The idea is that this show helps people get fit and motivated to stay fit. Lets face it, as geeks we spend a lot of time on the net. One thing we dont know as geeks is that you really feel better if you get out and move around more. Its not a myth. But getting used to it can be hell. so my idea is this.

A guy or guys or girl or guys and girls would have a weekly show that introduced yoga or tia chi or low impact aerobics, something that wont kill ya, but will get your heart rate up. Now the idea i have is that it starts out with a guy or whatever talking about quick health tips, breaking down what proteins are and carbs and getting geeky about the science of health. Then he/she breaks off into the exercise part of it, heckj it could even be Wii boxing or something. But this is where my idea is unique i think.

People dont do this stuff cause its boring, so while the guy is doing his thing, after about 5 min or less probably more like 2 min, the screen is over layed with game reviews or book reviews, caller submitted voice mails or e-mails or forum posts. All the time the guy in the back is doing the same stuff your doing, you just dont see him cause who the heck wants to look at some guy bouncing around, even if its a chic its boring. So this gives you something to rest your mind and eyes on, once a while his voice comes in and lets you know he is still doing it with you, cause he is, and says stuff like " i know your feeling tired, i am too and helps motivate you to keep going. But the main focus is on tech news and the things we like to geek out over.

so there ya go a 30 min podcast once a week that helps you stay healthy. Healthy body bring a healthy brain which can memorize better, think quicker and just is over all feeling better.

I been thinking of doing this myself since i put on some weight and thought it would be fun to document the change so people can see it work. I left some things out cause i dont like to type ! ;)

One that I think could actually work - a healthy lifestyle for geeks program. Excellant idea. I am trying to lose weight myself at the moment, and have started doing "step" exercises with my wife. That shit is killing me. Time to move the Xbox into the spare room, and hook up DDR again I think.

i thought it was a fun idea. I mean i think about all the things i have done in my life as a geek, im now 32 and some of those things have hurt me. My back could be better, my health could be better and all this from a former athlete type, so it weighs on me. But if you could have a way to tell people about posture and staying fit sooner then later, you could avoid crushed disks and pulled backs from not being taken care of, and do it in a fun and mentally addictive way. I always bring my ipod and watch diggnation when i go to the gym, so thats kinda the inspiration for this i guess. This way we can be happy old geeks when we get up there in age.

The cool thing about being geeks is we dont need to bulk up and kill ourselves, we just need to move a little and get that heart rate up. How hard is it to bounce around for 20 min or so while listening to tech news. If your mind is involved the time moves so much faster.

Clearly this is the answer...I want one. I want one.

Does it come in black? Cos, you know ... white things with rounded corners remind me a little too much of Apple products, and while I have nothing against jumping up an down on a Mac, it seems just a little sacriligious.

Even sadder, that was really all Nintendo announced at E3.

But after all...

I like the idea of a show that introduces you to different types of exercise, like Beginners Guides to running, or rock climbing, just general segments on how to get into stuff. And there could be other segments about improving your diet, how to stretch properly, etc.

I would definitely watch this.

I would love it. Currently the fitness podcasts out there are simply not very good. What would also be nice is to include some nice music that is motivational in the background that fits the exercise and maybe at the end where to buy it. I use different music for doing yoga, running and kickboxing, so tying that in would be great. I have yet to find the perfect long run mix.

You could have so much fun making a podcast like this, the possibilities are endless. Great idea!

i had this thought ~ i have the food thing down to an art form ~ my doctor asked for my grocery receipts (no kidding) to use with her other patients who have weight problems ~ i have done ballet and yoga but i do spend most of my time lying on my bed tapping on my laptop ~ so if someone brought movement down to its simplest most condensed format would be useful ~ sometimes i get up and do some ballet moves or yoga stretches but could be more

This could be good. Exercises that are kind of out of the box, things us geeks won't mind as much. I can't say I'm obese or anything, but all of my weight is fat wih no muscle, so it shows. So things that move at a good pace for geeks would be great. We all know we aren't going to head to the gym anytime soon.

Hmm yea, great idea, then maybe i won't feel so bad at the end of my gaming internet sessions lolz. Viva la ejercicio! That being said, Wii add had me dying of laughter, how lame can that thing get.

Thnx thats a great idea. Short segments on how to get into stuff, i like that idea. Im actually gonna try to do something with this, i just got a camera from a relative and im setting up a blog and site this weekend, did a initial video blog already too explaining how i feel before cause im out of shape right now and i thought it would be fun to start out of shape and people can watch me get better so they can see it works and you dont have to be super fit to do this stuff. Everyone on TV is always so good looking that you think you can never make it to where they are, but this will be kind of a journey that you can follow. At least im gonna try for that.

So maybe ill have a video blog, thats like a confessional, then segments on nutrition, news segments on gaming and tech and segments on how to do exercise like running and stuff, and by then i have the show.

Interesting thnx for the input. Maybe i should make a forum too and have people put in ideas, like they can chose the thing ill do that week, like running for 2 weeks, then swimming for 2 weeks or something to that effect. I would really like to make it organic and involve people so they are part of it.

