View Full Version : 'Mad Men' - Season 1

Conor has introduced me to one of 2007's best new dramas, Mad Men on AMC.

They are halfway through their first (hopefully not last) season of 13 episodes, most of which are available On Demand. So if you have Comcast, hop aboard so we can all talk about it. New episodes air Thursday nights on AMC. Check local listings. Also available on iTunes.

Here's a synopsis:

What you are, what you want, what you love doesn't matter. It's all about how you sell it. From AMC and the Emmy® Award-winning executive producer and writer of "The Sopranos" Matthew Weiner, comes Mad Men, a provocative new primetime drama about how to sell the truth. Set in 1960 New York, the daring new series is about the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, an ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell while their private world gets sold. The 13-episode, one-hour original program produced by Lionsgate premieres Thursday, July 19 at 10 PM | 9C.

The Setting: In 1960, advertising agencies were an all-powerful influence on the masses. Personal and professional manipulation and sexual exploits defined the workplace and closed the deals. The high profile Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency created advertising campaigns – from cigarettes to political candidates -- better than anyone. It was a time of great ferment. Women had barely begun to come into their own. Librium and birth control were on the move. Ethics in the workplace, smoke-free environments, sexual harassment and ethnic diversity were workshops of the future.

The Premise: The series depicts the sexual exploits and social mores of this most innovative yet ruthless profession, while taking an unflinching look at the ad-men who shaped the hopes and dreams of Americans on a daily basis.

The Players: The series revolves around the conflicted world of Don Draper (Hamm), the biggest ad man (and ladies man) in the business, and his colleagues at the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency. As Don makes the plays in the boardroom and the bedroom, he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels. The series also depicts authentically the roles of men and women in this era while exploring the true human nature beneath the guise of 1960 traditional family values.

The problem with TV these days isn't that there's a lack of quality programming. There's plenty of great content out there, on cable and otherwise. But most of it gets buried in the surplus of crap. You just gotta be a pan-handler, sifting through the creek for a little morsel of gold. But, I understand if you don't have the time during these, our trying modern times. But that's what ol' Uncle Paper is for! Though Conor gets the credit for this one.

There's The Office, Flight of the Conchords, Sopranos (done now), Deadwood, John from Cincinatti, etc. But after I started buying TV DVDs I just couldn't stop, and now I usually end up waiting for the DVDs rather than tuning in. It gets pricey though.

I am now officially caught up. This show is addictive.

Conor, what the hell is going on with Don Draper and his past? This show takes a turn for the Brubaker all of a sudden. Crazy.

Also, bonus points to whoever can identify two actors on the show previously seen on Whedon-helmed series. And another from a show about one New Zealand's top folk parody duos.

I don't know, but Don is (as of right this moment) now officially my favorite character on TV.

I want to post more thoughts on this show but I am deathly ill and I'm afraid I'd come off as less than coherent. Actually, that would probably be par for the course.

Right there with ya. Don Draper is fascinating. Hamm has a cool range. Sometimes he reminds me of Jason Isaacs and other times he's a young De Niro.

Does Josh watch this? I figure he'd be all over something like this.

Anyways, feel better and then come back and we'll continue the conversation. This show is definitely worth talking about.

Coincidentally, the newest episode is on AMC right now, so in honor of that:

Which of Don Draper's ladies is your favorite?

His wife?
His artist mistress?
His department store owner mistress?

I used to not like the wife, but the latest episode turned me around on her. I feel for her now. But I think my favorite is Rachel, the business woman. I don't know why. She's smart and she's got spunk and she doesn't take crap. Those are probably good reasons. But then again, the artist is no slouch, either. She was good in this last episode also. Hell, they all were.

Damn you, Draper!

The great thing about this show is that every week I think it's the best episode yet. This week was no exception.

Don's increasingly bitter, rage-filled, jealous boss was devastatingly fantastic.

"My husband? He'd rather be drinking at lunch."

This whole Nixon advertising campaign could lead to some very interesting thematic explorations.

I love this show.

Why?

I love the exploration of the time when women were slowly starting to realize that they didn't exist as objects who were at the pleasure of men. And when men had to face the fact that women weren't beneath them and they realized that women were starting to know it too.

I love that everyone is living quiet, unfulfilling lives of desperation.... and they don't know why (see above for why... mostly).

I love the examination of the post-war American male.

I love the cast. Everyone is perfect.

I love Don Draper; he's fascinating.

