I hope you realize that in Japan, Bleach is an "anime for kids."

There's also several threads about anime already, just got to look around for them.

i guess kids over there can listen to swearing see gore and semi-naked women......even more of a reason i want to live there :D

you cant get anymore violent or adult than Berserk. Although those are not its selling points. It has a brilliant story.
I recommend the manga more than the anime though.

/anime nerd on

Well, I'm a huge fan of Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece.

While I realize those are kids shows, I can't help it. I like shounen series. If it's got badass fights, I'm in. If there's some good storytelling to boot, that's just a bonus. Basically, you have to keep in mind all the shounen jump shows are aimed at basically the same age group that Avatar is here. It's just in japan, they are alot more lax on things like blood and violence. I know, it's hard to imagine that a show like Bleach is aimed at 10 year olds, but it is.

When you say kids shows, I'm gonna assume you mean stuff like Pokemon.

If you like Bleach, you'd probably like One Piece in it's japanese(with subtitles) format. Don't judge it by its cartoon network version. They literally cut out all the best, or even good parts of the show. It's got alot of imagination in it, and humor, and action. Alot more blood in the uncut versions also...

And Naruto...well, I'm sure alot of people don't like the show because it's too DBZish and the main character is pretty obnoxious, but its still got some of the best anime martial arts battles you can find. And the plots pretty good for one of those shows that goes on forever.

For more mature shows, Claymore, Death Note and Black Lagoon are all great. I think you'd have to download fansubs to watch Claymore and Death Note still. That's how I get all my anime anyway. If I really like a series I buy it when it comes out on DVD provided they are uncut. The new Hellsing OVA's are really good too.

For shows that aren't so new, like the guy above says, Berserk rules. Although, the anime ends in a really awkward place. Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop are of course 2 great series. So is all of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

So I guess my advice is, go download One Piece fansubs, Claymore, Death Note, and go buy Ghost in the Shell and Samurai Champloo.

Yeah, Death Note is pretty good from what I've seen.

I also recommend Cowboy Bebop (probably my favorite)
Trigun
Evangelion
and anything by Miyazaki.

Death Note is really good(although the manga is better). Claymore is pretty good. Naruto shippuden is good, I didnt really like naruto until the last 30 episodes. Cowboy bebop. I watched 3 of the Hellsing ovas and those are good.
Trigun is my favorite show of all time so I definitely recommend that for sure. Not really pointing out anything new here but thats the stuff i watch. Oh Grave of Fireflys is a pretty good movie its not an action movie but its still good.

I stop watching Naruto but still collecting the manga version (you can't give it up when you got more than 30 issues already). Naruto WAS great, I can see those ninja moves, awesome strategy but now...it's just some monsters fighting...

i recommend MONSTER, it's awesome.

Evangelion is a pretty adult-ish anime...

Gantz is cool...pretty violent...some surprisingly graphic stuff near the middle.

Beck...no sex or violence...just a bunch of swearing and kid turning from a loser to a sort of loser who's pretty good at playing music. Man this anime is sweet.

i second Beck. its a unique anime, since there are VERY few anime about musicians. One warning though is that it has a lot of Engrish.

as for Berserk, dont judge it by the first volume. The first 3 volumes are flashbacks. The story only starts in Vol 3+.

It is a movie, not a series. Take you a couple of hours to get through. As far as anime goes, it is pretty heavy going, but it is one of the grand daddies of the genre. And it has an English voice track which helps a lot.

For a movie I recommend Princess Mononoke. This film, I can't even describe how epic it is or just how amazing it is. Go watch it.
For a tv show Cowboy Bebop's a good show to go watch and get into. Sort of film noir-y with great action moments and sometimes hilarious dialogue.

I think I'm gonna put the h8ter pants on and nix a few of the suggestions here.

Robotech. This is one of those what you call "doesn't hold up" shows. I remember thinking this show was great when I was a little kid. But a couple years ago I bought the series on DVD and rewatched it.....awful. Just awful. I was bored to tears. And that stupid girl found an excuse to sing that same song in every single episode.

Evangelion. Don't let the avatar fool you. This is one of my most hated anime ever. I've never had a main character I've wished cancer on younger or more often than that kid. Plus if you like bullshit no-ending endings and "complex religious symolism" consisting of picking random names from the bible to name things in the show, than its just the right series for you!

