Have any of you guys seen the BBC documentary Planet Earth? This thing is amazing. It's shot unbelievably well, and captures some crazy shiz I had no idea existed out there. It's available on Blu-Ray, so I would recommend anyone with a PS3 out there--probably just you Jeff :-) --to check it out. And if you think nature documentaries are boring, believe me, this will blow your mind.

True, I guess I should've hijacked a thread about how Planet Earth was disappointing. I'll keep this in mind next time :-)

Nevertheless, posters gave their thoughts in that topic, they were not just discussing their disappointment (If they even were disappointed).

I'll synopes the thread for you:
The only reason I was even disapointed was due the fact that it was narrated by Sigourney Weaver and not Sir David Attenborough. As a fan of Blue Planet, Life of Mammals and other works of his I felt like the narration drug the whole show down. Then I got pwned by Dan who informed that that I was an idiot for dissing Ripley (touche' my friend), then I was told I could get the entire series on DVD or HD with the original British version narrated by Attenborough. I bought the HD version and LOVE (I repeat) LOVE the show now. Having that voice makes the show SOO much more engaging. Attenborough has a way of sounding like a wise grandfather taking you out on a walk thru the forest, describing with almost childlike wonder the incredible feats of nature taking place all around you.
(if you enjoyed Planet Earth, you should try the other works I listed by him, they are brilliant!)

My favourite moment from the series was in the Ocean Deeps episode where he talks about the "Vampire Squid... from hell". He made it sound almost like he was adding the 'from hell' as a joke, even though it is part of the scientific name.
I do miss actually seeing David in the docos, however. It's kinda like watching your grandfather make a home movie about some far-flung corner of the world.

I don't remember the VSFH part, I'll have to go back and find it! Some of the shots they get are ridiculous. Does anyone know how they got footage from INSIDE a freaking pitcher plant?! It's like they cut out a square and put in a window so they could get that footage--either that or it's fake (I sure hope not).

i just can't get in to nature doc. i think it saids something about us as a people that we would rather watch nature on tv rather than going outside and being in nature ourselves. it saids something, i just don't know what.

Or just let YouTube get it for you...

The VSFH is about three quarters of the way though the clip.

Some of us aren't affluent enough to take a trip to see Asiatic Russia, the Indonesian reefs, or New Guinea. If I forfeited being outside to see a nature documentary of rural Missouri, that would be sad for many reasons (not the least of which is my living smack dab in the middle of it).
Also, it's sad that we would rather communicate with random people on a computer network than going [sic] outside and being around people ourselves.

It's also available on HD-DVD disc. The photography is awesome, no matter how you feel about nature docs. The pacing is kinda slow though. It put me to sleep in several places.

i'm just not impress with that stuff. maybe growing up near an imax that only played that type of stuff has ruined me.

Ironically, this discussion prompted me to watch an episode this afternoon, and about halfway through I fell asleep. I blame it on the 4.5 hours of sleep I got last night though, not the documentary :-)

Well Different strokes and all the shit...
I was just commenting on the great photography. They had film clips on thing I had never seen before. However, it wasn't enough to keep me conscience. But then again, it was my summer break and I needed the relaxation.

Whats wrong with Sigourney? The way I figure, the Planet Earth documentary was an entry into the Hitchhiker's Guide (the fictional one). Who better to relate our planet to extraterrestrials than someone who's been to space? (As well as killed god knows how many of those extra-terrestrials...)

I know, I know, I want to agree with you, but compared to David Attenborough her narration sounded canned, dry, listless and lacking any emphasis or emotion. I love my HD copy with Attenborough's narration it makes the show almost a completely different show!
