This week: E3 blowout, with discussion of the Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony press conferences. Plus, a review of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and a remake of Footloose? It's the Totally Rad Show Episode 17: "Tandiego" the one in which Dan lets the kids dance, Alex should work in marketing, Jeff chooses a future wife, and we all visit the ice cream man!

Danny! Read the books! Half Blood Prince is the book you need to read to really get the "heart" thing you're looking for in HP.

Great, i'll have to wait till next week on this. I've been given a homework assignment by my girlfriend to watch all the Harry Potter movies before this sunday. I've got two down and two left...

Not bad movies. I liked the 2nd one better than the first though.

Great show. I say Dan should wait until September to get a PS3. If, by a miracle, the PS3 60GB sells out, there's a rumor that the 80GB will drop to the $499 price tag, though I don't think Motorstorm will come with it then. Plus, in September, Heavenly Sword comes out which seems to be perfect for those wanting some good 3rd person action.

I LOVED Order of the Phoenix! I totally agree that it was my least favorite book but my favorite movie.

I watched Footloose and really hated it. I don't really see how Footloose is on par with Magnolia and Babel.

I wish they had ice cream trucks in my area. Last time I saw one of those was in Seattle when I was 3rd grade.

I got to say, I totally disagreed with the Harry Potter bit. Jeff is right, the fifth book was the worst, and Alex too was right that the third book was the worst. However, this film just sucked. The screenplay was written as a bland, teenagers soap opera, and the direction was downright awful. It took away the magic feel, and felt like a bad teenage show. Even the main characters weren't that good in it. The fourth film was so dark and wonderfully directed, and the Death Eaters were great (the Death Eater's costumes in the fifth film, LAME!). Sorry for the rant, just really didn't like the film.

Good episode! See you guys in San Diego.

Alex, bro, you totally got it right. That was one of the first games that truly had me engaged, got to my senses, etc. It was fun, challenging, intense at times, frustrating.....and probably graphically for the time one of the most beautiful games.

The latest game that totally got me, we just finished it, is Ninja Gaiden Sigma, pick it up and go over to Jeff's house and take over his PS3. That game SMOKES!!!!

Suggestion for everyone going to see Harry Potter: Go see it in IMAX!

IMAX Theaters are, as far as I know, only in major cities (and even then, I do believe you might have trouble finding one.) Basically, its a huge screen, very high quality, and amazing sound. It's really the only way I really enjoy going to a theater anymore. Also, they start every IMAX showing with a laser show, so even if you are watching a stinker, at least you got a nice lightshow.

But the real reason to watch HP in IMAX is that the last 30 minutes of the movie is in 3D! Not the crapfest red/blue cardboard glasses kind like yesteryear, they've really made some advances in the technology, and it actually pulls off the gimmick stunningly. People who have seen the movie know that the final battle is epic, but its doubly epic when you see it all coming towards you. There are only about 250 IMAX theaters in the world, so if you have one near you, take advantage of it!

Also, loved the show. I really think this is a return to form, as I've had some minor gripes with the last couple.

Wikipedia entry for IMAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX)... has technical specs and et cetera for those so inclined.

Great show today TRS crew! Your enthusiasm is really rubbing off on me. When you talk about the games and show the screens and videos in the back, it gets me excited as well, even though I only own an old Xbox console.

Just saw Transformers yesterday too, and I agree with you guys that it felt like a kids movie with awesome actions scenes and corny dialog. If I was 10 it would have probably been the greatest movie I had ever seen.

I keep saying it, but it bears repeating: I can't wait for next week. There's nothing like sitting down on a rainy wednesday with a cold beer and a fresh episode of TRS!

Keep it up!

Whoa, it appears I got to represent my book.

**(Possible Spoiler warnings)**

OoTP is my favorite of the of the series so far just because of it's dark tone, Harry's overall angry attitude, and the relationship between him and Sirius. In the movie, I felt nothing at the end. It was like, oh well, Sirius is gone. I mean, over half the book dealt with that conflict of Harry and how he felt about his godfather.

With that said though, I did recently re-read the book to coincide with the release of the movie, but more importantly the release of book 7. Perhaps Jeff was right about reading the book so close to release, because all I could see is what it left out (and it was a lot). Maybe I'll give it a second viewing. :)

Final rant: MICHAEL GAMBON is not a good DUMBLEDORE! He plays him horribly (the stereotypical wizard with powers). He has mentioned that he hasn't read the books and never will and you can tell. I was more of a Richard Harris fan (RIP).

Loved the E3 chat. So I have to type a bunch of bullshit...

CoD4 looks amazing--but I'm not sure it belongs in the Microsoft discussion--since it's multiplatform and supposedly indistinguishable on PS3.

I agree with Jeff on Mass Effect. Definitely my most anticipated game of the year. It looks to be the definition of epic. And Assassin's Creed is looking pretty janky for a game that's launching so soon.