It really depends what your into. I think now is a perfect time to make the embarrassign admission that I was totally into Sailor Moon as a kid. But come on! who wouldn't fall in love with tuxedo mask.

Escaflowne (fantasy/mecha overall best anime)
Millenium Actress (post-modern anime that examines memory)
Paprika (just saw it, too short but has great visuals)
Gundum Wing/Endless Waltz (political/mecha, hero is hot)

Escaflowne is freaking awesome...just too damn awesome...it's on my top list that switches between Evangelion and Revolutionary Girl Utena as my #1 fave anime.

Millenium Actress...never seen this one but I like Satoshi Kon's films. I would recommend Tokyo Godfathers if you wanted to see one of his. I just watched Paprika, and while it looked awesome...it was an outright bore fest for me. I got so into it after the first amazing animation extravaganza sequence, but then it just went to hell.

Sailor Moon is pretty dope....especially the last 26 episodes..which is most of what I really watched. And the Live action series was sweet too.

...........

I can agree that the main protagonist to Evangelion is a little bastard, but don't look over the rest of the great cast. I think there are more people who love it than people who hate it.

But seriously, you can't discount the fact that Evangelion was one of the most crazy popular anime of all time. After it came out, everyone was trying to imitate it (Brain Powerd, RahXhephon) and it spawned many video games and overall extreme fandom, cause it was a great anime!

There are two eras of anime, people...Before Eva and After Eva.

They are remaking Evangelion actually...there will be four new movies...the first coming to Japanese theatres Sept 1st this year. It apparently will be a retelling of the story + more...And I think they are focusing on not putting in all the cryptic devices used in all the mental trippy scenes, and are going farther away from what the TV series ending was.

The movie however, The End of Evangelion did show a pretty good wrap of what would happen in the end, it just gave you tons more head trippy philosophical stuff. Anyway, yeah I like Evangelion.

I am so glad to hear that someone else LOVES Escaflowne. Props to you, nobodysleeps.

And your right about Paprika. After I walked out of the theatre I was dissapointed. It didn't spend any time with the character or the world they inhabited which was the main problem in the movie. Unlike Miyasaki, who uses tracking shots and really grounds the film in the environement, Paprika just glazes over the rules of the world that the characters inhabit. And that was what was so frustrating. They kept switching from dream to reality until the line between the two vanished and ultimatly so did the continuity and the story.

I also can wait for the new Eva movies. I'm a huge fan, and despite the large backlash against the series, i still remain so. Yes it has plenty of issues and pretensions. I agree with everyone's problem with it. Shinji was a little shit, but this was a pioneer in its genre. Finally a story for adults. Before Eva, had anyone ever watched an anime that didn't involve sailor transformations, finding dragonballs or silly and flighty romances?

Paprika would have been great as a short OAV series.

I'm generally into all the old school anime of the 90's and 80's. Either I don't have the time now or I'm not interested anymore in a lot of stuff. Beck did capture me, as did Gantz. But I'm finding it hard to want to get into Deathnote, I'm giving L'es Chevalier D'eon a chance and it's pretty interesting, more because it's clearly inspired by Rose of Versailles, one of my fave animes(that also inspired Utena). But as far as new anime goes, it's hard to find anything that I'm actually able to get into. All anime just starts off really slow and doesn't really pay off. Holy crap the Devil May Cry first episode was...just not interesting, nothing happened.

But I still give anime a chance, it has to grab me quickly like Yakitate!! Japan did...Beck already has a cool concept since I'm into a lot of Japanese rock and indie rock... but I used to be huge into anime...and I was also wishing it would get popular and mainstream so that I can buy anime cheap and buy it at wal mart or fred's without having to pay the ridiculous retail prices at places like Suncoast or Sam Goody. But now it's popular and I don't care anymore.

anime movies:
Princess Mononoke is good, Howls Moving Castle is one of my favs

I will also don my h8ter pants for a moment. Though many people that I know love Naussica Valley of the Wind, I was not a fan. I walked out of the room halfway through and went to sleep.

But come on! who wouldn't fall in love with tuxedo mask.Honestly, I used to watch it too. Back in the day. It used to run back to back with DragonballZ(which I used to watch religiously). Back before DBZ was ever on Cartoon Network and it became hugely popular all of a sudden.

Actually, it was Ronin Warriors(which I loved) followed by Dragonball for a long time. And then one day it switched over to Sailor Moon followed by DBZ. It was just this little anime block that I watched every day.

