View Full Version : Project Skype: Live Discussion

paper
06-26-2007, 09:22 PM
Hey. Bouncing around the idea to do some live audio chats in addition to all the discussion on the iFanboy main site and the Rev3 forums.

Tossing up a poll just to get an idea of all those interested in potentially taking part.

The general idea is to have some online audio chats to discuss some of the bigger issues that come up on the site or the forums or just to talk about current events with like-minded people.

We'd be using a free program called Skype (http://www.skype.com/helloagain.html). And the easiest way to explain that service is to compare it to instant messaging. But Skype is all about audio. You have a buddy list, and can even call landline phones (though that part isn't free). All you need is the free software and a microphone/headphone setup. This could be an all-in-one unit or even just your laptop's built in mic and a pair of headphones.

So...who's interested?

Maybe. I have a few questions though.

Will there be virtual cake and virtual cookies provided at this get together?

Headsets can be pretty inexpensive too. Here's one (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-980158-0403-Internet-Chat-Headset/dp/B00008ZPJQ/ref=pd_bbs_9/104-0588757-0125500?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1182892898&sr=8-9) from Logitech for $15 clams. You can be chatting with a dude from Iceland about how much his job sucks for the price of a graphic novel.

EDIT: Ignore the first review. That person is a drowner of kittens. I don't know for sure, but I have a hunch.

My vote is for both. If we do a specific discussion like that, we should also designate a moderator who keeps track of the talking points. That moderator could change from session to session if we so choose.

That's cool, I just like for people to keep in mind that a lot of people(myself included) live in different time zones so we should keep that in consideration.

Question though: Has anyone used Skype with more than a couple people? I remember chats with 5+ to be irritating as far as talking over each other goes. But that was probably almost a year ago, so updates may have worked on that.

The FAQ is a little confusing. Some pages say the top number of members in a regular chat is 4 and others say 10.

A "Skype cast" is a thing I think we set up on Skype and then we each have to join manually. I'll look into it.

Me and ACBG just tested it out. Added everybody that posted their Skype name. Works out fine with two people, but we're concerned about the quality with multiple users. I'm gonna look into the Skype cast thing, but if anybody else wants to look at it too, that'd be awesome since I have 40 pages of script to write in the next 3 days and I've ripped out my last clump of hair.

I'm totally fine though. Just on edge.

I think you could theoretically do that if you have a wired 360 controller. You would need to plug the control in your pc and then plug the mic into the control. That might work

mikegraham6
06-27-2007, 01:49 PM
my pc has a mic jack that is similar to a headphone jack and to the best of my knowledge my 360 headset has that type of input, maybe when i get home i'll try to hook it up and see what happens, hopefully my pc wont explode

Oh I love this idea, and would love to participate, provided the repair shop gets my machine fixed. I am a pretty heavy user of Skype, so here's what I've found --

EQUIPMENT - Definitely must depend on what kind of computer you have, but but with my iMac G5, I just plugged in my iPod headphones and used the microphone built into the iMac, and the quality was about as good as a regular landline telephone. Take a moment to look -- your PC or whatever you use might actually have a built in mic, but it's well hidden.

The iPod headphones were necessary for this reason - voice of the other person comes over your computer's built in speakers, which can be heard by the other person, causing a very disruptive echo. By switching to headphones, even simple iPod headphones, the sound goes direct to your ears, no echo. I would suggest -- before buying a bunch of equipment, check into what your computer has now. Call family or friends and see how it works as a test run.

I also found that Skype is extremely easy to use. Actually has instructions and interface that are simple, brief, and logical. I was up and running within 10 minutes.

Overgrownbat and Aaron raise good points about Time Zones -- One humble suggestion is to match people by time zone. For example, Dose, Overgrownbat, and myself are all in Asia. But on then other hand it would be a shame to not include people just because of Time Zone -- I would definitely (humbly) request that certain individuals residing in North America think about somewhat unorthodox times to join a coversation (maybe a rotating schedule, skewed towards US timezones since most people do in fact live in North America) so that those of us in other parts of the world are not always the ones posting at extreme hours of the day (or late night).

