View Full Version : Oh current gen gaming...

So, let me explain my gaming history.

I grew up on a Sega Genesis (Shining Force 2 is the shit) and an NES. My household progressed to a PlayStation, then a PS2 and a Game Cube.

I have two brothers. Over the past year, one brother bought a Wii, which was awesome, still is awesome. The other brother bought a 360 which I'm less than thrilled with.

Over the years, I've grown to be the kid that buys the top notch games and that's just about it. I'll give original games a try every once in a while, but, as I look through my PS2 collection, I see Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and a series named Suikoden that I hope most of you know (I still really need suikoden II if anyone can help me out). Not so much of a fan of first person shooters which is mainly the reason the 360 hasn't attracted me. Not big into sports or anything either.

Anyways, so, my point is, I need a new system. I rode into this generation really wanting a PS3 but Sony's E3 presence and press conference last year kicked me out of their fan base. (Not to mention I didn't have a spare $600).

I'm now between a Wii and a PS3. I'll tell you right now, I really want a PS3, mainly just for MGS4, but I also want a Wii because of Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3.

Either way, I'll need to save up money for a while, so I'd end up being forced to buy the 80 GB PS3 instead of the 60 if I ended up being swayed this way.

I need your help. Ask me questions or whatever and try to sway me to one side.

Overall, I'm very close to saying screw it and just waiting another year or maybe even two, but, if any of your charmers out there can help it, I could be walking home with a shiny new PS3 or Wii.

Considering MGS4 will be on the 360, I vote you go with Microsoft.

jondy1703, first off the PS3 is now $499 instead of $599. I would suggest you start saving. Because you have around 9 months until MGS4 comes out. FFXIII will also be a PS3 exclusive as well. And most other games will be coming to the PS3 so you'll be set. The PS3 is worth the money.

What part of exclusive do you not understand? Kojima himself said it's PS3 only. His production studio did the game and he owns the IP. If you need more reasons then how about the game needing to be put on a duel layer blu-ray due to size. The game was also written for the PS3 hardware as in it uses all 7 cells, the RSX, the PS3's memory type, the PS3 hard drive, the constant speed/transfer rate of the 2x blu-ray drive. The game would have to be completely rewritten for the 360. Combine that with the lack of sales of the previous MGS ports thus giving no monetary reason to port it. Especially when most 360 fans won't even buy it, they just want Sony to loose another exclusive.

I know it's been said that it's an "exclusive" title, but come on. Think logically. There have been SO many other games that have started out, even announced and developed as "exclusive" that ended up on multiple platforms. Even RECENTLY, Virtua Fighter 5 was announced for multiplatform. And Assassin's Creed was announced early on as a PS3 exclusive, then it moved to multiplatform with the 360, and now it's looking like an exclusive for the 360. Things can change.

December 16, 2005 - In a recent interview with Hideo Kojima, the master of all things Metal Gear Solid explained that creating Metal Gear Solid 4 is technically possible on Xbox 360.

Kojima said with the exception of nuances or small details, the power of next generation hardware (and the PC) no longer provides the technical restrictions they did before...Other Konami teams, he said, were able to get their hands on the Xbox 360 tools before him. It's his philosophy that he wants to be first, not second on the early development for a system, which is why he chose PS3.

The reason I'm putting so much effort into being right about this one detail is because he's trying to decide where upwards of 500 dollars of his hard-earned money is going to be invested BASED on one very small factoid in a sea of information and I'll be damned if I'm going to let someone make a decision when I have the opportunity to help them make the right decision. Now, Dark has said that their not too thrilled with the 360, and that's fine. I'm not going to defend it. It's not my job.

Jondy, right now, it's looking like you should lean towards a Wii and let the price sink on the PS3 a little more. If you don't have a high-def TV, it wouldn't be worth it right now to purchase a PS3 simply because MGS4 isn't out yet and in the meantime, you'll really only have a very inexpensive blu-ray player that you're not even taking advantage of on an SDTV. There are a few games worth playing but nothing that can't wait until you get a PS3...eventually.

I, myself, do have a 360 and I've been completely happy with it. I've had the same three games rotating through it for quite a while now. (DoA4, Rockstar's Table Tennis and Gears of War) along with all the online titles I've been trying out. If the rumors and speculation turns out to be true and MGS4 does end up being ported to the 360, I would consider Microsoft as an option.

One question, though. Do you have online capabilities or are you going to be playing solo/split-screen stuff?

360's not really in question here. Not only does my brother already have one, but I'm not going to buy a system for one game. After watching the latest TRS today, the PS3 games they talked about looked pretty damn cool.

I'm not too big on multiplayer. I played SOCOM a bit and Metal Gear Online but that's about it. I have online capabilities, but I'm looking for a reason to use them that doesn't involve first person shooting. I ended up selling SOCOM anyways.

DoA4

Now there's a quality game! /sarcasm ;)

So what are these "worth while" PS3 games you speak of? I own a PS3 and I'm seriously asking?

Sorry to hijack your thread jondy. I can't really suggest a system for you expect get what suits your needs. Wii = cheap/decent games already available. PS3 = expensive but great games to come/risky "investment" for future great games.

I'm speaking of Metal Gear Solid 4, Echochrome, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Ratchet & Clank, Infamous (oh man this looks amazing) and (maybe) SOCOM: Confrontation.

Plus I'd like to play the multi-platform games that I wouldn't play on a 360 or PC because my PC isn't "gaming" grade and I'd have to play around my brother with his 360. Games like Star Wars: Force Unleashed, Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, Assassin's Creed, and I may even end up buying the HL2 Orange Box because Team Fortress Classic was the only FPS game that I really really got in to.

FYI, exclusive means released first on the platform sometimes, doesnt always mean platform specific. I cant imagine that any serious game Dev is gonna block out the HUGE market that is the xbox for the tiny market that is the ps3. There is a lot of room to grow on the ps3 which can equate to sales, but it just seems like a dumb idea to me. They would loose money and those guys are all about money.

But to answer the OP's question. If find the Wii has strength in group gaming. So unless you have a lot of friends to come over and play with, i would go with the ps3. Get a Wii later, its gonna be a few more months before that system really takes off anyway. I mean its selling good now, but the games havent truly arrived yet.

If you're taking this to the level of a popularity contest people are going to say Nintendo, it's obvious. You list more Nintendo games than anything, so where is the decision? If you want a Nintendo, go get a Nintendo.

Well, these are my main problems holding me back from buying either one:

PS3:
-Price
-Will the games deliver?
-Will the good games keep coming? (If the ones stated do deliver that is)

Wii:
-Will the hardcore gamers be catered to only once every couple of months?
-Will I be able to find one without waiting in lines before stores open, hunting around for when they will get their next shipment?

Not that I'm anywhere near a "hardcore gamer" but I'd rather be playing games like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3, not Wii Fit and such.
