the reason i made this thread, there is a problem with my internet connection that has been bothering me for quite a few months now. As such, i will try to make this as in depth as possible to help you help me in getting to the root of this problem.
I have a Compaq Machine that i bought around December of '05
512MB RAM
80GB HD
AMD Athlon 3200+ 2.2 Ghz Processor
VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
Internet Provider (Broadstar, or Xpedius communications not sure which one is the actual provider)
I am also running a Linksys WRT54G router although this desktop is connected directly to the modem.
My problem is that a few months ago my internet was blazing fast, the service was spectacular, i would get at least 350kb/s on EVERY download reguardless. Usually 450kb/s or more.
But then a few months back, we had some really strong wind, and the power surged and went out for around an hour, i was already in bed at this point so i didn't bother to get up. But when i got on the internet the next day, it was MUCH slower htan the day before, i found that my downloads MAXED at about 40kb/s and i couldn't watch youtube videos without pausing to let it buffer. Even though the day before it would never have to be paused on youtube, dailymotion, or any of those sites.
I thought maybe the power surge had cuased the modem some trouble so i got a new cable modem. The internet still works fine but no speed increase, it's the same speed as before. I know this is not a hardware issue with my desktop because the laptop in the house also had this speed reduction at the same time. I also know that the router is not causing it beucase i unplugged the router and restarted the computer and the internet had no speed increase at all.
I am also fairly certain that it is not caused by some sort of malware beucase the laptop also had the same decrease in speed at the same time, and the laptop is only used to check business news and email.
Is it possible there are any other causes for this? or is my provider just getting worse? beucase lately my speed has been going down even more... and it's getting to the point where it's just ridiculous. I'd like to have my internet back on top again at good speeds. I'd appreciate any help, and i appologize that this post is so long i tried ot make it as in depth as possible
