Hello everyone. I have been considering getting Gamefly and when I heard that Dan gave up on it, there had to be a good reason, so on the search I went and I came across another game rental service called Gottaplay.com. Does anyone have that service and would you recommend it?
From what I have gathered, it has WAY more shipping centers and much more recent game library, even for all the next(current) gen game consoles.
I had it for over 6 months and came to the realization that if a game was popular - you weren't getting it. It sometimes took months to get a game that was popular. I remember when i put GRAW 2 on my queue by itself to test it and it took 2 1/2 months to finally arrive. I would suggest gamefly if you don't mind not playing popular games the first month or two they're out.

I have had gamefly for over a year now, and I normally use it for the non-popular games.
I usually buy the games i really want anyways, so this works well for me.
Don't expect to get the popular games unless you're VERY lucky, or if its a game like GoW and Gamefly buys a ton of them.
Gamefly does have some good deals on older/used games though. I picked up Prey and Chromehounds for under $15 each.

we don't have it in Canada, but I wish we did... this is exactly how I'd use it.

I just cancelled my gamefly account after two months. It wasn't such an issue of not getting popular games, as I found if you kept only 1 or 2 games in your queue you'd get them sooner rather than later.
The problem was the shipping and turn around time, even with the new center in PA (I'm from Ohio). For example, during my last 30 days of the service I had Overlord for 4 days and The Darkness out for about 4 days. The rest of the time was spent in shipping, processing, and weekend delays.

See, I dont think you're using it like its intended.
If you wanted those two particular games, you shouldve gone to Blockbuster or your local rental place and gotten them locally. Gamefly is just netflix for games. Do people complain about not getting 300 on the day it was released from netflix?
Edit: Also, games are a whole nother beast compared to movies. We usually keep them longer than a day or two because the entertainment last longer with games. Heck, Ive had Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for over 2 months now. I play it here and there, but mostly play the games ive bought more than my rentals through gamefly.

I should have a save file on my computer about my opinions of gamefly since the question seems to pop up a lot on different forums.
To break it down. I use it basically to save money. I love playing games, but I can't afford to buy them all and gamefly keeps me from buying really crap games. I love the fact that you can buy games. They don't have every game for sale, but they do have good prices. Being a member for as long as I have, I get further discounts. It's a decent price, and even cheaper if you use Brightspot. Also, most places only have disc based games. Gamefly has DS, PSP and GBA titles to rent.
Negatives, the long shipping times. But they did just open a new distribution center on the east coast. Not that that really helps me in Minnesota. Availability is not that good, but not terrible either.
The only other service I've used is Redoctane. I don't know if that place is even still around, but they were worse than Gamefly in every way except they had Dreamcast games.
gamefly is FUC)[ing horrible

I download the small games I like, buy them if I love them. It saves you from buying games that you wished you hadn't. I bought the last GTA Vice CIty Stories for $6. I also live in the same town as gamefly so I don't notice ship times, often.

o man ship times were bad for me, and every game was constantly on back order. ridiculous.

I actually really like GameFly.com. There are many games that look "fun", but definitely arent worth the $60. Thats where gamefly comes in, rent a fun game play it.
You cant beat their "Keep It" option on used games either. I have not had any trouble with getting games out of the queue - got Crackdown when it first came out, loved it - and kept it. In the next 3 days they had sent me the original case with manuals (still had plastic wrap on it!).

(is this thread in the right section?)
I saw this post and had to say something to combat these bitter replies. I've been a member of gamefly for about 1 year now. Before I signed up I check out the other options and did my research. Simply put, they are the best game rental store online.
Pro's:
major shipping improvements: including a new east coast distribution center.
best selection hands down: every console, every game.
member rewards program: earn points to $ off membership.
keep it program, used games at around 1/2 the price + free shipping.
beta trade-in program: trade in old games for $ towards membership
Con's?
Everyone is complaining about shipping times, and I admit it used to take too long. In the last few months ship times on games have not been more than 3 days. Sometime 2 days. Even games listed as "low" availability I've been receiving in 3 days. These are ship times before the new Pittsburgh distribution center even started serving me in NY. Got an email this week that NY is now online with the PA center, so I'm assuming ship times are going to be even better!
Bottom Line: I understand the frustration of old members, but things have clearly changed, Gamefly has stepped it up and is now leading the industry and is continuing to invest in growth to make us members happy.
So, I'd say you should give it a try. My 2¢ :)

I've been a gamefly member for about two months now, and I'm satisfied, it usually takes 2-3 days from PA and 2-3 days when I send it back.
