Hey! Fellow tech and revision 3 forum users, a good friend of mine is trying to set up a home theater system and any addition input on this soon-to-be system would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a cut and paste of the email he sent me:

"what do u think about this:

52" Sharp Aquos (this one really isn't in doubt) $2780
Marantz SR5001 7.1 Stereo DTS $480
Marantz Progressive Scan DVD Player DV4001 $230

JBL 8" Soundpoint Ceiling Speakers SP8CII $139 Each
JBL 12" Sub $320

i'm not sure why we'd pay 230 for either the dvd player. what u think? Everything else, I dunno. I'm especially interested if you know anything about the Speakers and SubW. I can't really find any info and i'm a little leery of them. I'm fine with the receiver. This guy likes installing martantz stuff and it's the best price for that unit that your'e going to find."

could there be anything comparative to the set of speakers that the Installer is recommending? how about to marantz? the more options the better in my opinion!

-much obliged, albert.

Well, I don't know much about a/v stuff at all...that would mean I have to stay in one place and I tend to move.

BUT...as for a pricey DVD player...I usually pay more for one just because I one some Region 1, 2, and 5 DVD's and need that compatability. I also love to be able to play DivX, AVI, MOV, MP4, etc., on my players. So, it usually costs a little more for those less common options.

One dvd player you may want to consider for your friends home theater is the oppo 1080p up converting dvd player. Indigital reviewed it in episode 21. It plays dvds , dvix, and other formats.

If you are looking for another home theater reciever you might want to consider the denon av-4306. Here is a review on it from cnet.
