Awesome episode of the TRS this week - lots of video game news, which was music to my ears and... er.... video(?) to my eyes.
Anyway, on the subject of co-op games AND the forum question of RPGs I immediately thought of Secret of Mana for the SNES. Not only was this one of the most amazing games ever, including a fabulous soundtrack, but it allows for simultaneous 3 player co-op (in a 4 swords kind of way). It has a real time combat system and each character has their own magic abilities that means you really need a great amount of co-ordination and team work to get through the game - very satifying. Another thing that was good about this was that the adittional players were completely optional - they could drop in and out at any time and the game would carry on. Much like in the Lego Star Wars games that came out recently - which are also awesome.
It's actually one of my best gaming memories growing up - me and my older sister played through it several times together and loved every minute of it. We were even geeky enough to call the characters Luke, Leia and Han on one of our play-throughs. It was also one of the few games where I wasn't in fear of a SNES controller being aimed at my head for my cocky attitude when winning - Street Fighter II, Killer Instinct and many others were often painful victories. I actually played through the whole of SoM more recently with my younger sister, who got a bit left out of the gaming back in the day because she's substantially younger, and still enjoyed it hugely. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good co-op game.
What other co-op games do people like from this or (even better) from previous generations? From an early age (as my little trip down memory lane shows) games have been about playing with others around - hence my love for the N64 (4-player by default - Mario Kart and Goldeneye FTW) and things like SingStar - so any ideas on things to try out with my siblings and friends around would be great.
