I really would like to start reading comics, but I don't know where to begin. Every time I ask 'fanboy' friends of mine, they always dodge the question by stating that it depends on my tastes. I realize that this may be true, but somebody's got to have a suggestion of something that they support enough to recommend without abandon. Please help.

As a note, I'm willing to read large comic novels (not sure the official title), but I'd prefer to read something that is a monthly series, like the classic comics always were.

Thanks in advance.

Go read Preacher. Pick up volume 1 and if you like continue. I feel for a someone come into DC or Marvel right now it would be such a big mess. Everything is tying into each other and there is so much backstory going on... it's kinda stupid.

Check out invincible by kirkman too.

Actually, forget both of those. Pick up The Walking Dead by Kirkman, best comic I've read in a long time.

Go pick up Ex Machina volume 1 by Brian K Vaughan, you'll love it.

I've got to agree with Farco, Walking Dead is a great title to start with.

Personally, I was never that big into comics either until the past year or so. The books that brought me in were Powers, Fables, and Walking Dead. If you prefer "super hero" comics, try House of M (anything Brian Michael Bendis writes is genius).

Ultimate Spiderman - this book best captures that classic comic book feeling most people strive for.

Runaways is a fun comic to pickup as a first timer. Its about a bunch of kids who discover their parents are supervillains.

Here (http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=comics+denver+co&btnG=Google+Search) just go pick some stuff out. it really is impossible to give advice when the only thing people have to go on is you want a monthly title. so far all people have done is recommend stuff they like. rather it is good or bad it might not be for you. so just go to a local shop and browse, buy an issue or two, it's not like comics cost alot. just have funny.

I'm not huge into comics, but if you want something that will melt your eyes off with the art, get Kingdom Come. It's insanehow good everything looks.

I personally started with Watchmen four years ago. I don't recommend anything as drama-orientated as it though, especially if you are looking for the superhero-esque stereotype. Preacher totally blew my mind soon after but it all depends on taste, and if you can handle it. Then I dabbled in the world of Alan Moore with V for Vendetta and Swampthing etc.

I would suggest to start by collecting a few of each style of comics as a sort of taste test. From Marvel I would recommend the current saga, World War Hulk. Or even a little earlier as a prologue to current event, the Marvel Civil War. I couldn't recommend anything for DC, as nothing particularly interests me there. Perhaps someone a little more DC attuned could suggest a few things.
