I think the only real benefit of it is bragging rights for the fanboys. It's really frustrating when I want to buy an Xbox 360 because that's what my peer group has and I want to play against them on Live. But there are some really cool games coming out for the PS3. I hate the fact that I have to buy another expensive console just for a few games, which I probably won't even bother buying then.

that's the great thing about this country. you don't have to buy a ps3. you will be missing out on nothing. from what i have seen you seem pretty bright. don't let yourself get caught up in this consumer driven pack mentality. having not played a couple of video games is not going to affect your life at all

They are bad for the companies making the game, because if it's exclusive to one system, the developer is not going to make as much money as they would if they were not exclusive to one console.

Unless of course Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo pay them enough money to make up for it, which is the way it used to work. However now days this practice is seemingly going away.
I personally think the first party games is where the main selling exclusives should be coming from anyway. Now it's really up to Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony to step up their games in order to sell their systems.

It can be a good thing and a bad thing.
I rather play a game that was developed and optimized for the platform that I will play it on. I hate the fact when I know that the game could be looking better or controlling better if the developers didn't have to consider the lowest common denominator between the platforms.
However, it does suck when you see a great game for an other console that you feel you cant afford.

Exclusives are a necessity I think the platforms need to distinguish them selves from one an other, exclusives are the best way to do this. It's these exclusives that are the system sellers too. This is how the importance on GTA IV has some what diminished with it being multiplatform. The attitude of consumers will be to look for exclusive content and if both platforms have exactly the same game then it falls on other exclusives to be the reason for buying a system.

I think we'll be seeing the switch from exclusive games to exclusive add-on content more often now.

Thats the worst of two worlds. Crappy development to work on both platforms and still the crappy things about exclusivity.

Yep, Xbox 360 is getting exclusive content over the marketplace for GTA IV and PS3 isn't.

I had a conversation about this with my friend yesterday, while considering whether I'd get GTAIV for 360 or PS3. I said I'd get it for PS3 simply for the fact that my xbox might die.
Then he said that xbox has exclusive content that's downloadable. I thought about it but realized that I don't really have time to play games as much as I want. I don't need extra missions or whatever since that's all they are...extras. If GTA IV ends up having some sort of online multiplayer mode, then it might be worth it, but even so I'm just waiting for September when the GoW maps are free. And who knows if they will charge for this extra content, which I won't want to pay. I don't know. We'll see if my xbox breaks again and I get a fixed one in the future. Hopefully it's allgood.