It's not looking good for Halo 3 online co-op:
In the latest issues of EGM, it's reported that online co-op isn't happening, yet. "We're not dumb," says Bungie's Frank O'Conner. "We know that people want it and we're trying to make it happen. I think the biggest problem for us for online co-op is that we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player. That's a significant challenge. And there's lots of design things you could do to prevent that from happening, but they would make it not feel like Halo anymore. If we can make it happen in a way that works well, we will - and if it works badly, we won't."

I totally criticized Alex on his Wii comments and, after E3, Wii is dead to me. FU Nintendo.

Little Big Planet > all though. I can't wait to see the demo late this year.

I have to disagree about Harry Potter. The Order of the Phoenix was my least favorite book, but the things I did like about it were cut from the film. I'm not a huge HP fan, but what I do like about the books and the earlier movies were the characters other than Harry. The movies part 3 and beyond are all about Harry. I don't think it was a bad movie, it just wasn't my taste.

E3: I'm a total Nintendo fanboy, but I have to agree the conference was boring. I think Mario Galaxy and Metroid will be amazing, but I'm not that interested in the peripherals they showed. Sony had an impressive show, but not enough to make me fork over a paycheck just to get a system. Xbox was pretty meh too. I'll buy the system for RE5 and GTA4, but I'm not dieing to have one right now.

Alex, thanks for mentioning Eye of the Beholder...also my fav computer RPG...I remember buying pieces of computers and finally watching a bud assemble it so I could play that game...classic. Even with crappy graphics it was fun (for the time it was impressive...most impressive)

Dan, give the Harry Potter audio books a try because (Jim Dale) does all the voices (very well) so you get the benefit of the full story with a good performance (only voice but still an awesome performance). I like the audio books better than the movies...although, Phoenix was amazing. Order was actually my favorite of the audiobooks becuase Harry finally said "Enough of this bullshit!" I'm listening to Half Blood Prince again to prep for the newest book because I think I might purchase it...havn't bought one (a HP book) yet, but for some reason I don't want to hear about who bites it...I'd rather read it and experience it on my own.

Jeff, what did you put in Dan's drink to get him all riled up for a PS3? When I saw Jeff as giddy as he was when Dan mentioned that, this is what popped into my head:

-----

Jeff, sitting in a hooded sweatshirt, leans back in his recliner while looking out the big picture window admiring a star-filled sky.

Alex is standing quietly next to Jeff's chair, arms crossed until he feels the need to reach up and pull at his hair...or to smooth out the goattee that isn't there anymore.

Dan is standing a few steps away, next to the window, also looking at the night sky. He turns and eyes the PS3 sitting on the table next to Jeff's chair.

Jeff smiles and pats the PS3. "You . . . want . . . this . . . don't . . . you?"

Dan begins to nod. "Dude," he mutters before turning back towards the window.

Alex shakes his head. "Don't do it man."

Dan turns back towards Jeff's chair, glancing from Jeff to the PS3.

Jeff steeples his fingers. "Give in . . . don't listen to Alex's hate . . . join me . . . and your journey towards My Side will be complete!"

Alex shakes his head again while shrugging. "Dude, they don't have any friggin games for it!"

Dan clenches his fists and turns slowly towards the window. Suddenly he spins and leans in to grab the PS3.

Alex clenches his teeth while lunging forward and also grabs the PS3.

The PS3 lifts in front of Jeff's face as the two struggle for it...and Jeff begins to laugh . . . his evil chuckle echoes around them.

I just got done playing through the game for maybe my 4th time through. I remember playing through the first time, and it was the first game where I felt I had complete freedom. But anyways, about the Wii......man i didnt spend $5k on my PC to play console games(all the time), i got my Wii so that i could be an idiot with my mates and even after the E3 stuff, its still just as fun. Nintendo was never about HardCore, It was about Fun.

Mind you ive already decided im trading my PS2 in for a PS3 (just waiting on my TAX Return). Weather or not i get an X360 will depend on weather they entice me enough (i love having money).

Finally caught the HP film... definitely felt very British. The magic fight at the end was quite impressive, Alex was spot on re magic casters, as a whole the adult magic users have an order of magnitude less cheese factor than the students. One thing that always struck me as odd in the series is the insanely large gap between what Hogwarts teaches, magically, and adult capability; which really mirrors my other concern, that Harry doesn't actually seem to be doing any personal growth throughout most of the series. He seems largely to have to be taught the same things over and over again, throwing the same tantrums and having the same crises. Unfortunately, that seems to carry over into the acted part, with many of Harry's reactions seemingly identical regardless of situ; whereas Ron and to a lesser extent Hermione seem to be more actively developing characters, especially in this last film.

The D.A. was pretty solid, though I thought the Ministry was a bit bleak. I pictured something about more ornate. Baroque even. The supporting adult cast (minus Dumbledore, perhaps, who I didn't think was bad per se, but didn't stand out) were quite impressive as mentioned on the show. I thought the exterior of Grimwald was a bit generic too, seemed a bit over-modern any-city, and could have done without the dramatic "magic reveal". The Thames flyover was a bit gratuitous as well.

Guys thanks for another great episode.

I really enjoy the whole show from the inventive cut scene at the start (I really think it really is the universe of your production)

but these are sadly the word of a fool

I so want to contribute to your show, I think that you really have it nailed atm as to how the show should be etc.

