View Full Version : Comics This Week by ThisWeekInComics.com and Fred
Hello All
I now have a demo podcast. You can check it out here: http://comicsthisweek.libsyn.com/ (http://comicsthisweek.libsyn.com/) and download it or alternatively you can manually add it to iTunes by going to Advanced->Subscribe To Podcast and add this url (http://comicsthisweek.libsyn.com/rss).
Please remember that this is only a demo and that I'd like your feedback.
Thanks

This turned out really well. Great analysis on the week's books. Thoughtful and funny.
Keep up the good work!
thanks a lot.
Also I should add:
QUICK SHOW NOTE:
I don't mean to say that I hope that they throw the Punisher's baby out. I mean to say that I hope they throw the idea out. Throwing babies out is senseless; there are hospitals, fire stations, and dumpsters everywhere that you can leave them in.

So, I listened to the demo via iTunes.
Please, don't be offended but Fred you need to not breathe so heavily into the mic. Back up a bit, my eardrums are getting pounded here.
Also, a little less "I don't know"'s. It's your opinion, you should know. I'd suggest writing down some bullet points you'd like to talk further about on each book, then go from there in the recording. At least till you get your feet under you with the podcasting thing. Nothing wrong with off-cuff reviews but too many stammerings make one sound indecisive.
Other than that, I enjoyed your more elaborated reviews. Good luck, dude!

Hope I didn't come off too harshly. It may seem like a minor nitpick; but for those of us listening with high end in-ear headphones little things like people banging their mic sound like EXPLOSIONS.
I did like the demo though.
thanks. I understand. I've got to get a better handle on the intake volume. I had actually planned to do some more experimenting with it this week.

Fred i really liked your podcast dude, it's like reading your reviews only in podcast form! In terms of suggestions, my only complaint would be stuff that you'l get better at with time anyway. the more podcasts you get out the better you'll become, you might want to add in some music or an intro, but what i really loved was your news segment, i really liked hearing your take on the week's news. If your gonna stick with a news and review format, im there buddy! can't wait for episode 2

thanks a lot mike. I actually plan to have music. This one didn't have it because I was planning on just sitting on it, but the few people that heard it liked it so I decided to let it fly. Then, I just wanted to get it up as fast as possible because I'm shooting for Thursday night on #2.

I agree with you about Batman this week.
Thanks for checking it out. The good news is that this storyline only lasts for one more issue.
And then is it more sh*t from Morrison or is that when the big all Batman book event takes place?
starting with 670, it looks like they're beginning the return of R'as Al Ghul
I just listened to Fred's This Week in Comics podcast episode 4. I really enjoyed it. Glad that I have a few podcasts that don't go an hour and a half. I like how Fred keeps his reviews short and to the point. The only problem was that he seemed to kind of mumble his voice and trail off at times.
thanks. I'm actually looking for a new mic. This would improve some of the vocal issues.

fred, what time do you post your podcast? i always seem to miss it when im synching my iPod for the next morning
the last two weeks, it's been around 1AM on Thursday - so late Wednesday night. You might've missed the sync this time because libsyn was down for like 18 hours. They're back up now. However, no podcasts were available for download for nearly a day. Pissed? yes, I was.
Very cool.

It's not that. I've finally gotten used to it and I like it from that standpoint. However, it's too motion and noise sensitive. I'm getting really annoyed with editing out my breathing (where possible), hearing scratching when my mic hits my stubble (I record late at night), and blowing people out when I laugh.
It might be my particular mic, but I think that I'd probably do better with something stationary.
paper
08-24-2007, 03:56 PM
Can you move the mic back? Is it flexible in any way?
My concerns with a stationary mic are as follows. Even though you're not physically tethered by a cord, you're still forced to talk in one position, otherwise your volume is all over the place. You're forced to go to the mic because the mic doesn't follow you. They also tend to be more sensitive, so there's more background noise. That's just my experience though.
Now that I've been using it for a while, I heartily recommend my headset (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005A9AU/102-4478706-2043324). The noise canceling really works.
Then again, I can understand if you want to go with the stationary mic. I'm really quiet, so I'd have to try pretty hard to blow out the levels.
The one that I have now moves vertically but not horizontally. Thanks for the link. I'm going to check that out.

