What was the last original movie you've seen. Not a sequel, tv show made into a movie, book adaptation, comic adaptation, prequel. The last truly original screen play that has been out. Maybe I'm a cynic but it seems that alot of the recent movies aren't original. Or maybe I'm an idiot.

how original does it have to be? everything's been done. hell, Shakespeare stole all his plots from literature, mythology and history. a lot of recent movies are crap because the public seems to like crap. and it is a lot safer to make a film based on a proven plot than to come up with something new.

I think he means in terms of how things play out and characters. The screenplay

Bubba Ho-tep. Nothing really screams "original" like a movie about Elvis in an old folks home with a black guy who thinks he's JFK and a redneck mummy zombie.

except it's based on a book: Bubba Ho-tep by Joe R. Lansdale from The King Is Dead: Tales of Elvis Post-Mortem

The most recent I've seen is Bon Cop, Bad Cop. Though it's basically a buddy cop movie, it has nice Canadian spin to it. Not the most intelligent of movies, but it's definately fun, so it deserves to be mentioned. It's also the first truly bilingual movie I've seen, so it's getting bonus originality points for that.

I was just goin for original in the sense of Spiderman isn't original, or the Danvici Code isn't. But say The Guardian is original unless it's based on some book by a diver that I didn't know about. Just seems like it's all sequels, prequels, comics, or TV shows.

L' Ultimo bacio - It's a really great film if you ever get a chance to watch it.

Also, shouldn't this be the "Last Good Original Movie You Saw" thread? Because I see "original" movies every week.

Well it mostly came from me and a buddy at work talking about the top 10 at boxofficemogo and i think there was maybe 2 that we thought were original. The rest were remakes, or sequel/prequel.

But the more people respond the more I realize this is the wrong crowd to throw this out to because we're the kinda people who go for indie/foreign or smaller films that usually are original.

And I never did answer but Crank would be the most recent I've seen.

The first feature film was "The Story of the Kelly Gang," but even that isn't oringinal because it's based on Ned Kelly.

Noep it wasn't based on a book. Original Charlie Kaufman screenplay.

Nothing is "original." Even Brick, which I enjoyed, is simply a retelling of classic noir movies in a modern and different setting.

I think we put too much emphasis on originality--granted there are far too many remakes and sequels out there. But, frankly, I just want movies to be good.
