasons one and two. Episode two fixed my disappointment though.

I just started watching the first season OnDemand this past month and completely loved it. This is easily the most challenging show I've ever watched, yes, even more so than The Shield. In The Shield you see that Vic and Shane are clearly distraught over some of their actions, and I (the viewer) am able to rationalize their actions with the idea that they're ultimately doing bad for a "greater good" (in most cases). With Dexter, he only kills bad people, but he doesn't just do it to "take out the garbage", he's actually doing it for self gratification. And yet, you still find yourself rooting for this very disturbed character. It's rare TV challenges you in such a way.
Also, I downloaded the first two episodes of season 2, and I'm happy to say that I think it's going to be a very interesting season.

This show has always left me on the edge of my seat. I mean, he's a serial killer, but he's such a sweet guy. I don't want anything to happen to him.
I always compared him to Batman. He's a superhero without superhero powers, just his knowledge and his strength. Unless of course you count Deus Ex Machina as a superpower.

I too think the shield is the best show ever. Its all about the experience that the series gives you and the shield was one that i will never forget. Dexter has taken over as my first slot winner. I watched the season one before it was so huge of a show and was hooked from there. I cant believe season 2 is even better. Only one bad thing to say about dexter, and that is some things aren't so believable(mostly combat scenes). Its so good i can look past that.
I def think its a series worthy of mentioning on the show. You cant go wrong with this show. I haven't ever heard anyone who says ya I started watching Dex but stopped because it was boring me to dealth. :)

It baffles me that the guys have not seen Dexter. Like so many in this thread, Dexter is right there at the top of my list right now. I think there's only one show I like more, and that's Avatar.
I still think I liked season one more, probably because I can't stand Lilah, but season two has had so many episodes ending with "HOLY CRAP!!" moments that it keeps me riveted.
And C Michael Hall is absolutely amazing as Dexter. The way, in season one, that he played this empty shell of a person who was putting on an act of normalcy...*shudder*...it gave me chills it was so good! And it's still interesting this season, seeing him go through some emotional changes.
*very minor spoilers ahead*
Frankly, I'm surprised that, in only their second season, they're dealing with his crimes directly. That seems like something they'd wait to do much later, like a season three or four kind of thing.

Words can't even describe how great this show is. Fantastic! Right behind The Shield as my favorite show on TV currently...I love it, and Michael C. Hall NEEDS more recognition...fantastic actor.
For those keeping up with season 2...Holy shit, things are definitely coming to a breaking point! This is going to be a fantastic season once it's all over, I think...I like where this is going, and I'm ALREADY pumped for season 3, even without knowing how season 2 is going to end.

Yeah, Michael C. Hall definitely sold this show to me.
Especially in the first season, there were just so many subtle things he did that fleshed out such an abnormal character. You can tell the difference when he's truly happy at a crime scene and when he's feigning happiness with his girlfriend.
Very subtle, and very rad.

Dexter is one of the highest quality shows on tv right now, hands down. And it is surprising when I realize how short the seasons are, because it feels like they accomplish so much in half of the time other shows get. Even when they wrap the season up as nicely as they did with the first I find myself desperately wanting more.

*** REALLY MAJOR SPOILERS DON'T YOU DARE READ, TRS BOYS!!!!! ***
I LOVE what they did with Doaks and Dexter at the end there (along with the revelation about Dexter's father). As the audience, we are used to Dexter and his killing ways. We are immune already to what he does, the way he kills. It feels normal to us because we love him. By showing us the horror that Doaks (a killer in his own way) feels and the way his father reacted (the very man who trained him to be this way!) to seeing Dexter's work it reminded us that Dexter is a monster. It's one thing to know objectively that someone kills. It's another to see them do it especially in such a graphic way. We still don't care that he is, he's forever the guy we root for but that moment pushed his sickness in our faces. We've forgotten that it is a sickness. So I loved that. :)
*** End spoilers ***
Can't wait for more episodes. :(

Spoilers begin: So anyway I really like the finale. This show definitely keeps me on edge, I have no idea which direction its going to go. I was a bit disappointed that Doakes had to die, since he was my second favourite character on the show. Good thing they redeemed it by killing off annoying vampire succubus Lyla. Props to the writers for writing a great season that didnt come from Book 2. Now we have a new box of slides and a whole new season of new victims. Also I read somewhere that in the books, Rita's son Cody starts developing urges like Dexter did and Dexter begins to train him.