Hell that was back before I even knew the word anime, it was just "Woo! Japanese cartoons time!" back then.

As so many people here love AKIRA, I'd recommend reading the manga. The movie only covers a small portion of the actual story. It was my first manga I've read, and is still my no.1.

The ANIMATRIX is one of the best animated animes out there. altough only short episodes, the distinct style of the animator is very different in each episode.

and, as my avatar shows, I'm a huge fan of "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex". there are 2 seasons (1.Gig+2.Gig) and one movie: "Solid State Society".

The anime series "Ergo Proxy" has a very dark, mature style, in which the character design differs heavily from the more classical styles, like Naruto/DBZ. also worth watching.

and at last, of course, two very, very fine examples of anime-movies: "Steamboy" and "Princess Mononoke".

I'll suggest one that I don't believe has been mentioned yet. It's one of the darkest and most violent animes you will probably ever see, with the exception of a few others. But its a great series, possibly even more so because of its high violence. It's not like any other anime you've seen. ;)

Elfen Lied (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfen_Lied)

Try anime-element.org, thats where I get some of my anime. They don't update as often as they should, so you might want to check the fan subs websites, such as [shinsen-subs] (http://www.shinsen-subs.org/). Don't worry about illegal-ness or anything, its only illegal when the series is licensed, which then they either take the series down or are forced too.

I'll also recommend "Darker Than Black". Not gory or violent, but its a really awesome series so far. It's starting to fall into my "favorite anime series of all time" list.

Going for the obvious:
Naruto - Great action but you have to know when to stop watching for the filler is boring. Skip 102-106. Stop around 135, then go onto Naruto Shippuden. The manga is on par with the anime.

Rurouni Kenshin - Unfortunately all of the manga didn't get made into anime, but the series is amazing. The manga is superior, but only because its that great, not because the anime suffers in any way.

Trigun - A brilliant anime. Probably my favorite all things considered. Only 26 episodes, but it has great quality.

FLCL - Only 6 episodes, which is kind of good, because you'll have to watch it more than once to get all the metaphors unless you're some sort of film or english major and look for this stuff in all your entertainment.

Not so obvious
G Gundam - I'm not a big fan of the giant robot series, but I dug this one for some reason. Its more about the characters, less about some intergalactic war.

Ghost Stories - The only series I'd insist people watch only the dub. It was a mediocre horror anime that got dubbed into a hilariously offensive comedy. Watch it with people though. Best times our anime club ever had.

DBZ is always the best!!

So far, Shippuden hasn't really wowed me. Pre-filler Naruto is still one of my top 3 shows of all time. And while Shippuden is by no means bad, there haven't been any real WOW moments in it yet. All the long slow build-up has to lead somewhere or else whats the point? This show need an equivalent to Lee vs. Gaara to blast my leggings off.

That was a good fight, Lee is my favorite character. Anyway the reason I like it more is that Naruto is actually good at what he does now. Before he would just bust out his fox thing (cant think of the name right now) and that would be it, he didn't have much skill. Sakura also made a lot of improvements, she was so worthless before now she kicks ass.

My anime watch list is a bit old. I haven't had much time to watch current ones or find new and interesting animes to watch. Anyway, some of my suggestions:

- AKIRA. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out - it's a must watch. If you like the movie, read the mangas.. it's even better.
- Bleach, Naruto, One Piece.. all three are pretty obvious but it keeps me entertained week to week (although I find the Naruto manga more interesting than the anime).
- anything done by Hayao Miyazaki such as: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle. I love his work.
- Death Note, Claymore, Full Metal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell / Stand Alone Complex
- Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, the Gundum series.
- haha this is pretty girly, but I have to throw in Sailor Moon. I got into anime as a kid watching it... probably because I was so in love with Tuxedo Mask

I definitely watch animes that are subbed. I can't stand how American voice actors suck at dubbing and it usually kills the experience for me.

