hi
I was watching the new trs and you talked a bit about Echo Chrome and it reminded me of Portal, Portal is one of the games the valve is bringing out later this/next year

Portal Demonstration:

If I have to see one more portal thread, I'm going to flip... into a portal.

Anyone who pays attention to anything Valve does knows about Portal. What I'm wondering is, in the new GDC video, the guy shoots it at one of the walls and it just dissipates. I thought that the whole point was you could shoot them anywhere.

The GDC version of Portal only contained the training sections, in which you can't place portals anywhere cause it's trying to force you to learn some portalling technique, like "flinging" using moment through portals.

Ah. I suppose I should've had my sound on, then. Thank you.

Portal RULES!!!! it's a short game, but what a great great game. I loved the puzzles, I loved the back story, I loved how they tied in Black Mesa.
I want a t-shirt that says Cake is a lie!

I don't know if anyone has seen The Cube series of movies, but near the end it totally reminded me of it. Awesome game, loved the story and humor.

yes, the humor was amazing. I'm really hoping that HL revisits black mesa and she's there waiting for Freeman.

The song during the end credits was just too epic for words.

I wonder if the Portal facility is actually the Borealis. Basically, if I don't get that gun in Episode 3 I'm gonna be pissed.

i loved this game. so funny and disturbing at the same time. the level with the companion cube was hilarious.

i saw a pretty funny YTMND with the final song and screenshots, really funny.
Spoiler Alert if you haven't finished the game:

i also read somewhere that Gabe Newell said they will sell weighted companion cubes plush toys on the valve store by christmas time.

Argh, I'm trying to play it on my laptop while at work, but Steam won't connect to the internet here so no Steam. :( Oh well, I'll have to wait until I get home.

I agree with most of the comments here about this game. Hilarious, smart, and most importantly, FUN! The end game song is indeed truly "epic". I'm actually quite jealous of the wit and the tune in general.

I hope we see a continuation of this game in some form in the near future.

HL2 : Ep2 was fantastic as well.

Oh man the Orange Box was worth it for this game alone. I spent a lot of time just playing around in it even. I hope they make a sequel to it.

Yep way to be an asshole, then again, you shouldn't be reading threads about a game if you haven't beat it to avoid situations like that.

The ending is better then just a picture, trust me, make sure to listen very careful through the game, the computer voice says a lot of hilarious stuff that a lot of people miss.

I have no idea how that picture could spoil anything, in fact there are a ton of screen shots that I could of posted that would of spoiled it, this tells you nothing about the game at all.

Oh man, beat it last night and just gotta say that the humor of this game is awesome. I will always have a place in my heart for the companion cube (even though I cheated on it with another cube near the end).

If any of you are contemplating purchasing the Orange Box, this would be reason enough in itself. It's humor and well thought-out plot line and back story definitely make it one of the best games of the year IMHO. I've gone through the game twice already and there's still more to play with (advanced levels and time attack modes). I found being able to play through the game with the commentary on way more engaging than just getting a straight playback of all the sound bits.

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here:
HUGE SUCCESS

I loved the bit near the end when she said that you should go to the party and that she thought the companion cube would be coming.

Are we all in agreement that we needs a few shirts?

1) An Aperture Science t-shirt/polo.
2) a shirt that says "I <3 my weighted companion cube"
3) of course a shirt that says "The cake is a lie." with a picture of the cake on it.

Also, has anyone made the Aperture Science cake yet?

satori
10-16-2007, 08:11 AM
I want the shirt, yes! the one that Valve is selling isn't all that interesting.

...also, what do people think this site does? I can't figure it out

ahh.... wiki has some facts on this:
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/User:AndrewNeo/Analyzing_ApertureScience.com
I also recall finding a login in a hidden area that I'm going to try that might give different results... or the same, I'm not sure... still, it is fun finding some easter egg stuff.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing a login and password scribbled on a wall somewhere but didn't have a pen and paper on hand to jot it down so I had to convince myself that it wasn't important :p Let us know if that results in anything different on the aperture science site.

Also, when they give you that "unique" 64 character ID for the test, I started to write it down and only realized half way through that the numbers and letters change every time it blinks on the screen.. damn you valve!

Found this in the wiki link satori provided:

Alternate Login ID

After playing through the game once. I found in the game a spot that you can wedge your way into; and after some snooping through the wall writing I found this:

Login: cjohnson

Password: tier3

By doing this and then entering the command "DIR" and or typing "NOTES" you can access a funny history of ApertureScience

satori
10-16-2007, 07:04 PM
funny you should mention that, I actually took a screen shot of it while I was playing it thinking maybe I could login:
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m231/satori3000/login.jpg

as an aside, did anyone notice the multiple mentioning of Cake ingredients in the streaming text?
I have screen shots of that too, but I'll leave that alone.

So I was bored and wanted cake. Here is my attempt at the Aperture Science Celebration Cake. It was 3 layers but 2 of the layers refused to cooperate so I had to whittle it down to one. Sad, but is still good!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2320/1594877760_57962a324e.jpg?v=0

I took a bit of freedom with it, most notable replacing that (what appear to be) cherries with strawberries. Sorry, I like them more than cherries.

Question for those who beat the game:

Did anyone else use a chair to get into the air duct? You know, in the area just after the rocket turret?

I did that and apparently so did alot of the guys on the other message board I visit.

But I was playing through again with the commentary on and found out that you were supposed to blow up the tube to get a cube.

satori

I wasn't entirely happy buying the Orange Box until I played this game...

I used the cube, I didn't think there was another way. I don't know, it just clicked in my head. That's the cube that I ended up taking with me for the rest of the game. It was more of a companion than that other one. then it got vaporized when I entered that barrier to the boss. :(

@DarthEnder: Haha, that's awesome, especially the Mario one. I thought about how awesome it would be to have a portal gun. I could go from end to end of a Costco store within seconds!

The thought of using the tube never even once passed through my mind. I guess too much Half life 2 and using boxes and what not to jump up on things made me think that way. I ran back and picked up two chairs the second i couldn't make the first jump into the vent.

I just assumed thats why they left so much crap in the room before, so you could stack it.

It took me a couple minutes to figure it out but I ended up using the rocket to break the tube, and then use the cube. I didn't think of using the chair or anything in the office.

You guys do know that after you beat it, and you get the menu screen as a cake. If you let it sit idle for a few min, it will pan to the right and there is a suprise sitting next to you....try it out :) Nobody spoil it!