No, I'm having the same problem.
Libsyn was down for a day and now it's acting all weird. I just tried sending a manual ping at iTunes and that didn't seem to do it. So, I reposted the episode just now. Hopefully, that will force iTunes to refresh the feed.
I'm so frustrated because it's appearing if you're subscribed (to some people), but not on the main Comics This Week page. I think that it has to do with Libsyn being down for a while.
So anyhow, Episode #4 Re-post should begin showing soon.
Thanks for letting me know guys.
Also, if you like the show and you feel inclined - I could use iTunes reviews. You don't have to say that you love it or anything - you just have to bump the single one that I've gotten off the front page. That guy's a dick. ;)
EDIT: I forgot to mention that you can download it here (http://media.libsyn.com/media/comicsthisweek/episode4.mp3) if you'd like it now. thanks

Wow, this is exciting -- I just found out about this, but have not had a chance to download. What DOES Fred sound like in person? (Probably as funny as in the threads).
I don't know if you are still having the "breathing problems," but here is a quick little tip I learned years ago from a pro in a free A/V seminar - don't talk directly into the microphone with it right in front of your mouth and nose, but have it just to the side of your mouth (as it would be if you had a head set), pointing sideways rather than to your face. The sound of you speaking gets picked up, but the breathing goes forward. But maybe you got past the heavy breathing stage... (am restraining myself greatly with regard to double entendres here...)
As for actual content? Can't wait to hear...
thanks wally. I hope you like it.

I got a chance to listen to the podcast, and it seems many audio problems got resolved recently. Absolute favorite segment - answering questions from others. Here is my advice - trying to be "pro procaster" sounding just does not suit you, but when you throw that out the window, and just unleash the mega Fred we all know and love, trash talking and all that, but with some good positive and insightful things to say about good books, it is much more fun. Remember - you did decide to label your podcase "explicit" so I say -- no holds barred, unleash.

See what I mean? Fred - face the reality -- Love the bash tastic. And others of us know how to feed that well, so...off to a great start! Others of us just need to keep feeding the Fred Frezy through questions and comments in the email to you, and you'll be great. What you serve up is a nice alternative to self congratualtory, too nice and civil, kiss the creator ass stuff out there in podcast land! But you do it with good humor that prevents you from coming off as overly negative, ugly or juvenile. Good stuff!

I think mine will be either, me reading local Chinese restaurant menus out loud or a Uwe Boll fan podcast.
The exact details are still being hammered out. It's definitely going to be scripted items though in the vein of the Morrissey's Cat Podcast.

There will certainly be cat podcasts. I think there will be other types of things too, but we will probably start there.

My grandmother was convinced her cat knew how to email, and fax people. She also gave him two bowls of cat-nip a day. It was called "Wacky" and contained pot. He weighed like twenty five pounds, and rarely moved. His name was Tom. He never emailed me, and I always wondered why he didn't want to be friends. He might make a good podcast. =p

Comics This Week #10 - 10/3/2007
Holy flaming Christ - a week where I liked all of my books! I write this as I stand next to a sign that reads "Free Unicorn Rides". Seriously though, there is no Shit Book of the Week. I did a second Book of the Week feature in place of the usual SBOW feature.
This week I talk about Strange Girl #18, Countdown #30, Buffy #7, Detective Comics #837, Sidekick Summer Spectacular #2, Scalped #10, Ms. Marvel #20, and take questions from the forums.
As always, there are spoilers.

I came up with 2 versions of a new Comics This Week logo. My wife says that she likes them, but that they're more appropriate for a department store that sells women's clothing (I don't get that).
What do you all think? I like the one with the black stroke. You can see them in different sizes here: http://thisweekincomics.com/logos.html

I kinda agree with your wife, Fred. Neither logo is indicative of a comic book podcast and the lettering is looks more apropos to Marshall Fields or Harods.
They are ostensively pretty though.
(honest opinion. if you like them go for it.)

