Like they requested, What do you guys think the punishment should be for Dan and John for saying the word "gay" on the show. Also what alternatives could they use?

Perhaps everytime they say the word gay a clip of funnelfish must be displayed for all their viewership to enjoy. lol Thus, if they want to spare us they will try their hardest not to say gay. Just kidding, I dunno what do you guys think.

First of all that will just entice Jlo to say it more, "spare us" do you know who your talking about?

Second I don't who requested it but I don't see what the issue is. Jlo's not gay bashing or anything, next thing you know they're going to give them a hard time when one of them says Dan is such a Jew (or something like that) and what about the guys giving Jonny Hulk a hard time for being Mexican?

I don't care if he stops saying it but if it's forced I think it's just... weak.

The answer is rather obvious.

Teabagging.

I hate to be un-original about something like this, but Teabagging sounds like the best remedy to me.

maybe something that is the opposite of geek...how about "jock". yeah let's give those asholes a turn of being used as a put down.

would "jock" work in all the places "gay" does?

it might sound gay saying jock though...

lets try some out by saying "dude, that's so BLANK"

since that is how "gay" is usually used it will be the test.

how about finding a name for someone in comic books, movies and video games that is totally gay and just using their names. Sulu from star trek doesn't count.

her is my first vote:

Crang!

big pink brain that lives in a robot's belly and says, "SHREEEDDDERRR" is pretty gay...plus it has tha "ca" sound dannyt is looking for.

The real problem is that the present saying is an organic creation. No one sat around a forum deciding to call lame things gay. Not that disapprove of this thread.

Like "Shakespeare in Love", it should be something natural.

Some families, when they want to cut down on swearing, use the "cuss" jar... every time you say it, you drop a quarter, or whatever, in a jar. You could do that and donate the proceeds to a gay-friendly charity/organization that promotes awareness.

You could use one of these, and post a running tally of the amount collected so far in a thread or on the show. Youniverse Money Jar (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001CU1QA/ref=tilandrasnarthex) It's cute, I got one for my daughter's allowance.

As for a replacement word, I say "lame" is a good all-around replacement, and is non-offensive. Unless you're in a wheelchair.... oh goddammit.

Yea I'm a fan of getting rid of this idea of using a word and offending a group of people. We are all guilty of falling prey to be easily offended in one way or another. I have fallen prey to being made fun of for my Southern colloquialisms but I could really care less because the ones who use it mean to try and put some of us down.

When I use the term gay to describe something I don't feel like I offend anyone and won't care if I do because people have to get over the word and discover its usage is broader.

This whole topic though can become way too broad and if these 2 guys have made the commitment then I have no problem with their determination especially if it ends with entertaining the masses.

You know what? People have a RIGHT to be reasonably offended.

Why is the *N* word so loaded? People there is a long history of the people using that word also being the same people burning crosses on people's lawns and hanging them from trees.

Likewise, why is "gay" and "fag" so offensive to a lot of people? Because there is a hsitory of people using that word while taking a baseball bat to someone.

It's the same reason that "cracker" and "honkey" isn't nearly as offensive.

Who the hell are you to tell people who are persecuted, attacked and even often in fear of their life simply for being the sex, orientation or race they are that they should "just get over it" when you use the label that people use to define them, as a word to antagonize your buddies or describe something as sucking badly?

Or, in the words of someone much wiser:

Q: When will people stop being so offended by the N word?
A: When ignorant mother ****ers stop chanting it from underneath white pointy hats..

Man you are my hero!

Now now wait a goddamn minute Mr. Seamus. I was referring to the word gay now using fag and in most cases homosexual is pretty bad but still I feel like overall we live in a world where certain people feel the right to be offended. While others who are supposedly not as persecuted as say a white male like me but still I'm a short guy. I've been threatened, I've had things said to me, but wait that doesn't count because I don't fit in a certain group.

The idea of the word cracker should not be as offensive as the magical N word, why not? If the magical N word is spoken by a KKK member its worse then say if a black panther or NAACP member called a white man a cracker? I think this is a poor argument. I do believe we have some extremely ignorant people in this country and all over this world. Often the points I make, make sense only to me.

I just feel like if some of us can be offended then we should all be offended equally. I'm just pretty much a pacifist though, I don't really take many things to heart because most people are full of bullshit when words come out of their mouth.

I apologize my opinion offended you but that was my feeling and I'm glad we could share with each other.