Extreme spoilers below, I found a color that is close to the background so just highlight the text to read.
I LOVE that Doakes is dead and not by Dex's own hand. I love everything about how this ended. I love that the writers understand that this show is SO good that it needs no cliffhangers. I love that that ***** Lila is gone. I loved the look on her face when she discovered his tools. : ) I still feel awful for Dexter because he has nobody who really knows him, even though that is the very thing that keeps him sane (well, whatever passes for sane with him). The fact that he has to keep up this charade of a "normal" life to protect the people he loves is kind of his saving grace. "If you pretend enough, one day you may even feel what you are pretending to feel". I can't remember if that was his Dad or Dexter himself who said something along those lines but it works for Dexter. This show is the best freaking show, ever. Except for Firefly! (Sorry Firefly, almost forgot you!) I also really enjoy Deb's story lines as well, and Batista is always a pleasure to see. I love that Lila got Batista involved in the whole mess. He's such a sweetheart. The perfect compliment to Dexter.
End spoily things

I agree wholeheartedly that Dexter is one of the best shows out there right now. However, this season has been nothing but a disappointment to me. Don't get me wrong, here. The episodes were very well done, but they just went in directions that didn't feel as powerful as season one.
Harry killing himself? Kinda weak sauce, in my opinion. I like that Dexter gets properly portrayed as a monster..but it sure took them long enough to get there. And Lila was just there for the sex appeal and to be a boring thorn in the side of Dexter.
But, like I said, I consider it one of the best shows out there. I'm just glad they got some of their lamer ideas out of the way so they can focus more of their efforts on a stronger third season.
Did anyone actually read the third book? I read a lot of negative Amazon reviews and am very curious what people thought.

I just got Showtime added to my cable plan a couple weeks ago and caught the last four or five episodes of a season 2 marathon and got reeled in. Caught the finale the next week and that just hooked me.
I Netflix'd the first season and have all of season 2 available with my cable's on-demand service. Gonna grind through that over the next couple of days. :)

I'm really surprised no one on the show seems to have seen the excellent Showtime series Dexter. It stars the superb Micheal C. Hall (Six Feet Under) and it is completely amazing. Based on a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter is a blood splatter forensics officer in Miami with a wicked secret.
I highly recommend this to anyone who loves suspense and mystery, I don't want to give anything away just try it!

Every time I watch TRS I think one of them will have read about, been told about, or stumbled upon Dexter and all its greatness. Given some of the garbage they are admittedly watching, you'd think they would have caught at least one episode.
We need to somehow convince them to watch it...

Agreed. It's my TV show of the year easily such an original and compelling concept. The strangest thing about the show isn't the fact that Dexter kills people (which is weird :P) but its the fact I like the guy and can relate to him.

I cannot wait for the inevitable episode where Jeff starts gushing over Dexter and thanking the forums for introducing him to one of the best TV shows of all time. (well, fingers crossed that will happen - just watch, Jeff will hate it or after all this hype it'll be a let down)
I have Avatar and Pushing Daisies on my lists this year as well, but Dexter tops those. Dexter is an extremely complicated character, played to perfection.
For Christmas my wife gave me the three Dexter books, and I'm currently tearing through them, more addicted to this premise than ever.

They are going to explore his dark side in more depth is my guess. I think the next season he'll embrace the "Dark Passenger" to a new level and he'll begin to replace Harry's code with one of his own. At the same time, I bet, Rita and the kids will begin to unlock new emotions in Dexter that he's never felt before. There will be a deep fundamental conflict as Dexter moves both closer to the light and deeper into darkness. I'm hoping for a real mind fuck.

That sounds like it would be really good. I just hope it doesn't let me down. Although with the caliber of the show so far, I don't think I really have that much to worry about... but still the fear is there.
It seemed to me that the chick who was arranging the funeral and taking donations at the end might end up looking into it more and realize it was Dexter all along. Or at least she would take over that role in the show.

That's a good insight and would make a lot of sense. What's makes that idea even more interesting is the fact that in the first season she had a crush on Dexter. They say there is a fine line between love and hate, perhaps the show will explore crossing that line.
The more I think about it, the more intriguing directions I can see the show potentially take. I think there is cause for optimism my friend.

