I've been looking to make the switch to OS X for a couple of years now. I want to get a 2.0 GHz MacBook but my only problem with it is that they only come with 512mbs of ram, unless you upgrade. The cost is already a bit high for me at the moment so I would rather not have to spend the extra money.
I was wondering if anyone is out there running there macbooks on 512 ram and if they have any speed issues with that. I'm only looking to do some photo editing with iphoto, along with some home movie editing using imovie.
Does anyone know if the 512 will be enough for that or should I I upgrade to a gig?
Thanks

The more ram, the better! I have 2 Ghz macbook with 512MB of ram, and I am fine with it. You can always add ram later, and it is cheaper to get it somewhere other than through apple.

Everyone I know who has a MacBook has 1Gig. Everything I've read says running with only 512 is no fun, as the onboard video card steals system ram to use for video ram. Because of that, the more the better. I would say definitely go with 1Gig, but not from Apple. As the MacBook has 2 ram slots, all you need to do is buy a second 512 at first and not going through Apple for the ram, you'll spend about half as much on the ram.

I have a 2ghz Macbook with 512mb of ram and I don't think its too bad. I am going to upgrade to a gig myself soon though.

If you're doing any video editing, I'd definitely suggest at least 1 gig. But that isn't saying it would be unusable. If you don't HAVE to use your computer for editing, just get it, and take your time finding the best prices for some RAM and upgrade later when you need/want to.

You may also want to consider getting a MacBook Pro if your are doing video editing due to its graphics card.

Doesn't Apple screw you over by putting in two 256 sticks? So you're gonna have to buy a 1gig stick instead of a 512.