So whats important is making it fast. Im not sure how i pulled that from your comment, but im thinking that it should be like a 30 min thing, walk or run or basket ball or surfing. The point is start short and easy.

Ok good the ideas are flowing, thnx guys, time to take this offline and to text pads now :)

Dude, royalties? :p

Hey, if you do this, you've got my viewership man.

You could also have people sending in things like before/after shots after you've had a show for a bit, or maybe sending in photos of them exercising it up.

this show idea is great. the problem is incorporating tech into it. Possibly, their could also be research dedicated to exercises on games. Like one episodes is Wii Sports, then Wii Fit, then DDR, and so on. Then, they could research on how using weights or modding an aspect of the game can end up with results. Like if using ankle and arm weights while playing wii sports builds muscle better then lifting weights alone. Also, their could be an episode on how to make really kick ass excel books for recording results and seeing your results through graphs and such. Their could also be user reactions and before and afters sent by viewers (cause now we can trust what we see and not have to think twice about paid actors on infomercials). I want to see this happen, it seems like a really good idea.

It's a great idea, as long as we establish whether this is a fitness show (with real fitness advice) or a technology show with fitness (Wii fit and other gimmicks) in the background. For real results, I would advocate the former.

This show idea seems like a great thing, just incorporating the Fitness aspect with the tech could get tricky if all you talk about is games and such...I'd definitely put some of the tech focus on proven exercise gadgets. (i.e. GPS for mapping out walking/running route, Nike + iPod, mp3 players that don't skip when you exercise, anything with flashing lights is always a winner, etc.) Stay away from the electro shock belt to better abs type thing. And have a section for simple tips to improve ones health while sitting at a desk. (i.e. Use a ball instead of a chair, drink water instead of the Dew, stand up and stretch once an hour, put down the smokes and pick up a granola bar, etc.)

I think with some planning this could turn into a great show. Good Luck. And post the links for your blog/video so we can all keep up with you.

I agree. There is so much out there tech-wise, from the new electronic BMI calculators and the cardio watches, to good websites to find out how many calories are in the burger you just ate and how long it would take to work off those calories doing different activites. Plus, almost every sport and activity has some aspect of tech tied into it anymore. Heck, running, probably the easiest sport to start has tons of tech to enhance it. Definitely focus on the fitness, the tech will always be there to enhance it.

I think the tech aspect should only be a small part of the show, like a weekly segment or whatever. One week it could be running gear, another, rock climbing gear... (how come when I'm thinking of examples those are the only two sports that spring to mind? :S) . And occasionally they could do those weirder gadgets, like that electric shock ab thing. Obviously they wouldn't be recommended, but that'd be a funny scene :p.

thnx for continued input guys. I just got a camera and am learning it and im trying to figure our how i wanna do the show. There is a few ways to go about it and im trying to etch how to approach it. For example im in talks with a local surfing leader around here and we are thinking of doing like a " geek learns to surf " thing where we go to the beach and he and I will go over how to surf for geeks. I used to surf but I'm so out of shape right now and I was never great at it anyway , that it'll be like learning all over again.

How to tie tech into it though is the question. Maybe I'll show the tech of wave prediction, the sites we use and tech to predict when waves come. I don't know yet, seems I need to find a easier way to sustain tech into it though. I can only explain so many things. Maybe I'll add in a segment that just covers big tech stuff, like pat leaving dl.tv or news on rev3. Still thinking I guess. Expect something soon though :)

I sure am enjoying getting nice and fat so everyone can see a transformation though lol. Im screwed if i dont do this, i think i put on 15-20 pounds. Never this large a belly ever :-x

The thing is, I don't think it has to involve tech. Not in every single aspect, at least. As long as it's about fitness for geeks, or people who don't get away from their computer much, you don't really need tech in it. Certainly if you're thinking "I want to do surfing, but how do I get tech into it?", don't try to wedge it in.

Don't worry too much about the tech, doesn't strike me as an important aspect of this idea.

I have been watching Diggnation and TRS from Day 1...also watch TSS on TechTV and followed the guys to G4. I love Revision3.

If you want to do one of your Geek Fitness shows in a pilates studio, I'm a pilates instructor and work at a great studio in the LA area where it'd be easy to shoot in....for free. I can attest to the number of computer animators that I work with from the game and film industry. In fact, used to be in production in games myself. Believe me I know how much geeks need pilates!

Also, to the Revision3 peeps, if any of you want to straighten your backs or tighten your bellies/backsides...lemme know!

:)

The best way to get into any exercise is to do it for some reason other than exercise. Sports are the trivial example, as people work out for sports not to work out but instead to advance their competitive ability.

This is why I think geek workouts like DDR, as inefficient as they are, work so great for people, because people don't play DDR for hours to get exercise, but instead to get better scores in the game, move up a difficulty level, etc.

Most joggers I know don't jog for exercise, but instead because they love the feeling of being outside and jogging. So unless you are like a body builder in spirit and are really psyched about just working out to improve your performance in the gym and physique, you need to find some other reason to do it, and I think this should be key to a geek workout program.
