This month was a twofer: I Am Legend and Ender's Game. Who read and what did you all think?

Also, as I am sure you can tell, new poll is posted so vote for August's book(s)!

Is Harry Potter really an option? eh, I figured everyone was reading it anyway.

In times such as this 1984 demands to be read again.

Only had 9 books so I just looked on B&N and took the first thing I saw.

I voted for Harry Potter because I'm already reading it and probably won't have time to read anything else.

could we add in an option for anything other than harry potter?

I bought I Am Legend and borrowed Ender's Game from the library but I'm still only halfway through I Am Legend. I've been lazy plus I read Harry Potter first. :(

How about if Harry Potter wins, in addition to that, anyone who doesn't want to read it or hasn't read the series before, etc. can read the runner up.

I'm curious, how many people picked up an obvious religious overtone/theme in Ender’s Game?

If its obvious, why would you ask if anyone picked up on it? Please go on. What exactly do you mean?

I'm curious, how many people picked up an obvious religious overtone/theme in Ender’s Game? You know Orson Scort Card is devoutly Mornon don't you? Hardly surprising that there are religious undertones to his writing. I think all his stories (especially "The Folk of the Fringe (http://www.amazon.com/Folk-Fringe-Orson-Scott-Card/dp/0312876637)") have a root in his beliefs.

Im going to throw my hat in and say that Harry Potter shouldnt be on the list.

One, because im just starting the series. And two, I think people will already read it regardless of it being in the bookclub... And, we get those Voters to pick something else...

Now that I think about it, I agree with you (after voting for Harry Potter). Anyone that hasn't read any of the books isn't going to read 6 books to catch up so they can participate, and that really isn't fair to ask them to.

Well the same thing could have been said about Ender's Game. That said, I have to say that Harry Potter is on a bigger scale than Ender's Game. I'm just glad Ender's is off the list now, now other books will get votes.

And I read 1984 in school. I had 3 weeks full of conversation about this book.

What did everyone think of I Am Legned. Also, having read the story and seen the trailer, does it seem like a proper translation to you?

I wasn't making a value judgement myself, I was asking if anyone else found it obvious.

Yes, I am aware, I've read all the Ender, Shadow, and Alvin Maker novels. However, I've found, amongst all of them, that some of his stories are obvious (one or two of the Shadow series) about it, almost preachy, and others not so much. When I read Ender’s Game the first time I really didn't pick up on it at all, but I've heard some have, and I was curious if new readers in the book club found the novel particularly colored.

I too second the motion to replace/take down the Harry Potter option, or take the runner up at the end of the month.

<_< I think you should take it off and allocate it's votes to A Game Of Thrones. It's a really wonderful book.

I read I am legend about 3 months ago. I just didn't like it. I mean I picked it up looking for a good Zombie/Vampire book and felt let down. That being said maybe the movie will be good but being as it's a blockbuster will smith movie I don't think it would be more than a good popcorn action flick and that the book is not.

Harry potter pretty much excludes everyone who hasn't read the earlier books. And that's me.

Aren't there already 50 threads discussing this book alreadY?

Not really. Ender's Game is the first book in a series, and stands alone as a great book by itself. The Harry Potter books really are best enjoyed if the reader has read all of the previous books, so its unfair to ask people to just start the Harry Potter books at the end.

Why are we still talking about this? There are 8 other books on that list pick something else. We get it, not everyone has read all the other books. Lets keep it moving people

Anyone else vote, in the future, that we separate the vote thread from discussion thread? Seems like people get interested in the selection process forget about actual discussion.

And as far as Harry Potter/Ender's Game goes, the HP series is much more action/plot driven, whereas much of the Ender series is more character driven, even if that is a crass generalization... It sticks out in my mind as I find the actual characters in the Enderverse to be more compelling, on average, than I do in the Harryverse. That said, Rowling's narrative is considerably less meandering over the course of her series.
