View Full Version : Anyone catch R.Heron diss Pownce on Twit?

They brought it up during the last twit and Leo sort of liked it and the canadian ass kisser was trying to brown nose both Leo and Kevin so that was expected but Heron and Wil Harris
had the same questions as most people in our office had when a coworker showed it to us (it was the same guy who tried to get us to use Allpeers which was supposed to revolutionize something or other):
Why?
And how is this different from what we have?

I agreed with how it was criticized I just see no point in pownce when I can do the same in a IM or email and many other ways...Pownce is pretty lame to me...I don't plan on ever using it again.
Pownce would be a good cell phone app but as a desktop app......blah.

I also heard Wil Harris say he doesn't want to sound too negative because he assumes that Kevin worked very hard on it. I honestly don't think it was that bad. I just think most people don't know what to do with it. I think we'll learn when it's done.

I think it would take off more than it is now (just speculating here) if everybody that wanted to try it could right away. None of this waiting stuff, it discourages people from trying it out. At least it did for me. We'll see.

Yet you're probably going to use it when you get the chance (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7287&page=25). I really didn't get it at first but now, it's okay, I guess. Better than Twitter, for me.
In all honesty, I have a use for it managing groups of people.

I still don't get the point of it. Someone was ragging on us for giving out invites, and saying: "What are you doing, I'm giving the invites to my friends!"
Well... if I gave the invite to my friend, they'd ask: "What's the point of this?" and after my blank stare, they'd delete the invite and send me a file over IM.

I still don't get the point of it. Someone was ragging on us for giving out invites, and saying: "What are you doing, I'm giving the invites to my friends!"I've got a log in (because of a typo, I infact have two logins). After playing around with it I have to agree though. I don't get it.
Twitter never did much for me, my IM buddy lists are pretty much work colleagues, and if I need to send a file ... I'll email the thing as an attachment (IM tends to choke on the size of the files I send).
I like the idea, and can see it being taken to another level with other features later, but as it stands Pownce is late to the game with another "me too" web site. It might be great on an iPhone, but if I want to really hook up with friends, I'll give them a call ... and they really don't need to know that I just finished reading this months issue of Wired, or will be heading to the Mall after work.
Apps like this strike me as being important not for those that need to organise their life, but for people that need a life to organise.

I can find a use for it in a situation where I want to manage people that I don't want to have integrated with my "real-life" friends. I think.

i'm the same way. for now i'm using it for my 'internet friends' not my real friends that i actually hang out with. just the ones i've been talking to for years and never met. i'm sure i'll have business buddies in there too once i get a new job (only have 1 buddy at my current job)

It fills a very small void, that didn't really need to be filled, but now that it is filled, it's an 'eh, why not' type of thing.
It certainly doesn't hurt that their are some famous faces behind it :/

From what I can tell, Pownce is a solution looking for a problem. Leah had been messing with some code, Kevin had a vague idea, and they put the two together.
But it really doesn't do anything innovative (it's Twitter with groups and file attachments). But the people that want that kind of service already use Twitter.
I can see lots of people signing up to try to be Kevin's friend or simply because they've heard of the people behind it. But I imagine a large percentage of those people will just drift away after a few weeks.
But good luck to them. If you're in a position where people will jump on board any new project you announce, you should definitely make the most of that.

I hate Twitter. I used Pownce to liveblog what went down at E3 for a friend who couldn't watch. When pownce goes mobile it will 1up Twitter, but we'll have to wait for the Twitter update that is rumoured.

I have no idea what Pownce does yet. I'm generally using my Linux partition, though I need to boot in on my Windows partition today.
If anyone wants and invite PM me.
Okay.... so it seems like a strange kind of communications software, but from the heuristic perspective, file should separate out into images/audio/video. If that were the case, it would be like the Facebook of file sharing.

I hate Twitter too.
Personally, I only use Pownce for sharing early releases of Diggnation.

Robert Heron is one of the most irritating individuals I have ever known about. He seems genuinely bitter and scathing but it's in a way that is so painfully...geeky... I love Patrick Norton, but I can't stomach DLTV because of that Heron fellow...

Robert Heron is only cranky or bitter when necessary and i would say the same thing at almost all instances of bitterness on DL.TV.

I must concur that although pownce is nice, it doesn't really do anything better that any other app does not already do. Now if it was a phone app then that would help its user base. So far the only use I've found for it is with my RPG group and getting them files relatively easily.

Agreed. That's cool though that you use it for file distribution. My RPG group have a server with SVN housing all our documents, which is even easier than trying to distribute manually.

He looks just like Dwight Schrute. http://offbe.at/blogs/sample_weblog/archive/2007/05/18/is-dl-tv-s-robert-heron-dwight-schrute-s-long-lost-twin.aspx

Yeah, but so far, at least as far as we know, Heron hasn't tried to take over techtv, DL.TV, TWIT, or anything else he has been associated with. And on the Pownce note, I like it (something doesn't necessarily have to be new or revolutionary to catch market share, it just has to be appealing).