Not to mention both their opening credits feature songs by L'arc En Ciel.
*High fives for L'Arc~en~Ciel mention* :)

There's been some great suggestions so far I've really enjoyed the following

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle

Hellsing the series

And for something really bonkers try Excel Saga :)

Dear TRS crew and dear readers, please check out Samurai Champloo, I know it got mentioned already. It is just epic, hilarious and super rad! It's like an adult version of Avatar. If you love Avatar, you will also love this show, it has awesome fights, cool humor and an epic story! It was my first Anime. It wow'ed me and many friends of mine who became big fans of the show. Must see. It got us all interested in other Anime shows.

yeah, i hate the voice acting too, worse is if it's dubbed with wordfit and they are lazy and dont add a second subtitle layer in, so your hearing 1 thing in english and the subs are saying something else lol

as for ones to watch, have to admit im a fan of rumiko takahashi
so *らんま1/2 (ranma), inuYasha, Urusei Yatsura.

On another note....

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a fairly recent show that's really good.. You should check it out.

It's by Gainax...and it's their first good show since Evangelion. You should check it out.

If you like Sailor Moon you might like Shoujo Kakumei Utena...or Revolutionary Girl Utena.

It's nothing like sailor moon but it's directed by the same guy.

Utena is like...one of the best anime ever in my book. I can't really talk about it too much unless I write an entire essay on it.

There is so much visual symbology and lyrical symbology during duels in this show.

Well ok. Everyone goes to this school...There's a girl named Utena who wishes to be a prince because when she was young she was saved by a prince, blah blah, anyway.

There's this girl named Anthy who's the rose bride and Utena and everyone on the student council duel for her. But they all have their uses for her, which is another theme in the show...but yeah....every duel has a duel song that like...delves into the challenging duelist's psyche...it's just...awesome. It gets especially dark and the stakes are raised after episode 12 or 13 when it gets into the Black Rose saga...man it's good.

Ghost in the Shell(series is the best..films are ok),Cowboy Bebop (my two faves ever)

Appleseed (and this march the sequel is out on DVD)

IMO I never thought much of Akira ..seems pretty mediocre to me.

I just got into L'Arc en Ciel a few years ago but mann their old stuff was amazing. Back in, I think it was '06, my friend (who is a huge L'AeC fan) got tickets to see Hyde live at the House of Blues. He invited me so I went and found it really cool but I had no idea who Hyde was (I didn't know JRock then). Looking back, I'm kinda kicking myself in the ass cause if I had known L'AeC, I would have appreciated that experience soooo much more. And of course, Hyde killed the show .

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely give it a watch when I have time. Ahh talking about the older animes really brings back the childhood memories for me.. good times :)

Alright, I'm gonna say it......(looks both ways)

Dragonball Z

Seriously, I couldn't and still can't get enough of that show, I really wish it hadn't ended. Pretty much the whole series is incredible including the Frieza, Cell, and ESPECIALLY Buu Sagas.

If you wanna go even more over the top, check out Dragonball GT.

Dude, I remember watching it when I was younger and those episodes when he was turning into Super Saiyan were pretty awesome (though it took forreeevvvvveeeeeerrrrrr, and I'm not exaggerating) and when he was trying to do that Spirit Ball attack to kill Frieza, they really know how to stretch the show. One episode would be like, it's getting bigger, the next episode, it's getting a little bigger. Fast forward about 20 episodes, he finally launches it! But yeah, DBZ were good times. I never finished it though. Only got to the Buu saga.

Hahah exactly! But I was pretty pissed after every cliffhanger though. I remember watching it on Cartoon Network and everytime the show ended, I couldn't believe literally nothing happened! But my friend and I thought Goku was so cool that we didn't really mind it too much.. 'Goku is so gonna beat Frieza!' 'Mann I wish I can be a Super Saiyan' then I think we pretended that we had super powers like Goku and go around and try to kick people's ass. Haha I was such a little tom boy back then, still am in a lot of ways.

i hate Naruto because they give ninjas magic powers and one wears orange
Just something I wanted to point out.
The creator of Naruto is a fan of Dragonball Z and if you look closely you'll see it bleed through in Naruto. Here are some...

Master Roshi, mostly noted as a perverted hermit and teacher of Goku and Krillin.
Jiraiya, also considered a pervert and teaches naruto. Also known to roam the world alone researching for his books or doing missions.

Naruto, cocky, adventurous, bullheaded, gets stronger after every fight, and wears orange. Has blonde hair.
Goku, adventurous, sometimes cocky, gets stronger after every fight, wears an orange gi. Has blonde hair when super saiyian (or saiyajin if you want to get technical).

Vegeta, loner and always trying to be stronger than Goku.
Sasuke, loner as well and also tries to be stronger than Naruto or Itachi.

