View Full Version : Abe Vigoda and the Hermaphrohawk's Sapphire Claw - General Discussion for 8/15/07

****, I forgot to post this earlier.
Discuss things in as general a fashion as you see fit.
Two topic starters:
Have you ever been on a blind date?
What is your most treasured possession?

It’s freaking hot here today, supposed to hit 105. The bad thing is 2 A/C units are down in the building and the third that is covering our part of the building is mercifully hanging on for life.
Have you ever been on a blind date?
no, but my wife knows a guy that had sex with a deaf girl just to hear what it would sound like when she .... nevermind
What is your most treasured possession?
My collection of skin suits. I always make them put the lotion on or they get the hose.
paper

I'm still trying to figure out a way to perfect that. I need something for them to put the lotion in. Some kind of bin or satchel. But those don't seem right. It should be something with a handle so it can be lowered up and down on a cord. What do you use?
labor_days
08-15-2007, 05:16 PM
a basket?
(ignore this parenthetical sentence)
What do you use?
A nice picnic basket. There are a few reasons why.
1) The wide handle lends itself to balanced hauling.
2) Light-hearted and whimsical approach keeps those in the pit calm. As everyone knows, panic will stretch out the skin.
3) It allows me to pretend that I'm Yogi Bear without feeling too creepy about it.
My name is Fred and this is my picnic basket manifesto.

So, I just got my AppleTV in the mail. Hooked it up and I've been testing out some content.
If you're on the fence about picking one of these up, it's time to hop over to the side where the grass is greener. In a nutshell, I'm really impressed. The picture quality is much better than I'd expected. If you've ever downloaded a TV show or movie from iTunes and then played it full screen on a non HD monitor, you might have the same trepidation as I had going into this purchase. These are not the highest resolution movies, but you'd have to be a complete videophile to find disappointment in the quality of "The Office" episodes on AppleTV. It's very close to what you'd see on an HD broadcast, and miles beyond SD on your HD set.
Full review coming this weekend.

I was watching the newest episode of the Fresh Ink podcast on my iPod this morning and Blair Butler had a story about this art show in LA called Crazy 4 Cult. It was so cool.
Basically artists create works inspired by cult films. Some of the art is amazing. Apparently you can buy prints of these here (www.crazy4cult.com), i think i might pick up some.

Glad you're enjoying it. The AppleTV does do what it sets out to do very well.
That said, I found the device a bit too limiting for me. I really wanted a DVR & media server with a nice frontend. AppleTV filled one out of three of my criteria.

Yeah, I would have liked a DVR as well, but until I can afford a Tivo (with service) this is gonna be a nice addition to my entertainment center. Great for showcasing videos I've made myself. And since I'm taking night classes, I'm probably going to buy a season pass to Office season 4.
I went with the 160 GB hard drive, so it's time to start filling this thing up.

See that's my problem. The owners are trying so hard to get fans it's scary. It reminds me of a kid playing Monopoly, he buys up Boardwalk and Park Place and spends all his money putting hotels on them. Then when time comes for him to land on another players spot he has to mortage the properties and loses any chance to actually stay in the game.
They're putting to many eggs in one basket with Beckham. He's good, there is not denying that, but if he's the only good thing in the club, all he'll end up doing is making everything else look like crap. Not to use another metaphor but it's like putting nice rims on a '87 Ford Taurus.

I honestly don't know what I would do with my DVR. I love mine. It remembers to record stuff even when I forget it's on.

DVR's are the most life changing appliances anyone can own. I haven't willing seen a commercial in years and almost never miss a programme (sometimes the power goes out). It is so wonderful to be able to skip through the nonsense, pause when you have to use the loo or simply watch a show on your time table.
Don't think you gotta get a Tivo either. The DVR's your cable provider hand out are just as good. Anyone telling you different either got a lemon or wants to feel good about paying for a Tivo. Oh yes, I've owned both.
DVR <3, for life.

Also some cable companies have made it so you can't use a tivo and have to get their dvr and pay for their dvr service. I had a buddy go get a tivo and pay for a year service and get home hook it up and it didn't work. Called his cable company only to find out it was worthless because they only allowed their boxes to be able to record from their supply.
I'm not exactly sure how but they have figured out how to do it.