I'll post my Skype ID in a few weeks...have to sign off very soon before boxing up my iMac to go back to the repair shop...

Ditto! Very nice voice there Mr. Graham, and that goes for Six Gun too (who could pass for 20+ if you just listen to his voice). You guys do have the good voices, especially Mike. Paper ain't no slouch either. Angela (ACBG) surprised me the most as the "sounds least like you would imagine from reading the threads." I like Fred when he just tosses the "pro podcaster persona" and just goes Mega Fred that we all know and love.

But I think Mike have to walk away with the "best voice" award. Actually sounds rather intelligent too, imagine that. Tonight I took in some of the podcasts where several people took part in the discussion and really enjoyed them all - Fred, Six Gun, Mike, Paper, Angela (ACBG), Kwok -- I think the discussion about with Fred, Six Gun, Kwok and Mike was my favorite because it was nice variety of voices and perspectives which I like (and I am one for the ensemble books to boot). I hope recording these discussions and then putting them on a podcast continues. Great fun to listen to -- my goodness, all these intelligent people...

Thanks, Wally. I agree, that discussion on KT with Louis, Mike, Fred, and Six was really very good. I don't think I got to compliment them when it first came out. Took me a while to get to it. Great discussion.

(if you haven't, check out Fuzzy Typewriter. I sound a bit better when I'm not on Skype. )

ACBG and I had a good convo over skype. I was getting my football gear together and reading scouting reports and was well, a bit nervous and jittery. Talking comics was the perfect antidote.

We chatted Podcasts, Greg Rucka, mail order comics and Gail Simone's merits as a writer and the Cap Omnibus.

Your picture: Looks Young (baby face). Voice: Sounds older, definitely. Probably comes from the overabundance in the media of people your age sounding, well, rather, what's the word? Trying to think of a less harsh word than not very literate or articulate...but not the case with you.

Paper - have checked out Fuzzy Typewriter, good stuff. You have a good voice for audio. One of these days I do want to get to that crazy movie you mentioned about the guy and perfume -- have to go back to get the title. I think though that your show would be really great with Fred as guest in an episode. The contrast of the two of you would be fascinating.

Glad you like the show, Wally. (Perfume: The Story of a Murder)

Fred will definitely be on at some point. We just need to find the right topic to discuss.

Until then....I've heard rumors that Mike has another audio appearance lined up. Did I say that out loud?

A few more tricks up my sleeve too. I'm kinda tired of the sound of my own voice, so I am in talks with some guests. Too early to say just who though.

That's the one -- Perfume, story of a murder. As for Fred, rather than go for something you agree on, go for something you DON'T. I think you two would make a funny and entertaining "point counter point." I thing both of you could handle a controversial topic in a very funny and friendly, but not ugly combative way, which is what is usually the best parts of the iFanboy podcasts. In such a situation, your contrasting senses of humor would come out and be very enterntaing and illuminating.

Well I just stumbled across an app for my phone that turns it into a Skype phone. So I may be participating sooner then I thought.

I've noticed that my sisters karaoke microphone works as a make-shift computer mic. I might just use this until I actually get around to buying something.

Recently replaced my dog eaten microphone, so I am always down. Skype is nice because you can chat while still doing other things... like my homework that I am hopelessly behind on.

Mine's "ComicGeekGL" (it's an oldie, but a goodie)... I have no microphone except for the ones built into my laptop, though... It's on my list of things to get... Anyone have any recommendations?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I tried searching for the Skype names in Luthor's post and most didn't show up. The only ones I could add to my contacts were Angela, CK Porter, Fred, Kwok, Mike Graham, overgrownbat and piscespaul.

My name should be tadstones