I so like the content, I so like the conversation/bickering, between youselves and I love seeing you guys getting amped up over your differences of opinion and agreement of ( and I wish developers we're of a standard to have you all cage fighting over your opinions hahaha) but I would not want you fighting over nothing (if that makes sense) you guys do what you feel first and that's what makes the show (or that you are able to transpire the feeling and are and are great actors) '
nevertheless you make me grin stupidly whilst watching.
Your fearless in your approach to development are as a team is just friggin awesome and kudos to you more of it

Affirmative!

I also love FotC so much that it's only episode 5 and I've probably watched each at least 10 times...the music is infectious and the band is so clever and quirky in the most wonderful way (not to mention hot...I think I want to move to NZ now). Top Chef, Unwrapped...you guys have good taste in television. Perhaps all of that could have been discussed more in the actual Television segment (maybe later).

Even though I'm not a game I always love the video game segment and my interest is piqued in Echochrome.

The ice cream truck! It's all about either the Toasted Almond, Chocolate Eclair or Strawberry Shortcake (depending on the mood). I've never in my life ordered a popciscle from the truck, only creamy goodness.

We have 2 in Tampa.

The sound is definitely the best I've heard in any theater. Yes, the screen is huge, but unless you sit mid to back, it's way too big and there's curvature distortion if you end up having to sit close. There is no laser light show at either of our IMAX's. Must be special to your town.

But the real reason to watch HP in IMAX is that the last 30 minutes of the movie is in 3D!

Again, your IMAX must be uber special b/c this doesn't happen at ours. And honestly, I wouldn't want to see it all tricked out in 3d. Is the picture all blurry for the last 30 minutes to those who just want to see the movie as intended w/o glasses? I would find that highly annoying.

One of the two in New Orleans does; I'm not sure about the theatre at the aquarium/Entergy. The 3-d movies do require an investment by the theater in the shutter goggles and whatever they use to sync them.

That said, I really miss the OmniMAX in Boston; it's what i grew up with and the curved dome IMAX theaters are much more immersive in my experience than the regular "large flat screen" you get at a regular IMAX theater.

Maybe you'd care to share the highpoints of the Nintendo conference or some other highlights about upcoming Wii info. I watched it all and I think the boys nailed it on the head. I was still thinking about getting a Wii and this pretty much tanked that idea. Snoozeville.

I've had a 360 since launch and I couldn't be more excited for what the next 6 months are going to bring. I was also on the fence for a PS3, but I think I've been swayed to the dark side for this one.

I nearly fell out of my damn chair when Dan dropped that one.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is the cult movie of all cult movies. I don't care what movie anyone else pulls out of their ass.

Dude, when he said that, my eyebrows won't so far up, they receded my hair. My balance on the chair had maintained, but when the graphic came up to match what he was saying - my chair did slip out from under me.

I remember seeing it in a bar (The Ram) during GenCon Indy last year. They played through a projector onto a screen behind the bar and, even though you could barely hear the dialogue over the background din, everyone knew all the best parts. A great way to watch a great film. I don't think Kurt Russel has done anything since that comes close.

I assume you're talking about 'Thunder'.

You might remember, when Jack Burton jumped on his back Thunder expanded himself and threw him off.

Later when he sees his master dead he's so enraged and ditraught that he starts to expand again. Then Wang Chi says "I don't think he's gonna stop!".

Then BOOM!!

I'm sitting at my laptop at a train station watching this weeks episode. I looked down and realized I was wearing my TRS T-shirt. Then I checked my myspace and saw that my profile pic was me in my TRS T-shirt (post Amish cow milking). Granted, I only brought two T-shirts with me on my trip and I may be a pathetic fanboy, but that doesn't mean you guys are freakin' rad!

You guys are doing a great job, see you in SD.

Great episode. Loved the e3 coverage. I'm looking forward to Comic Con coverage, but sometime after that, I'm really hoping you guys talk more about Rock Band (Harmonix). Didn't Jeff actually play some Guitar Hero 3? I remember him dropping that bomb in a previous show, but never heard any details afterwards. Can't he use the same secret passageway or fake credentials to get some hands on action for Rock Band?

He signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement, i think) so it's illegal for him to say more than he played it and it was fun.

I am DYING to get my hands on Rock Band. I played through the career mode of GH3 and really enjoyed it. I don't believe the entire track list has been revealed yet, so I can't really talk about it, but it was great. However, given the choice at this point I think I'd go for RB (oh, who am I kidding? I'm going to get both).

I don't think I've ever known anyone that's actually played Ultima VII, but I agree with Jeff... probably the best game ever. I clocked such a ridiculous number of hours playing that on our old 486. And the expansions and addons for Ultima VII were all equally as good. I remember it as the first RPG with true openness and the ability to do whatever the hell you wanted (i.e. kill an entire village and steal their houses)...

ULTIMA FTW

Hey anyone know if the Footloose musical movie is going to be based on the 1998 broadway play or new material?

BTW zac efron, WAS in high school the musical, but more recently he was in Hairspray which was wonderful fun.