Tivo revolutionized my entertainment life. I can't imagine watching TV without it. I love being able to watch a show when I want to watch it - and sans commercials too! My only regret is that the HD on my Tivo is not as large as I would like. Set on medium, I can record up to about 80 hours. I wish it was larger so I could record/keep more programs. But I do have a DVD burner which is a plus.

When I switched over to HD cable, I rolled my own DVR/Linux box because of limited HDD space. I really wanted to be able to archive shows for later viewing and/or push them out to different rooms/devices of the house as well.
Sure there are some trade-offs building your own but ultimately it's more flexible. Besides, the cable company only charges a few bucks for the set top DVR. Which is nice to have alongside your own (for the girlfriend in my case).

yeah you are correct. I will be really pissed if he stands up and says he did it and then they go okay 10 month in jail, a fine that he can easily pay, and a slap on the wrist. the NFL will then go ok you are out this season and that will be it.
RIOT!!!
He's probably looking at 15 months of which he'll serve a year, and some sort of suspension in which a portion will run concurrent with his sentence. He'll be out of football for this season and next, and will then need to find someone to take a chance on him once he's eligible again. Tough sell.

If there's anyone wondering why I'm so pissed about this, it's not just the dog fighting. That's repulsive. But who ****ing hangs and electrocutes dogs? That's seriously insidious shit.It bothers me to know end how small people think crimes like this are. A person who electrocutes and kills an entire warehouse of dogs will probably end up with less jailtime than a man who murdered one person. I admit, there is a reason people are valued higher than dogs, but thats just unjust punishment.
For example, a piece of New York Law:353. Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; failure to provide proper sustenance
A person who overdrives, overloads, tortures or cruelly beats or unjustifiably injures, maims, mutilates or kills any animal, whether wild or tame, and whether belonging to himself or to another, or deprives any animal of necessary sustenance, food or drink, or neglects or refuses to furnish it such sustenance or drink, or causes, procures or permits any animal to be overdriven, overloaded, tortured, cruelly beaten, or unjustifiably injured, maimed, mutilated or killed, or to be deprived of necessary food or drink, or who wilfully sets on foot, instigates, engages in, or in any way furthers any act of cruelty to any animal, or any act tending to produce such cruelty, is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, or by both.
Let it be noted that this is in no way about politics, I just mean it's the way people generally act.

It goes both ways. There are people who would step over a homeless person to push a whale back in the ocean.
Just to put things in perspective the NBA ref who fixed some games and was involved in gambling is looking at 20 years.

I don't mean to start something, and I want to preface this by saying that I love San Francisco, but I'm astounded by the number of homeless people there are in a place that's seen as a bastion of civil rights.
Funny story. I and my family was walking around in Union Square and this obviously mentally ill woman starts yelling incoherently at the top of her lungs while stumbling around in the middle of the street. A homeless guy that was sitting close to us with a bucket in his lap stood up and yelled, "hey! Keep it down! Some of us are trying to work over here!" My brother gave him five bucks.

I was voted "Most Artistic".
That year our yearbook people tried to be "different and cool", so they came up with some "hip" new categories. Well one of the new category was "Best Beach Bod". When time came to do the whole voting thing, one of my friends suggested that we should influence the vote. So next thing I know a group of 20 guys were going around trying to get everyone to vote for me as best beach bod. The humor in this is that I'm a stand in for Chris Farley.

Why don't you guys try to see things from my perspective. I'm a Christian-Conservative and I'm of two very differing opinions of the world, one is that I'm a firm believer in justice and the other is that I thank the Lord every day for the grace that he's given me and am in no real position to judge others.
What I did was state my thoughts (the abortion comment came from interviews I have seen/read of people lambasting Vick who have previously stated their firm support for abortion, it was not directed at any of you.)
I honestly consider you guys to be friends and the insults of "ignorant" that have been directed at me over the past few posts honestly did hurt in a way that I haven't felt since one of my best friends left my school and (intentionally) lost touch with me.