Both series base the "powers" from a form of spirit energy that is called chi, or ki.
I also believe that Sakura is based somewhat off of Bulma, and I'm sure there are others that I can't think of at the moment.

Besides I wouldn't discount Naruto totally, yes there have been some bad fillers and sometimes they drag an episode out. But overall it's a great series.

Here is a list of some animes I watch.
A Perfect Blue (great psychological thriller)
Dragonball (original, Z, and GT)
Key: The Metal Idol
Appleseed
Akira
Ghost in the Shell (movie and the series SAC)
Deathnote
Bleach
Naruto (original and Shippuuden)
Cowboy Bebob
Trigun
Yu Yu Hakusho
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Vampire Hunter D
Ninja Scroll (1 and 2)
Full Metal Alchemist
...

The list could go on but I'm forgetting some of them so I'll end it there. Suffice it to say I've watch animes for a long time and have read mangas of most of the series and movies that I've watch (if there is one to it).

I'll go and mention a different type of anime, and suggest Planettes. It's not really about fighting or anything, its a group that goes to space and cleans up space debri, etc... I know it doesn't sound like the greatest thing ever, but I really enjoyed watching it.

You can check it out on DVD, there is a complete collection for around $45 (contains all six volumes) if you are looking to buy an anime collection, or watch it whichever way works best for you, heh (I'm not implying illegal downloading here!).

Well, there's my suggestion... watch it!

Planetes FTW!

A majority of anime devolves into fan service or the tried-and-true mecha / fantasy formula. So, if you're tired of that stuff, this series is a good antidote. HAIBANE RENMEI is another good one (it's a slow-burn, but you might like it when you're in the mood). PARANOIA AGENT is a flat-out masterpiece.

That being said, there ARE good action oriented animes that tweak the formula with some interesting (and most importantly, entertaining) results:

If anybody here are just starting animes. Here is a list for you to start with:

1. Cowboy Bebop - One of the best animes I have seen due to its music, action sequences, and couple of very unique stylized direction in various episodes. Also the English dub is really good in this series.

2. Evangelion - A great anime to stir up debates on various things in life. It's a mind bender and could quite change your views on life in general.

3. GTO *Great Teacher Onizuka* - Mostly comedy, but gives a bit of Japanese slice of life. Focuses on the disconnection between teenagers and adults.

4. Outlaw Star - A really fun adventure anime with a really interesting world. Think of this like a classical pirate movie, but it takes place in outer space.

5. FLCL - A very trippy anime... period. Seriously this is just ridiculous anime, but it's just so cool for that.

6. Trigun - Story is kind of like Spiderman's whole "great power comes with great responsibility". Great action, comedy and story.

Tip: Try to watch anime in its native Japanese language with subtitle, usually the English dubbing is poor. It also helps you learn Japanese - which is always cool!

these are all MUST SEE animes in my opinion:

Cowboy Bebop - The show that in of itself became its own genre. One of the best animes ever made, a must see for anyone interested.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - The biggest mind-fuck-fest ever. Unless you watch it like 5 times, you will not get what is going on half the time.

Eureka Seven - Awesome mech style anime with people/mechs surf the skies

Deathnote - An amazingly written anime that became a phenomenon in Japan. Guy finds a notebook that can kill people when you write their name in it. But the plot is so thick that it has some of the most insane twists I've ever seen

Samurai Champloo - From the creators of Cowboy Bebop, takes place in feudal Japan but has this sort of urban hip hop twist to things.

FLCL - Quirky, funny and crazy animation styles fuel this short but sweet series about a kid who has robots come out of his head

Full Metal Alchemist - two brothers in a steam punk sort of world where alchemy and magic are a part of everyday life

Samurai 7 - also taking place in a steam punk universe where a village being ravaged by bandits are in search of 7 great Samurai to help them. based on the 1954 film Seven Samurai by master Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.

Rurouni Kenshin - takes place Meiji era Japan, Kenshin is mistaken for being a murderer

others to check out:
Speed Grapher
Initial D - racing anime, big in japan
Ergo Proxy
Blue Submarine 6
Grenadier
Gunslinger Girl
Azumanga Daioh
Big O
Gunbuster 2

Ill post more when I remember them

Well Naruto does have more adult oriented themes than DBZ however both were marketed as Shōnen or "young boy".

