This makes me want to scour my house for my lost copy of Advent Children.

I assume FF8 will be next week? my favourite game ever.
I wonder if they'll make mention of the utter disaster of FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN.

FF VIII and IX will be on next monday. I personally think IX deserves it's own. As well as Tactics.

FF8 is also my favorite game. Its to bad that they dont have spin offs for 8 or even 9 like they do with 7 and 10. I think i read a long time ago that there was gonna be a FF8 sequel but it was cancelled. I could be wrong though.

It's good that they don't have spin offs like final fantasy x-2 and dirge of cerberus for FF8...

I actually never beat FF10 and only played x-2 and i liked it more then 10. I cant account for Dirge. I was thinking more like crisis core and advent children. Something with the characters of 8 since they did leave it somewhat open, its been a couple years since i played it though.

I hated 10. I played it for two days and still felt I was being lead around by the nose.
I gave up in disgust.
That end sequence of FF8 still brings tears to my eyes, with that beautiful Faye Wong song and Nobuo Uematsu's magnificent score.

I liked the retrospective on 6 better.
Although maybe thats just because 6 is the best game.
Best description of why Kefka kicks ass ever.

While I definitely have fond memories of VII, I think IX is a better game. Though, I seem to enjoy Final Fantasy's more when the characters abilities are somewhat set rather than completely blank slates.

my wife wants me to clarify that I'm not one of those "FFVII lovers" . you know what I mean. And while i do love VII for it being the first 3D FF, and my introduction to playstation, VI holds a bigger place in my heart. That and Tactics... hehe...well yeah...after Tetsuya Nomura came on board in Square...everything got weird...and we got too many spinoffs...it's like Nomura likes to make fan fic of his own stuff, only it's not as good.

I didnt play it for a long time either. I only wanted to beat it so I could watch the movie and have an idea of what was going on. Also final boss on FF7 was the most disappointing boss fight ever.

Yet...there's so much build up for this game. I think it's more hype than actual amazing gameplay.

No the game is really fun, and has a great story. I think FF8 is the best, its a nostalgic game for me. Im sure if FF7 would have came along first i would have liked it more but i duno. You should try playing it.

I'm really enjoying GT's retrospectives. They did some for Zelda, and are currently doing Final Fantasy (obviously) and Metroid. Seeing their piece on Super Metroid made me remember just how amazing that game was...
Anyways...
I really didn't like the magic/ability system in FF9, and the story never particularly grabbed me either. The magic/summon system in FF8 was also its biggest pitfall (it was cool once you actually had the magic drawn, but sitting there drawing 100 ultimas 1-2 at a time was not exactly exciting), but the characters more than made up for it.
Lots of people say that 10 is one of the best, but I really didn't like it that much. At the risk of being a "standard" Final Fantasy fan, I'd have to say that 6, 7, and Tactics were the best. I'm currently playing through 12, and that seems like a huge refinement over 10 (License Board > Sphere Grid, 12's Cast > 10's Cast), but I'm not sure I'm ready to label it one of the best yet.
Reading back over this, I might as well have just written my thoughts on every FF game... blah.

The Zelda Retrospective was awesome, espically when they went through the split timeline theory. I watched that so many times.
I agree with you about FF9 story I didnt really like it that much either especially when I just got done playing FF8. I dont really remember the magic system in the game. I have to disagree with 8. I liked the summoning in 8 more then any other FF game. The drawing I can see where people would be turned off, I personally didnt mind it. I never played 6 or Tactics. And I didnt really like 12 at all.

I loved VII ....even though I never finished it. I played through it twice and had memory card mishaps both times. The data would magically get erased. I was extremely pissed the second time. I had went through and gotten everything. All the ultima weapons and final limit breaks. KOTR ....Gold chocobo's ........everything.
I think I have some Final Fantasy Curse because the same thing happened with Tactics as well.

It's just the only one people had to talk about for pretty much the entire PS2 console cycle.
Personally, I loved the system in 10. Love the sphere grid.
****ing HATED the storyline. And most of the characters. Auron was the only one that was cool.
In contrast, I liked the plot in 12 better than 10, but I hate the whole "plays like an mmo" thing they did with the gameplay. The License board is awful. It brings character genericism too a new level. Which is compounded by the fact that all the characters look the same. 5 people with short blond hair and one wererabbit. Goodjob on the character designs there.