Still loving the History of Violence element. Why does Don have these issues with his past?

Totally agree with your points, Conor. This show is really making use of all the historical and cultural themes available to it. It isn't just a period piece for the hell of it. I really, really hope this thing gets picked up for more seasons.

I'm only two episodes in, but I'm hooked already. I can't wait to be current, and actully watch it on TV. It makes such great historical and culture references, and it really isn't cheap with them. My personal favorite so far was the strippers. They really could have went the easy way and made her an anorexic big breasted woman that all of the audience expected, but they made it historically accurate even there. Not to mention a storyline that I can only see getting better. The entire cast is just so interesting. Like Conor said, I love that there are all of these completely subservient women that are starting to realize they carry a place in society, and that they'll have to make it for themselves. This could go in a million directions, not many of them bad.

Nope. It was during a pitch meeting where the client didn't like the approach, and Draper lit into him telling him that he's #4, and their approach hasn't worked. He looked at the man and said that. It was awesome.

I don't like that they dropped the whole Salvatore being in the closet thing after one episode. It had potential to go past that one moment he had, but it never. Also, the wiki calls him "the art director at Sterling Cooper; he is a closeted gay man". Did I miss that becoming official?

The season's not over, so we may see more of that subplot. They hint at it all the time. The episodes are usually centered on Don and his wife, and then one other character will get a dedicated Plot B or C. We just have to wait til Sal's turn comes up again. I agree though. I'd like to see more of that story.

Hm. That totally slipped by me in the last episode. But it's good to know they were at least trying to lay the pipe for this plot point.

We don't think she's pregnant or anything do we? Obviously weight gain like that wouldn't just be caused by pregnancy. She's adjusting to a new lifestyle, going out to all these lunches. But I can't help but wonder. It seems in line with what the series is trying to do. It would be interesting if she were having Pete's kid. They did make a point about her getting the pills though.

I don't think she's pregnant. Throughout the series they've lingered on her eating. There was one scene I remember standing out to me where she had some sort of stressful confrontation with someone in the office (probably Joan) and she went to the snack cart in the office and took a lot of food. I remember thinking that it was odd that they showed us all of that. Now it's paying off.

Then we'll know Hell hasn't frozen over.

Seriously, I think it deserves it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. And even if it does win, history hasn't shown that will make people watch it.

Damn this cynicism!

Man, let's hear it for giving Peggy everything she wants and deserves, and taking it away mere moments later. Badass.

Also, I'm fairly certain Joan is the sexiest thing to ever be on television. I don't even mean it in a crass way, but it's just an immutable truth.

I don't think anyone could disagree.

Eso, Conor, still waiting for my 5 bucks. :D

For ?

An unofficial bet of course.

I don't think she's pregnant. Throughout the series they've lingered on her eating.

I don't think it's pregancy. She eats a lot, and sleeps with Pete. We've seen Pete make fun of her weight. I'm guessing this is going to become a confrontational issue at some point. The tensions have already been laid.

Pay up!

Good interview with Mad Men's creator, Matthew Weiner in the Trib.

p.s. I started watching the show. Amazing.

Pretty mad.

Pete's a weasel. But Peggy's hardly perfect.

I really do think Don Draper is one of the most interesting characters on television. He's incredibly charismatic, while we're given constant reminders of just how repulsive he can be. Again, check out the Carousel speech I posted a bit ago. Even in that beautiful and sort of touching scene where he displays such childlike wonder, he starts off by calling the projector operator "sweetheart". While it's meant to be gentle, it's also really condescending and made me cringe a little. He's not a good person (for many reasons) but I still root for him because he'll inadvertently stumble into the awe of imagination (the cave painting moment with Harry). The glimmer of actual art in advertising. The truth.

He's a product of the time he lives in. I mean, I don't think that specific incident makes him any more repulsive than the lack of seatbelts or excessive smoking.

Oh, no, I know. I just meant that they constantly pepper in those moments of weakness. Or right after Don does something really incredible...he immediately goes and sleeps with his mistress, or says something a little insensitive to Peggy.

The subtle sexism, classism and bigotry in the show is far more effective then the more overt gestures.

I'm sorta shocked how unflattering Mad Men is about the era.

To all fellow Canadians, (since we don't have the pleasure of just going to iTunes) CTV is airing Season One of Mad Men on Sundays, and (I believe) will be airing Season Two when it starts. I think they're two episodes in already, but you should certainly start watching if you've never seen it yet.