Even if you believe that pro-choice advocates who are lambasting Vick are guilty of hypocrisy, you have to see that there's something evil about training dogs to kill each other and then executing the weaker animal. IT's not simply criminal. It's evil. It's hurtful in a way that smoking illegal substances isn't. Yes, drag racing puts people in danger, even innocent bystanders. It's ethically bankrupt. But as bad as you think those activities are, dog fighting is a level unto itself.

Not really an opinion as much as my internal struggle to give more credence to my sense of justice and sense of grace. My sense of justice thinks that Vick should have all of his wealth taken and be thrown into jail. My sense of grace is the unrealistic part of me that wishes that humans could have the same sense of grace that God has. I know we can't do that, but when it comes to things other than the taking of human life I begins to question how we as law abiding citizens and essentially those who direct how laws are carried out by our votes should approach things such as this.

This whole celebritity thing is bothering the living crap out of me. I cringe when I see my mom pick up a tabloid in the grocery store while waiting in line. I don't know if its the fact that when I open the Daily News the first thing I see is a headline about a celebrity. Or when watching CNN or some other news channel they 9 out of 10 times are talking about celebrities. I could also be the fact that I live in California and there is nothing else to talk or write about but in acutality there is. There are worst things going on in the world besides Lindsey Lohan having a meltdown or Brittany Spears being an awful mother. People are dying or getting kidnapped in other countries, Hurricanes are happening. Is anyone talking about that?
I think it was Peter Gammons during a Sunday Night baseball game months ago saying that anyone with a camera phone can become a "journalist" today. That in a way disturbs me.

That in a way disturbs me.When I flew to Toronto, two out of ten satellite tv channels working were CNN and Star! TV. CNN was covering the trapped miners live, and Star! TV was, well, gossiping. Yet walking down the aisle I wanted to cry seeing the amount watching Star.

I'm really hurt.
If you guys were to go back through my 1,600+ posts, never would you find me to have done anything other than contribute to the board's conversations. Yes, I'm opinionated, but so are we all, that's part of the reason we're here as opposed to some other, juvenile board.
It's quite alright to be a Christian or a conservative. That shouldn't even come into this at all. This has nothing to do with politics.
However, what Vick & others have done is some the lowest and most barbaric acts human beings are capable of. Vick was committing a crime. Of which one would hope anyone with decency, Christian or not, would be repulsed by the brutality of.
The blaise tone of your post makes it seem as though those who are against such brutality are overreacting. Bringing PETA & Pro-Choice into it only underscored a tone, which on the surface is saying; "Training dogs to kill for sport, beating them, electrocuting them and murdering defenseless animals isn't as bad as abortion. Vick seems like a pretty swell guy once you get to know him after all".
You have not lost my respect either, Six. No one wishes you to censor yourself. But you must choose your words a bit more carefully.
This was a terrible, debasing crime and society would be the lesser for abiding it.

I've thought a lot about this and I have decided that in this situation justice must be my overriding response.
Do I think that "Training dogs to kill for sport, beating them, electrocuting them and murdering defenseless animals isn't as bad as abortion"? Absolutely, but in the same way that I think that Dark Night Returns is better than Watchmen or that a Fillet Mignon is better than a prime rib, yeah, there's a difference, but it's so slight that it doesn't really mater.

The whole you are digging is really pulling up to the six foot mark. I understand why people are agaisnst abortion. I would never be okay with a wife/girlfriend having one, but I see situations where it would be necessary.
Scenario A: A crack addict is raped on the street. She knows she cant look at the baby without remembering the brutal act. She also knows theres a good chance her bad habit could screw up the baby in a serious way. Within a week of finding out shes pregnant, she gets a safe, clean abortion.
Scenario B: Micheal Vick bets money on a dog in a brutal dog fight. This dog loses, so they electrocute it. Another of his friends bets on another dog, in a following fight, and that dog loses. They hang it. Finally they pit two more dogs against each other, putting them into a stir crazy rage, and forcing them to fight. The weaker dog loses. They shoot it.
Literary critiquing is no damn comparison. Again, you haven't lost my respect, the same way I hope not to have lost yours. This is just a terrible, and losing, argument.