I understand that it must be difficult trying to come up with a logo that isn't just a comic cover with "This Week In Comics" on top of it.
What's wrong with this one?
http://www.thisweekincomics.com/images/thisweeklogoSmall.gif
Turn it into a word balloon and you're fine.
I own comicsthisweek.com too and I host the Comics This Week podcast. I'm considering simplifying by doing the Comics This Week podcast from ComicsThisWeek.com.
I'm kind of hesitant to use something that screams COMICS. This isn't because I want to misrepresent my show. It's because so many of the things that would scream COMICS are kind of cliches at this point. There are a whole bunch of shows that use a word balloon derivative logo, a comic collage, etc.
Also, the present logo doesn't work as well as it could in iTunes because it's horizontally-oriented. Even if I were to enlarge it vertically, it would just be the same thing but with more white space.
labor_days
10-06-2007, 12:08 AM
Makes sense. But ya'know, the podcast is kinda about comic books.
Forgetting that I am familiar with the show; were I to see a logo such as the last two, I would not associate them with a comic book podcast at first glance.
A logo should be recognizable, distinct and representative.
Pretty sure you'll figure something out.
I want to find something that's "outside of the box". The trick is to say comics without being so obvious. Therein lies the rub.
scimoc?
It implies your Podcast is magic.
Though I guess not everyone knows Zatanna.

Hey Fred, I messed around in paint just now and here's some goofy ideas.
A and B are my favorites.
A) Stick with what you got, turn oval into a circle and your good to go.
B) I know you wanted to avoid cliches, but I haven't seen a panel logo yet.
C) Just clean and simple.

B is genius. I'd change the background color for each panel though. Primary colors maybe? Or if you wanted to keep the color scheme, change up the texture. Blue stipple. Blue cross-hatch. I dunno. Even the fonts could be different for each panel if you wanted to take it that far.

I even tried different word balloon styles around each word.
The problem is when you shrink it down to iPod level, it gets really muddled.

The different Primary colors is a wee bit to Mondrian for my taste.
The different texts is still a little wonky when shrunk down.
The variant blue shades is really nice, but it doesn't match the blue that Fred's using currently.

This is why you should limit the number of questions. We're going to run out of things to ask anyway. :)
I'm only being critical because I know how hard it is to hit all the talking points when you have a deadline. I can't imagine having to answer 5 to 10 questions rapid-fire like that. Especially at that time of night.

Just listened to your most recent episode and I gotta say I chuckled to myself at one point. When you got to Mary Marvel section of your Countdown review, I knew that first panel would garner a comment. When I was reading the book on Wednesday night and I flipped to that page, the first thought that popped into my head was "Fred is going to have a field day with the art here". I figured it would have more to do with the anatomy of her sholders. Go back and take a look at it and you'll see what I'm talking about. She looks like someones holding her elbows behind her back or maybe the gerbal needed to be shifted.
thanks. yeah, that was really bad.

So today I got around to listening to both of the FSKJDL Plogger episodes. I thought they were a really fantastic idea. Short and sweet, good to get you through to Wednesday, and figure out what's going on with you outside of comics.
A bit of constructive criticism for episode one... Find some transitions between stories. I don't even mean, necessarily, music. Just that once you finished your first story about the pirate (awesome) you just jumped into the next story with no sign of the first being done other than a slight pause. Tie it together a bit. At least, that was my observation. It was fantastic and funny though.
The second episode: Not anything format related, just something you might want to know. If you didn't enjoy this Kid Rock album, future albums won't be for you either. After starting out as a pre-pubescent Vanilla Ice, Kid Rock moved into the hard rock family. After a while he adapted a bit of a pop sound, and has since moved to country. He has stated that country is where his roots are, and that it is where he wants to stay. He has been embraced by a lot of country legends, and plans to stay. If he changes genre again, which I doubt he will, I'm guessing he'll be trying to find something new again.