Demographic and how they are termed.
* Shōjo is Japanese for "young lady" or "little girl". These are generally targeted at girls. Examples: Fruits Basket or Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch.
* Shōnen is Japanese for "young boy". Examples: Dragon Ball Z or Digimon .
* Seinen is Japanese for "young man" and normally includes teenage or young male adults. Examples: Oh My Goddess! or Cowboy Bebop
* Josei is Japanese for "young woman". Examples: Gokusen or Honey and Clover.
* Kodomo is Japanese for "child". All children's series fall into this category. Examples: Hello Kitty.

You have to remember though, Japanese television isn't restricted by the same things we in the U.S have to be restricted to so their shows are allowed to be more violent and sexually explicit for younger audiences.

ETA My Recs:

>sidenote to this would be the Samurai X OVA's. I saw these before I saw Kenshin, and it messed me up. My understanding is Kenshin aired for a while and then the OVA's came out. I'd recomend watching part of the series, and then the movies.

I really liked Planetes (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=895) too! The part where you find out how Yuri's wife died because of debris hitting and depressurizing the passenger space plane she is on, I believe just after he convinced her flying isn't scary, is heart wrenching though.

Another short OVA with a interesting view of the future is Pale Cocoon (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4158). It's a story about an "archaeologist" on the moon rediscovering the existence of earth. The ending where he bursts out of the moon surface on a hacked elevator is amazing.

Yes, thats the first thing it improves upon. The second being pacing. There's no multiepisode "powering up" scenes(at least, not till Shippuuden), and theres no "every character but the main character is useless" syndrome.

When Naruto started, I love its battle scene, they really have strategy in the fight. (especially Shikamaru Nara, love this character, both his wisdom and lifestyle) But now Naruto is almost invincible when he transforms into the demon fox and everything is just hand to hand combat.

Must admit that I agree, although I only use it to assess the quality and target audience of the series, because in the end it's the story that counts for me. I really liked the SnM (http://tracker.anime-kraze.org:5277/index.html?filter=Seirei+No+Moribito) series, but I don't think the opening is all that great. Some scenery shots are a bit bland and I personally like the ED song better. It however doesn't have a big difference in animation quality with the actual weekly story like Naruto has. Don't really watch that any more (switched to the manga), but every time I see one of my friends watch it I think "If only the animation of the show was as good as the OP".

Two extremely high quality anime miniseries are:

The Record of Lodoss War: an anime set in a very D&D Style high fantasy world which is something rarely seen, with very dynamic characters and storyline that will keep you watching. Some spectacular fight seens and spellcasting as well. It's kind of hard to find and a import copy will cost you a pretty penny, but its worth it.

Gundam 8th MS Team: If you are a fan of any of the Gundam series, or even if you aren't, 8th MS Team is a wonderful, fairly short miniseries about a small team of Mobile Suits and their various missions. Great characters and an amazing ending. You'll be sad to see the characters go.

I found Record of Lodoss war easy to get...of course I was into anime and buying it all the time around the time Lodoss War came out. And I hope you mean the OAV not Legend of the Heroic Knight or whatever the TV series was(although it had THE BEST opening EVER...and the art for that was tons better than the show) anyway. I still have the OAV DVDs...

It's totally D&D...

Ok not going to bother all 12 pages but the first 6 had some glaring omissions.

Paranoia Agent - Very neat, great art with a wonky plot. Only 13 episodes long and it ties up nicely at the end, which I can't say for most anime.

Tekkonkinkreet - If I could only take one anime with me to a deserted island this would have to be it. Its a movie and you can get it on Netflix, dont d/l it because the animation is absolutely beautiful and you'll be robbing yourself. Its based on Taiyo Matsumoto's Black & White if that helps sell it.

Noir - Sexy assassins kill for money, very dark and violent.

Read or Die - I think its a 3 part OAV but very good as well. A little bit on the lighter side so many not be for everyone.

Full Metal Panic! - I can only recommend season 1 really. Ignore the premise (solider protects Japanese school girl...) cause for some reason the humor hits me just right. Also has robo fights so its a win win.

Shin Getter Robo - My favorite giant robo anime, its sort of retro styled. Very good but may be kinda hard to find with subs.

Gasaraki - Kinda gundam like but less whiny japanese man/boys. Has a nice anti-American themes as well.

Ok thats all I got for now but if you only pick one of these get Tekkonkinkreet.