Big time. It gets a little odd, and I don't know if it's really believable, but it's certainly compelling. They even include Astor, so it's implied that in the future they're going to be a serial killing duo, though Cody is apparently the one with special talents like Dexter for recognizing the "Dark Passengers" in others.

I am fully prepared for them to hate it. I just started watching the series again with my wife, and I must admit that the first four episodes might not grab someone immediately, but she stuck it through a few more and now she loves it too! Why would you be angry about that? The more exposure the better!
I do think it will be edited too much. After all, they have to find at least 15 minutes in every episode to cut, not including the gore (much of which drives the story). Heck, I'm curious to see what they do for a lead-in. I don't think there is a single network show with a 1:45 opening credits like Dexter has. Of the top of my head, Lost's is something like seven seconds, and ER's is about three :)
But the bottom line is that this shows that Viacom has faith in Dexter and is likely to pick up more seasons. I doubt they'll start shooting the show for network TV (which would be a disaster), so as long as the audience gets bigger, I'm happy.
Heck, maybe now it'll get some much-deserved awards (other than the much-deserved opening title Emmy).

Does anyone feel like this show is extremely similar to Death Note (the anime) someone who has the ability to kill criminals based off their own morals. Then works for the police to try and catch the killer (himself). Dexter is less on the supernatural but I find it hard to believe that the author of the books hasn't read or seen Death Note. Even the main character (Light) is similar in that he is extremely disconnected but fakes emotion for his family and friends. Anyone agree?

(Sorry I'm digging up dead posts, I'm way behind, I just finally watched Season2 on my DVR.)
Holy Crap Season2 was really good. I know Lila was necessary for s2 but i hated her the entire time, I always hate charctors that come in and mess with something perfect (Dex & Rita)... I can't wait til' season3. I was thinking it's pretty crazy the storylines of the first 2 seasons. The Ice truck Killer being his Bro.. then season 2 finding his bodies. I find it strange because both seem like stories that would happen like 5 or 6 seasons in.
Dexter should win some award for best intro ever. lol.
I know the TRS guys all didn't like it, my only thoughts was if you watched it kinda how you thought the Shield was.. The Hyper-Real cops. That thought process might get you 2 like Dexter. I dunno... it's sad we all can't connect on this show.. oh well.

Book spoilers ahead.
I really enjoyed the first book. The second book I wasn't a huge fan of. Dexter should not get engaged, he wouldn't let it get that out of hand. And I don't think he would be that excited to see Cody turn into him, also I know Dexter would understand that not everybody who kills animals turns out to be a serial killer. I don't think Dexter would want that for Cody.
But great last scene with the serial killer. Also great ending for Doakes, on par with the TV ending for him. Can't wait for season 3.

I was a fan of the show until season 2. Lila as a foil was nowhere near as memorable as The Ice Truck Killer. She was just kind of there to be sexy and then to go all ape-shit crazy. And the whole FBI thing got wrapped up just a little too neatly at the end of the season to make it believable. Seriously, with as many mistakes Dexter made in Season 2, his ass should have been caught.
Anyway. I love the show to pieces but hope they do better with season 3.

I thought it was a tight ending, but I wanted to see some emotion from Dexter, and particularly Deb/the Miami PD. Just a little glimpse of holy shit, this is devastating to everyone. It felt abrupt and didn't resonate as much as I wanted it to. Still, a brave step and one that those involved apparently were unhappy to hear about.
The really sad thing is that this is all Dexter's fault. He could have killed Trinity before. If he hadn't been so caught up in killing him personally, and had let the police, Lundy and Deb take him out uninterrupted, it wouldn't have happened. He could have completely avoided him, stayed on the sidelines, and contributed his insights to the case for the team's benefit, not detriment. It's only because he got involved that it all happened.

I mentioned on my twitter that the worst part about the show is you know bad things will happen, it's just a matter of how bad it will actually be. I was not expecting that ending.
I'm curious as to what route the show will take now. I think the death will pin Dexter to the Trinity killer and Dexter's life will be put into question.
@nshady: Yeah, I thought it was kind of funny that I was happy the police were closing in on the killer and actually wanted Dexter to just let it go.
