I've never been an Iron Man reader but I did just get the "Armor Wars" TPB and loved it. For a late 80's story line, I thought it was really good.
Now I'm considering looking up some other back issues that followed the Armor Wars story line (issues 225-232). Can anyone here recommend if that's a good idea or would I be wasting my time? Has anyone here who read Iron Man from that time care to comment on it?
I've searched the net for an Iron Man issue listing with notes but haven't come accross anything.
Thanks!

Not a big Iron Man reader myself (only the recent title), but I noticed that Wikipedia has a nice article on Iron Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man) with info on different story arcs. It might be helpful to you.

Iron Man is probably my favorite character (tetsujin is iron man in Japanese). So I'll do my best to help.
Essential Iron Man Volumes 1 and 2- Covers the origin and early Iron Man comics. Takes you from the hulking gray suit to more famed and red and yellow.
Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle by David Michelinie- Arguably the definitive Iron Man storyline. An essential tale in the characters story.
Iron Man Extremis by Warren Ellis- This is the first story arc of the current run of Iron Man that's in print and I would say it's best. Ellis has a great grasp for the character and does some pretty cool stuff
Ultimate Iron Man by Orson Scott Card- Orson Scott Card's origin story for the Ultimate Universe's Iron Man. Simply put, it's really ****ing good.
Also there's tons of stuff in the Avengers and The Ultimates.

I'm not a big Iron Man fan, but I can't agree with this statement more.

If I read one Iron Man story, I would be satisfied if UIM was it. And some of his Avengers stuff is alright.

Orson Scott Card is really good at writing about genius kids? I had never heard that! Oh wait.... But that story is outstanding. I want more Ultimate Iron Man. But do I want it more than an Ender's Game movie??? That's a tough one. But I have to go with Ender
Saying Iron Man and "Great Story" is like saying "Jumbo Shrimp."

Tetsujin made some great choices there and I agree with all of them.
I'd also add The Armor Wars (now available as a trade) to that.
Personally, I think issues 200 through 300 are great Iron Man stories. :)

Joe Casey is also writing an upcoming Iron Man mini called "Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin". That should start coming out soon. The trade should follow shortly. Newsarama interviewed Casey and it looks like it's going to be alot of fun. He's going back to the golden age Iron Man and really go deep into his relationship with his arch rival The Mandarin.

I am also new to the forums and comics... but i am almost finished with EXTREMIS and i just love it... should i read Scott's Ultimate iron Man or continue up until the current Director of S.H.I.E.L.D stuff?
also, what else has Warren Ellis written that is worth taking a look at?
thanks,

Extremis is excellent and stands alone.
The Ultimates I & II feature what's probably is probably Stark's best interpretation in comic form.

other than the two mentioned, i don't think there are very many good iron man stories. Even Demon in a Bottle doesn't hold up too well (interesting concept, poor execution)

Demon in a Bottle reminds me a lot of the Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams GA/GL stories. Groundbreaking, but very much of their time. Haven't aged well.

It's may be too early to tell, but the first issue of Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction may turn out to be one helluva Iron Man story. i adored the first issue, pick that up

I agree with this. I think this story was a very fitting follow up to "Extremis." I thought Extremis was great, but then the series took a dip in quality. I still read it and still enjoy, but it didn't bow me away the way Ellis' run did. But when I read the first issue of Invincible I said "THIS is more like it!"

Hmm, the man's quite quite a back catalog of work, and a lot of it is very different.
What did you like about his Iron Man run? Ellis has written a number of strong Sci-Fi pieces that are not about super-heroes. Transmetropolitan is probably one of the great stand-outs. Another favorite of mine is his graphic novel Orbiter.
If you want super-heroes, you could try his take on the Thunderbolts, which is out now (he's wrapping up his run). You could also try his series Nextwave or maybe his book from last year, newuniversal. This is marginal, depending on your tastes, but you could check out Black Summer, which is sort of a political super-hero book (this is out now and hasn't been collected into a trade yet).
One of my current favorites is Fell, which has one trade out. Fell's a detective book spun from Ellis' rather signature viewpoint. ;) But it's not sci-fi and it's not super-heroes, so that's pretty far from Iron Man.

I am finally getting around to reading Planetary, and I have to say… it may be the best Ellis I've ever read. I'd definitely recommend it.

Jeez, I guess I also forgot to mention The Authority. That would be a huge Ellis super-hero work.
