This week, go all out with the similes and metaphors whenever you're describing something.

Last night I had this really horrific nightmare, but it was kind of cool because Batman was a side character. It wasn't like, ooh, it's Batman either. It was like a serious Batman story taking place in my nightmare. Kind of like if Steve Buscemi just showed up at the funeral for one of your relatives, but you kind of got the sense that he really did have some logical reason for being there, so it wasn't entirely random.

I had an interesting dream last night too. I was a lecturer. And I had a knock-out speech to give. I was pumped. Couldn't wait. But the thing was - I was last. People in the audience kept disappearing during the lectures before mine. Hardly anyone was left when I finally gave my lecture. Talk about a bummer!

I had a similar situation in real life. I was reading a short story for a contest at my university. I got up, walked to the podium, and 75% of the audience got up and left. Later I found out it was because it was the end of a class period, so some of the professors were dismissing their students before I started, so as not to interrupt my story. Kinda backfired, not gonna lie.

Something similar happened to me in college in my junior year field production video class. I made a mockumentary about this really rudimentary video game that me and my friends played and I was really proud of it and I was scheduled towards the end of the showcase and the video RIGHT BEFORE MINE was a 20+ minute piece (eveyone else's were 5-7 minutes) about thrash metal. I think 90% of the audience walked out before mine was shown.

Blinky, the two-headed calf, RIP

Twoheadcalf A two-headed calf was born at the Hamstra Dairy farm on Tuesday but was euthanized yesterday. The calf was named Blinky because all four of its blinked simultaneously. According to dairy owner Greg Hamstra, the animal's lungs were collapsing, it couldn't stand, and it was "suffering." RIP Blinky.

Bulletproof school backpacks for frightening children

http://gobackpacks.com/library/KidsRunning-Backpacks.jpg

My School Backpack is a bulletproof child's backpack manufactured by MJ Safety Solutions of Massachusetts. Because your kids aren't scared enough, dammit.

While wearing the back pack it offers upper torso coverage on the back or it can be used as a shield for frontal protection of the head and upper body. Now, affordable protection is available, sealed in a lightweight back pack for everyday use.

Senior year, I did a whole thing about mulletheads (still funny back then), and they f'd up the audio so it wasn't clear at all what was going on. And thus signalled the end of my college filmmaking career.

Naked town to be naked again
Wednesday, August 22, 2007

http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2006/09/nakedmanREX_175x125.jpg

In a glorious victory for the forces of greater nakedness, Vermont's clothing-optional capital is stripping off its short-lived ban on public nudity.

Brattleboro passed a temporary prohibition on naturism a month ago, after an elderly tourist strolled naked through the center of town.

But city board members voted 3-2 on Tuesday to reject a proposed ordinance that would have made the ban permanent. When the emergency temporary ordinance expires next month, public nudity will no longer be illegal.

It is all about tolerance, one board member said.

'We in this country are going down a slippery slope these days,' said Dora Bouboulis, noting a national newspaper recently published an article about the emergency ordinance under the headline 'Tolerant town gets intolerant.'

Bouboulis did not say if they were naked while going down the slippery slope.

She said it was not up to the town to restrict anyone's right to dress or undress.

Before the vote, residents weighed in on both sides of the debate.

Michael Gauthier gave the board a petition with signatures of 967 people who support a nudity ban.

'What is the point, other than shock and awe, that the nudists are trying to make?' he asked.

More Naked News
Thursday, August 23, 2007

http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2006/09/nakedmanREX_175x125.jpg

In the latest news of the exploits of naked people, we can report that the condition of a man fell while climbing a cliff naked has improved, that the man who tried to ride wild ponies naked has been charged, and that the man dancing naked in the street evaded capture by the authorities.

First up, 21-year-old Steven Diehl of Pennsylvania, who was bady injured when he fell from some cliffs in Tioga County, saw his condition upgraded from critical to serious.

Police are still not sure why Diehl was climbing the cliffs in the nude.

They were called to the cliffs near Route 15 on Sunday, where they found Diehl, naked, clambering up the cliff-face. He fell off shortly after, and was flown to hospital by helicopter.

Meanwhile, in Assateague Island, Maryland, two men who were allegedly caught pestering animals while drunk have been charged with disorderly conduct. One of the men, 33-year-old Thomas Chapman, was said to be naked while attempting to ride the feral ponies that run wild on the Assateague Island seashore.

