So I picked up issue #3 of The Boys today and I must say, god damn. Ennis really knows how to pack a punch. If anyone knows what the title is talking about, please let's talk about it.

This is such a solid comic and it seems like it would be the set up for one of my favorite movies. Man oh man, anyway, let's talk about this issue. What'd you guys think? If you don't know, GO OUT AND GET IT! It's only on issue 3 and is now a monthly. It's the new Garth Ennis and it was mentioned on the drome about a month ago or two (or three?). UNH!

I read that shit. You know I did. And we'll see where it goes. We've been shocked. We've been provoked. Now let's see if we can get a bad ass story out of it. All things are starting to roll forward now and I have HUGE hopes for this series. I wanna see some superheroes get their asses kicked now.

I liked the 1st 2, don't have the 3rd yet. I don't have a job, so I make my brother buy the comics and then I get them when he's done with them. I'm still waiting for last weeks haul.

yeah, i just finished listening to your ifanboy thing tonight, and i totally disagree with those guys. There is much more than shock value to this entire series, the shock value, like most of other ennis' stuff, is just a bonus to his amazing dialogue, engaging story telling, and fast-paced, suspenseful timing. Dude, seriously, he knows exactly what he's doing, and I was shocked as well (it's quite hard to shock me). turn the page..."suck it!", laughed my ASS OFF.

Also, the set up and suspense for us waiting to see what The Boys actually DO is awesome. Seeing them do what they do is going to be amazing. So far we've had an AMAZING intro to all our great characters (at great length and awesomeness) as well as the antagonists. The fact that this series spends so much time on the most important part of storytelling (character development) does not "turn me off", it makes me care about the characters, it makes me care about what will happen in the stories, and makes me want to know what happens next.

THE BOOOOOOYS!!! (thanks again Jonathan)

So after jonathon recomended it i went and pick it up. wow im just waiting for the issue to really start rolling. "the seven" initiation had me cracking up. I had no prior knowledge to who ennis was but i really enjoyed the boys then one day at my favorite comic book store Jim Hanleys Universe I saw fliers that Ennis was gonna be there sigining books, of course i forget to bring my books so i picked up "The Preacher" and have addicted since. I see the boys with alot of potential to be good i just wanna see some superheros get there asses kicked. I think there more to butcher im thinking he got some powers of his own. ennis has said this book will "out preacher the preacher" so lets see what he does.

The Just a Pilgrim trade is also a good one for people who find Preacher to be too financially daunting. It's not as good a story but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

im still trying to figure out what can lil hugie do for them, and i wanna see exactly what it is the female can do. its refreshing seeing a realistic look at what "superheroes" do to "save" us. That first page in book one explained exactly what this book is gonna be all about.

I liked this issue, but I was hoping to see some action. All this anticipation about how the Boys are gonna f*ck over superheroes is killing me.

I must admit that when I first read the first issue of 'The Boys' I did not like it. But I just got round to reading issues #2 and #3. This is some of the most interesting stuff I have read in a while. I love the dark humour. I think my problem when I first read 'The Boys' #1 was that I couldn't really imagine how corrupt these superheroes are. I couldn't step out of the dc universe. I had a disdain for Butch. But now I just want them to take the ****ing superheroes down. I really like the character of Butch that he's more than just some guy with a really strong agenda he does actually care about things shown when he confronts "mother's milk" daughter. You just the sense that he knows exactly what he's doing just from that panel when the guy shows his gun trying to be flash and Butch just grabs it straight. I thought it was interesting that the newcomer girl to 'the seven' came from Des Moines as this is the town Brandon Routh (the new superman) came from. But yeah I definately wanna see more of what happens.

It's good that you go into The Boys. I love how gritty it is. It's almost perfect.

Dear The Boys-

Are you planning on going anywhere anytime soon? I love you and everything but after 4 issues, of which the first two were great, I've felt like we're just spinning our wheels. I know we both made promises. I promised to read every episode. And you promised to "outPreacher Preacher". And maybe you think you are.

But so far I don't. You see, like Preacher, you're showing me a lot of out there stuff. Some violence, some sex, some humor. But unlike Preacher, you're not really giving me much more. Preacher had some great characters with a clear goal and some rough bad guys who really wanted to keep them from achieving those goals. I loved it when Jesse and Cassaday and Tulip had to work through their personal problems against such an epic scale filled with action and intense situations.

But right now... you aint got none of that. There are a lot of sex jokes. A bum puked. There was some violence. But after four issues I'm starting to not really care where we're headed. I feel lost.

Can you work on this stuff? Please? I'd love to keep reading, but need to know that your committed to me too. Please stop being boring as hell and not going anywhere. The world needs better comics.

That "out Preacher" quote...Ennis said in a podcast interview that he just said that to get people hyped for the series. I'll give it until issue 12 to pick it up.

any one read boys?

I dont know why this thread was revived, but since it is, I'll go ahead and throw my opinion out there.

The Boys is the worst comic I read every month. I don't even know why I still get it except that I'm a whore. It's not funny (at all), it's predictable (we all saw the "Suck it" scene happening unless you're completely daft), and it's really not covering any new ground than in any other superhero universe title. Yeah, the premise seems different, but a group of people (who work for the government, btw) policing superheroes? It's Marvel Civil ****ing War. It's The Watchmen. You know what? IT'S POWERS BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS!!!

As much as I love Ennis, he's not doing ANYTHING new with this series, and I hopes it either goes somewhere quick, or stops basing it's humor on really obvious and unfunny shock jokes that don't make an actual Ennis fan twitch. Having sex with your boss? Please. I'll take Arseface any day.

Okay, so I've mentioned before that I used to buy monthly comics but switched to trades a few years ago to save money, and because I didn't have a good comic shop nearby. But then I started hanging out hear and watching Geekdrome, and suddenly I had a list of comics to check out that weren't out in trades yet. So I gave in, did some math, and decided it wouldn't kill me to buy some singles online. So I got 'The Boys' #1-4 (and #5 on the way).

I actually really like this series. I'm a big Ennis fan, so I was expecting it to be good, and so far I haven't been disappointed. But, I do feel that this isn't the hyped up 'out-Preacher Preacher' thing it was supposed to be. The first two books were a solid set up for the series, but the next two were kind of disappointing and didn't really give me a clear idea of where the series is going. But the main thing that got me was Butcher injecting Hughie with that serum thing - I don't know if I quite like where that is going.

But I've bought #5 on the strength of the first four, and I will probably keep buying this book monthly now that I'm into it, which is a victory I guess.