Well, why the hell did Gays have to use the word that means happy and alive... Its a disgrace to the word itself. Now other people cant use the word to mean stupid or unfortunate? WTF is up with that? and bringing up the "N" word... lol this isnt race we are talking about this is a Social Choice. Gay is perfectly fine being used in the context of stupidity. This thread is starting to turn gay. <---lol ... ...

here's what i posted in the "jon and dan think they sound homophobic" thread. please keep all discussions about the use of the word gay in there. respond to what i said in there. this thread is for punishments only. PUNISHMENTS!!! Has anal rape been mentioned as a punishment? either that, or they could start a "gay jar" and put a quarter in every time they use it wrong, then donate it to a gay non-profit. agreed?

FIRST OF ALL, the word gay is not being disgraced by the homosexual community. Nothing about them disgraces anything. Second of all, gay is NOT, i repeat NOT a choice. So comparing it to the "N" word is completely relevant. Gay is NOT perfectly fine in the context of stupidity coming from people that share ignorant opinions of the gay community, but from those that are aware of the plight of those people and can establish a kind of self awareness about the fact that the word they are using is an ignorant choice, then and only then is it ok.

if you are using the word fecisciously, or even as a total joke, and can express knowledge that what you are doing is wrong, yet are in a context/setting in which nobody will get offended and you can use it tastefully, then it is perfectly fine. But to do it in the context of stupidity in general without any reservation is wrong.

(for example, my gf sometimes calls me a ****ot, or stop being so gay, etc. when no one is around)

if i misread anything you wrote, i'm sorry, but i have a lot of gay friends, and know how they feel about this . I just wanna know we don't have any people that seriously believe that gayness is a choice in here, because it's not. Nothin but love, though. nothin but love ;)

Dangerboy, just to educate you:

The Human Rights Campaign which lobbies politicians for gay rights.

PFLAG - Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays which tries to help families and friends accept their homosexual children.

SMLDN - Service Members Legal Defense Network which provides legal services for homosexuals in the military.

My personal favorite (which isn't really a gay non-profit) is Pets-DC which generates funds and provides services so that people with HIV and AIDS can keep their pets.

That's just a few of the many.

I really don't think you guys should change. Does it really matter??? Please don't tell me you're trying to be more, "Politically Correct". I'm sorry guys but by simply using the word, "gay" to describe something doesn't make you homophobic, you're just using it to describe an opinion. Also, if you're worried about profanity then I really think you're going to have start cutting out a lot of other words too. Censorship, in general, sucks ass. I really don't think you need to implement any kind of self censorship. If people are using the word "gay" to mean crap, rubbish, dumb, useless, etc then there is no real problem. Words evolve and the word "gay" in its real literal meaning is happy so it has no relevance to homosexuals. If people are offended then they need to get over it. The english language has evolved since its existance and will continue to evolve everyday. The word, "gay" has just become one of those words that has multiple meanings. It shouldn't matter what you say just how you say it and what you mean when you do say it. Just my two cents... :-p

Maybe I just missed the point of the not using the word "gay" idea. Jonathan said (paraphrased from memory) that he wanted to stop using the gay expression. And was hoping to find a substitute word. An attempt to break himself of the habit. I don't know that he was worried about offending. That would be something new for the show!

I don't know about JLo but I have been trying to break myself of some of my cursing and foul language habits myself. I am not trying to impress anyone (or not offend), but it can become a crutch and is not appropriate in all circumstances.

*sigh* this is why I love you CalvinSlug... you get right to the meat of a problem.

i had this same problem in college. my homeboys and me constatnly used the word “gay” as a sub for “weak”. when i took over the house social committie we would say it a lot at house meetings. one of the legit lesbians in our house came up to me privately and told me it made her uncomfortable, which was cool so we agreed to stop using it.

we started saying “gash” instead, which she was cool with (no joke, she even started using it). it caught on pretty good.

They're tired of saying gay all the time. I don't think they took to mind which meaning was being used every time they said it, because they want to stop saying it no matter what they may mean by it. It's like someone with OCD trying to break their habits and someone being there every second to tell them that they should just be themselves instead of trying to change for everyone else.

Every time Jlo or DannyT say gay, they have to donate a dollar to the ****in' GSA.

How about that?

How about making a donation to their own charity thing when they say it. I like the idea of trying to stop saying "gay" though.

What if i want to use "Jew" for greedy, and "Mexican" for lazy? It's the exact same thing, and it's kinda refreshing to see some straight guys acknowledge it. Just because you don't see it that way doesn't mean other's don't, and changing your own bad habits is something to be applauded. Comparing a self-motivated change in your own speech to censorship is fallacious.

Personally I couldn't care less if they wanted to say those things, but if they want to stop saying it, then you can bet your sweet firm ass that I'm gonna help them do that.