He was also reportedly trying to tackle deer.

In addition to disorderly conduct, he has also been charged with 'attempting to feed, touch, tease, frighten or intentionally disturb wildlife in a state park.'

And finally, in Florida, a man who was dancing naked in the streets of St. Petersburg has escaped capture by the police.

The cops were called to deal with the nude dancer at around 6am on Thursday – but when they got to the scene of the naked dance, no naked dancer was to be found.

Police are unsure where the naked dancer went.

Tragic end for Skippi the escaped kanagroo
Thursday, August 23, 2007

http://www.turtletrack.org/Issues02/Co04202002/Art/Kangaroo_jumping.jpg

An escaped kangaroo called Skippi, who had been on the run for three weeks, has been run over by a car in southern Germany, police said on Wednesday.

Skippi's body was found on a road about 25 miles from the farm he fled in early August, said a spokesman for police in the southern town of Krumbach.

'I don't think it was a deliberate suicide,' the spokesman said, giving us the benefit of his scalpel-sharp forensic insight into kangaroo behaviour. 'He was just hopping about.'

The grey and brown Bennett's kangaroo had evaded all attempts to recapture it, although there were sightings near a railway line earlier this month.

A driver spotted Skippi sitting on the road early on Wednesday morning, but he was dead by the time police arrived.

The spokesman said the owner had declined to identify the body, insisting that it could not be Skippi. However, police said the corpse matched their description. Moreover, no other kangaroos had been reported missing in the area.

Anyways point is I was very isolated and missed loads of stuff that happened and just found out Weiringo died?!?

Well, last night was one of the best nights of my life.

Our football team, after going 1-9 last year began our official season (our game last week was a scrimmage) with a 14-7 victory over one of the three top rated teams in our division. This is totally a God thing and that would have been plenty for one night but...

Remember that girl I was thinking about asking out earlier this summer? Well, I decided on Wednesday that if we won last night, that I was going to ask her out.

Oh that's not good at all. Down here all we did was play with candy cigarettes. If you do it when it's cold it looks like you're exhaling smoke!

Also, canadian smarties sound as lame as american smarties. And just because rockets is a more exciting name... doesn't make them any better.

Oooo now that we're on canadian candy, one of my favorite topics, do you guys still have rock candy? Definitely. You slize the banana a little bit down the middle and stuff it with chocolate chips and marshmallows. Then you wrap it in tin foil. You can cook it over the fire, or just a barbecue. Probably an oven to, I've never tried. Delicious though.

I watched a show once, about an entire culinary school devoted to cooking weird crap like that. They made the crickets on a stick, dipped in candy. Looked tempting actually.

You know what is worse than orange peanuts? Chocolate oranges.

I had completley forgotten those existed and how delicious they are. Thank you. They're almost as delicious as real oranges. And how freakin' cute can you get with all those little peices? I might just pick one up at the grocery store tomorrow.

I just finished taking gym class online! That is quite possibly the easiest 3 credits I have ever recieved. I am the least athletic person on the planet. You know that kid in everyones gym class who was always the last one picked? Well I was the kid who didn't get picked at all. My class usually had an uneven number of kids, which meant I sat out a lot, or just ended up partnerless. Online gym is the best thing since sliced bread. In fact, I think the man who pre-sliced bread did it by accident while trying to invent online gym. "Waterpolo teams have 11 players, true or false" after about ten of those questions, I had to fill out a log of 30 hours of physical activity over the summer. The kicker? Anything counts. "Four hours, walking at the mall" "Half an hour, walking to work" "Sixteen hours general excercise (like I actually did that, that doesn't mean I can't write it down. I'll never meet this teacher in person)". This is amazing. I have never before had a 90% in gym.

Owen Wilson Attempted Suicide

Report: Actor Owen Wilson in suicide try

Published: Aug. 26, 2007 at 10:52 PM
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Actor Owen Wilson was taken to a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., Sunday, reportedly after attempting suicide.

Wilson was transported to St. John’s Hospital. Citing sources, The National Enquirer and Star magazine said the star of "Wedding Crashers" and "Starsky & Hutch" had cut his left wrist and taken an undetermined amount of pills.

He was found by a family member who called for help.

Santa Monica police confirmed only that the actor had been taken to a hospital, TMZ.com reported.

