View Full Version : Horrible Things You've Eaten

I was just wondering what some of the horrible things you people have eaten, are.
I, myself, have on non-consecutive occasions had a sheep's eyeball, haggis and cow brain. And none of it was good.
I also had the opportunity to try a sheep's testicle, but it was immediately after eating the eyeball, and... oh man, I'm gagging while typing this. I couldn't do it, and I felt bad, because it was culturally inconsiderate of me to turn it down, at the time.
How about you?

Never brush your teeth with a baking soda toothpaste and proceed to drink a Coke or Pepsi.

Haggis Burger ... edible, but not particularly appetising.
Witchity Grub ... I was tricked. I ate it and threw up when I was told what it was.
Snails ... actually the idea sounds horrible, but they are really quite good, and take on the flavour of whatever sauce they are cooked in (traditionally a garlic butter).
Durian ... tasty fruit, if you can get past the stench it puts out.
I have been offered rocky mountain oysters before. I chose to decline.
I just got back from Barcelona, and the markets have butcher shops that are dedicated to what I could only class as offal ... brains, hearts, lungs, whole sheep heads (skinned, but complete with eyes staring out at you), tongues, livers, etc. But the oddest thing there was the snout from cows - imagine peeling from the cheeks to upper lip of a cow - complete with nose - and selling that. Sorry - too weird for me.
I did try Foie Gras for the first time in Barcelona though as part of a "degustation menu". Wow. That was awesome - especially over the chanterel field mushrooms.

Token, what's Witchity Grub?
Evan, I'll eat straight wasabi. Yes, the green stuff.

It's actually witchetty, and it's a HUGE larvae. It's actually not that bad. I've eaten all sorts of bugs. They're usually pretty good, so long as they are crispy.

I spelt it wrong, and by huge larvae, kowgod is right - they are about the size of an index finger. When we used to go fishing, we would use these as bait for Murray Cod (freshwater cod fish native to Australia - now protected, but damn they were good eats :) ). My uncle did a lot of stock work (cowboy) with the Aborigines in Arnhem Land (Northern Territory/Queensland area in Australia). He developed a taste for grubs when he was with them. I didn't realise what it was he tossed me - it was crispy - like the end of a sausage that has burst its skin on a BBQ. He didn't tell me until after I had eaten it. If he had told me, I probably would have tried it, but I think it was the surprise that made me puke.

Aria, I'm not a fan of Sushi myself, though I think what I had was crab so I am willing to give it another go. I remember saving some of the "green stuff" so that I could put on my sister's lip while she was sleeping, heh.

Oh yeah - I went to a Vietnamese Wedding feast once. It was awesome. I love trying new foods (despite my grub experience).
On the menu were two things that were terrible though.
Jellyfish - "rings" of jellyfish, sliced, then lightly cooked (fried?). Like eating rubber bands.
Sea Cumcumber/Slug - OK, this was gross. It was like eating undercooked pork fat. I love me the crispy pork skins (crackling), but this was terrible.

I've gone overseas, and across the street to eat these types of things.
The best was my trip... down the block, to the ethiopian restaurant. Me and some friends wanted to try something new, so we went. We had no idea what to expect, so we told the host this. He said he would choose a wide variety of traditional dishes, and even serve us in a traditional manner.
So, in Ethiopian culture, it is traditional to hand feed your guests their first bite of food. So, here we are, sitting around a table with all sorts of things that don't even look like food, and all of a sudden our hosts start hand feeding us at the table!
It was wild. The first foods they fed us were actually fried beetles.
The rest of the dishes were actually pretty tame and fairly delicious. Lot's of goat, yams, plantaines, beans, all seasoned deliciously. Mmm. Good stuff.

People think of Ethiopia and think of the famine and civil war ... but Ethiopean food is great. They have some great "dry" curries (ie not swimming in sauce).
Where to try these things? Be adventurous. Travel is the best time to try new things, but even going into some of the "ethnic" neighbourhoods produces some great finds - and some not so great finds.
I still can't believe American like root beer - bleah ... tastes like cough syrup ;)

Hey man, Americans like cough syrup. I have to drink a bottle just to come to work in the morning.

Some of the best places to find what can most closely be considered to be "traditional" ethnic food is actually in ethnic grocery stores. I don't mean off the shelf, either. At least in Chicago, most really ethnic stores actually prepare and serve food in them, usually in the same area as the deli.
I tried pig, umm, ears and snout, at a Hispanic grocery. Not so good. But, I've also found some really, really good food at others.
(By the way, I happen to live in a very culturally diverse neighborhood in Chicago, so, choices are all around me)

Haven't tried wichetty grubs, but here in kiwiland we have huhu grubs, which I think are the same. Taste like peanuts when pan roasted. The grossest for me is offals. Liver & kidneys make me puke. And squid. Yeeuch. I need a bucket.

Haven't tried them, but Rocky Mountian oysters don't seem to be particularly appetizing.
Tomatoes absolutely kill me! The texture, the taste, the way people say "What do you mean you don't like tomatoes?", all if it. Food of the Devil that thing is!!

I tried them once and did not like 'em. Many people do, but one bite was more than enough for me.
I was forced to eat borsch once long ago. It was nasty!

In the 70's my mom was on a health kick like everyone else. So she got a recipe out of Prevention Magazine. I don't know what it was called but it was made with PLAIN gelatin and in the cup of flavorless gelatin was lettuce. Flavorless gelatin is NOT made for eating by itself let me tell you. Then add the lettuce in the middle. They do not go together. I think the name Prevention Magazine meant "don't eat this stuff".

Canine lovers brace yourselves....
As with Klitzy, I have eaten dog.
I had contract work in Hong Kong a few years back, and on one of the weekends was taken on a trip to mainland China. Hey, as they say - when in Rome... right?!
It did NOT taste like chicken! ;)
