Marvel Studios is setting Stardust helmer Matthew Vaughn to direct Thor, based on the Marvel Comics character, Variety reported. Marvel is aiming for a production start this winter.
Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) did the adaptation of the comic-book franchise that launched in 1962. Thor is a blond hammer-wielding god who's sent to Earth to protect mankind.
Vaughn's Stardust, based on Neil Gaiman's novel, opens Aug. 10 and stars Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Wouldn't this have better been announced at Comic Con?

Maybe they didn't have all the details till now. I think they are going a little overboard with these movies. Might be cool but I would need more details. Lets hope they get someone that looks like the characters and not someone they think will put peoples asses in the seats.

That'll be HHH the WWE wrestler then, because I can't imagine many actors having that physique.

It does seem like ANY comic book can be turned into a film nowadays. I think that hollywood execs are just trying to make some fast cash with these. They figure that geeks are tremendously loyal, and as long as the don't screw with the source too much then they'll probably turn a profit, and maybe even sart a chain of sequels.
But Marvel, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should.
Remember with great power comes great responsibility.

The fact that you have to provide a link to explain who you're talking about might be your answer. ;)

Thor casting news...
Kevin McKidd, star of NBC's upcoming time-travel series Journeyman, confirmed for SCI FI Wire—sort of—rampant rumors that he may play the title character in a big-screen version of the Marvel comic book Thor.
Speaking in a conference call on Sept. 6, McKidd (HBO's Rome) called the reports "semi-true." "I didn't know about it either until I heard the rumors and I called my agent," McKidd said. "And he went, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've been talking to them about it.' But the last I heard from my agent, they're talking that they want to go for somebody much younger, a 19- or 20-year-old, for that role. So they're reconceptualizing it as we speak."
Matthew Vaughn (Stardust) is set to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, and he reportedly wants McKidd, whose credits include The Last Legion, for the lead role of the God of Thunder.
Even if a younger actor were to play Thor, McKidd hastened to add, he might still appear in the project. "I think there's the other main male character in that movie that I'm in consideration for," the Scottish actor said. "But, certainly by no means it's not in the bag or anything and, to be honest, until I read a script I don't really know. I haven't really had a look at a script. This is all still just information that's coming in. So, you know, it could be fun, but it just depends on what's on the page. I think it all starts and finishes with the quality of the script."

You can't really mean this, I mean come on. They'll make a Captain Caveman movie before you Brian Baddock on the silver screen.
Just keep in mind that a live action Underdog movie was released this year.

Thor could be an awesome fantasy movie. From what I have heard from script reviews, it is written that way.
After Stardust, I think this could be a great film. I just hope they cast an actor with the right sense of nobility for Thor and don't throw some wrestler or bodybuilder in the role.
While it doesn't seem likely after some of the comic book inspired garbage we've seen, it is definitely possible that a series of great movies could come from Marvel self financing its movies.