"On Sunday Aug. 26. 2007 at 12:10 pm officers from the Santa Monica Police Department responded to a medical assistance call from the Santa Monica Fire Department,” the police said in a news release. "The person was transported to a local hospital where they are being treated."

Citing medical privacy laws, the police did not release any further information.

The Enquirer said Wilson’s wrist was stitched and bandaged at the hospital, and that Wilson would “be detoxed.”

A call to Wilson's publicist was not immediately returned. TMZ said.

DVRs have earned the enmity of broadcasters and advertisers alike by enabling viewers to easily skip their least favorite bit of the TV watching experience, commercials. Another group may be moving the DVR further up on its list of disliked technologies in the wake of Ofcom's fourth annual report on the state of the UK's communications market. In the survey, 31 percent of DVR owners said that they are watching fewer DVDs.

It's been a long time comin', but it looks like DirecTV's bonafide video-on-demand service is nearly ready for primetime. Judging by a descriptive thread over at DBSTalk, the service -- dubbed DirecTV on Demand -- has been rolled out in beta form to at least some users, so here's a quick look at what you can expect. First off, DoD will reportedly "be available for internet connected HR20's that are running on a compatible version of software," and requires that a user request a program via the 'net or through their HR20, after which the DVR "downloads that content via the internet, and stores the downloaded content just like any other recorded program." Feel free to hit the read link for all the nitty-gritty details, but for those into abridged versions, click on through for a few key points...

I am pretty sure it needs to be digital.

A digital video recorder (DVR) or personal video recorder (PVR) is a device that records video in a digital format to a disk drive or other medium. The term includes stand-alone set-top boxes and software for personal computers which enables video capture and playback to and from disk. Some consumer electronic manufacturers have started to offer televisions with DVR hardware and software built in to the television itself.

Didja hear how Canada got its name? There was a big gathering, and nobody could decide on a good name for the new nation. Finally, being nice folks, they decided to draw Scrabble tiles from a barrell, and the results would be the name of the new country.

The first tile drawn was a C.
"C, eh!" said the drawer.

The next tile was an N.
"N, eh!" was the next answer.

The last tile was a D.
"D, eh!" the fellow said.

And thus was a nation born.

There are lots of neat areas in the Southland, but downtown LA isn't one of them. LA doesn't have a "downtown" in the sense that other big cities do. There is a downtown, but you wouldn't want to live there.

For those thinking about going to Ireland--go. It's a wonderful, hospitable country. I've been over a couple times, and nowhere else in Europe have I met such friendly people. They like Americans better in small groups, rather than big posses.

One thing I was told by several Irish people is that they get irritated when Americans come over to Ireland and say they're Irish (as opposed to saying that their great-great-great-great grandfather immigrated during the dark days following the potato famine).

I know the appeal of a vagrant life to a youngin. But you might try living on the cheap instead, just for a little umm.... security? Like sharing an apartment, living in a basement, or a commune are all neat ideas. I'm interested in what kind of area you're looking for. What draws you to LA?

LA? **** that. I thought you were talking about any other city in the world. Honest to god, the last place I ever want to have to go. As someone moderately serious about screenwriting, I'm dreading having to put my time in there.

He's going for a little "On Walden Pond" action. A bit of the wanderlust. I sort of wish I could slash the tether, unchain the anchor, and enjoy some drifting. Free and easy. Then again I'm sort of a masochist, so the challenge of living off the land is appealing. My belly's too soft though.

whatever you do, Esophagus, have fun but be safe, yeah.

Absolutely, just make sure you're doing what you want to do!

I have no desire to live in California. Ever. I want to move back to seattle something sick, but I'm sure I'll live here for awhile. Then I'd like to put some time in in the Northeast, NYC probably but Boston is a posibility too.

I have no desire to live in California.

Most people's concept of California is either San Francisco or (more likely) LA. California is a huge state (3rd biggest in the US, 2nd biggest in the continental US), with a huge variety of climates and cultures.

In my humble (and of course, completely unbiased) opinion, there is no more beautiful place in the US than the stretch of California coast between Santa Barbara and Monterey.

same, if i had the balls to up and drop everything i think it would be an amazing eye opening experience (as long as i still had the security to come back to my old life eventually)

it would give you a greater appreciation for what you have and you'd be far less dependant on material possessions

Well anyplace that has 4 seasons is a pretty horrendous choice if you don't have anywhere to sleep. I guess that might be the appeal of Cali.

