This may just be the ramblings of a novice comic book/graphic novel reader, but I wonder if Y: The Last Man is going to be the next Watchmen, or Dark Knight Returns. If you think about it, Y, like Watchmen and DKR is receiving praise from the mainstream, more specifically, those who aren't even looking in the direction of graphic novels.

I was planning on making a case on why it should be considered as great as these two works, and why it will be placed in the same league in about 10 years, but I thought it'd be better if others agreed or disagreed with my assertion instead. So, what do you guys think?

A lot of people will say they want to reserve judgment until the series concludes.

I enjoy Y more than those works, but that's just my own personal perspective. That's not what you're asking.

I have this strange new theory rocking around in my head these days. I posed that "who's going to make the next Watchmen/DKR" question of the iFanboys, and the more I think about it, I don't think it will happen. Since there's so many different venues for media and so many different opportunities for sending and receiving this media. Think of it like flavors. When ice cream came around there were very few flavors. Vanilla and chocolate remain the standouts. But as time passes, more and more flavors are developed. Palates become more and more sensitive to variables. And depending on what flavors you come into contact with, your palate changes. There are too many different flavors now, too many different palates to allow for something so universally affecting as another Watchmen/DKR.

You've gotta find your own hazelnut pepperoni dill ripple.

Yep, but a lot depends on the ending.

Possibly? Although I would imagine something not quite as long (like more in the mini-series range)

(To be honest, I'm several trades in on Y and am just reading out of completist obligation at this point. Maybe I hyped the series up too much in my mind.)

So, what do you guys think?I agree, but I disagree. I think it will definitely be a classic series, but DKR and Watchmen recieve their praise for their literary achievement. But yeah Y, and in my opinion DMZ, are definitely going to be the classic series of our time.

It already is!!!

There was a conversation recently on what will be the next "big thing" and the consensus was it was going to come from out of nowhere or something like it.
There will never be another DKR or Watchmen. There will be others that will build upon them and it will not be in the same vein. Is there another Zep? Is there another Beatles? Never. But Radiohead happened, so did the Sex Pistols, so did _________ (you fill in the blank). There will never be another "so and so", but there will other classics.

Did anyone know Y will be so good all the way in its first year? I got on board around trade 6, cuz I'm a noob. I think it is/will be a classic and a revelation of what comics/graphic novels can be. It is totally different than the "other" classics we've mentioned and that's why it IS the "next classic". Regardless of the end, you can not undo the magnificient run it has been. While we comic fans may be to close too it, mainstream media, in years to come, after it ends, will find it and declare it "the classic" not us. We fans already have labeled it our classic.

Anyways, you nor I have a say in this, it is the collective masses so... let it play!

I'm kind of a noobe with Y, having just recently tried it out and now read thru v. 3. I like it. As a comics reader, I think there's better stuff out there right now (Fables for one), but I realize that's not the question. The question is whether this is going to be a kind of breakaway/crossover success. It's definitely got the stuff, no matter how it finishes. (Well, provided it doesn't end in a really lame way.)

Tangential question: Is the new movie set to encompass the whole scope of the story, or just set it up to be continued in later sequels?

They're coming out bi-monthly for the final run.

I'd say that Y is a great book, but i was so disappointed with the finale (where they reveal the cause of death) that it soured the book a bit for me. I know that this plot point really wasn't that important to the series as a whole, it was more about character interaction, but it was still a crux of the series and the reasoning behind it was kinda weak. I saving judgement until it ends (how many issues do we have left?) and i can't wait to see where the Yorick/Beth thing goes, the last two issues were fricking awesome! but, right now, i'd have to say no, it's not a classic in the same vein as watchmen or DKR

I agree there. I wasn't even convinced that Dr. Mann's father's explanation was true until a few issues later when it seemed like the subject had been dropped and his theory was likely the official line. I think they probably would have been better off simply not explaining it.

I love the series, but the length works against it, I think, with regards to being the "Next Great X." It's easier to hand someone a single Watchman trade than to hand them a dozen Y trades.