As someone moderately serious about screenwriting, I'm dreading having to put my time in there.I really didn't enjoy LA. I've been a few times and it's kind of meh. Nice, expensive, shopping, but not my kind of city. Then there is that one strip, right down Venice Beach, and it's just the most amazing place. So nice, and so beautiful. Also, three quarters of the homeless are trying to do something about it. My policy has always been, that if I see a homeless person playing guitar, or miming, or doing caricatures, something at all, I'll give them what I've got. But, if I see a homeless person with a sign, laying there, then they don't deserve my cash.

Edit: The entire paragraph I had written came off preachy and lame, and the writer in me told me to scrap it. Lets just say being homeless for a while sounds like it could be potentially liberating. I'd only be in it for about a month or so, if I lasted that long.

I don't mind diversity so much. But why do the people have to be so different?

;)

My thing with LA is just that it's probably the opposite of what I want from a place to live. For one, I don't drive. I like walking and taking the train. I'm also not an ambitious person. I play it low key with my homies. I also hate the heat. I'd rather be sitting in a snow drift, counting my toes as they fall off than spend fifteen minutes in anything over 80 degrees. I'm not the average bear.

And I like nothing better than to be in the middle of a 40 below Alberta winter, sitting in my basement, in bed, in nothing but my boxers. I live for the cold.

As for Labor, how did you find that? I'm sure it gets absolutely hellish, especially when its not planned, and you have nothing to bounce back to, but was it any fun? I love stories like this. I had a friend who had a relative that lived on the streets for a while, and eventually moved into a little shack off a farm with no power or water. He died with loads of riches, he just never felt the need to use them. Simplicity is elegance.

I'm with you. Those are two big reasons California does nothing for me. I love public transportation, and hate hate hate heat. I usually say I love the four seasons, and the changes. I loathed the year round summer when I lived in Florida. But I guess I should amend that to say that I do love that our summer is a litle shorter and our winter is a little longer. You can always dress warmer, but when it's hot there's nothing you can do but suffer.

Well, the first time I was homeless was when I was 17 or so. That wasn't a fun experience at all. Without going into things much, someone gave me a helping hand out of the literal gutter. There was nothing glamorous about it.

The second time, I was merely without a place of residence. It was fun traveling, meeting people, finding my place and such. Cliched perhaps, but I wouldn't give that time in my life back. Good friends, good experiences. Even the bad ones.

I feel like I haven't fully decided what I want to do yet. I don't think I want to be a screenwriter enough, ya know? There's people out there who want to be a part of it way more than I do. So maybe it's not meant to be.

If I can do something with short format scripting, that'd be great. I'm also really excited about audio production and want to learn everything I can about it. Not that I have a voice for books on tape, but something in that field would be cool. I like publishing and advertising too. And on the side...it's all about writing those books for kids and young adults. These are the things I care about right now, and I hope that something comes of it.

It's an exciting time to be a story teller. There are so many venues. Even free venues. So I'm not worried about presenting my ideas to the world. I'm just trying to get some stability here in Philly. Gonna move out in a year or so, set up a little office and really start cranking out some pages. Of something. What it is, I dunno. But I'm excited about it.

But I think that is something that I just think is an absolute love of mine, and I'd do it with or without money. It's also a tough way to make money. At the moment the plan is to open a comic book / record store a ways down the line, and if anything comes of writing, sweet deal.

He said it was a lot of fun, with a lot of good times, and he wouldn't trade it for anything, but had he had to make the trip on his own means, it would have been terrible. If I do this, I definitely plan on going in prepared, with an easy way out.

I've always wanted to do voice acting, ever since I fell into doing some local radio commercials when I was a freshman. The problem is while I have a nice voice, I'm not so much on the... acting part. At least imo. But it's always that pipe dream in the back of my head.

Spend some time in Ottawa, where it gets to -45 below (Celsius) with the wind chill and you have shovel half a meter worth of snow once a week, and you'll start singing a different tune;)

the weather is the ONLY thing i absolutely HATE about my country, i'd take heat any day (as long as i can wear a t-shirt and shorts)

There really are a crap load of places now a days to share your stories with people.
I actually had a friend that made a few 'Zines and put them in a few music shops around Philly (Along with the 20 Thousand other ones).
Since the advent of Blogs and such, she really didn't think that anyone bothered with reading 'Zines anymore. Well low and behold she got an email from someone that wants to talk to her about a job writing for some magazine.
