View Full Version : TRS Chatroom - How to
patch

This is an easy to use, straight forward guide on how to join the Totally Rad Show chatroom.
We have a Java app for those that do not wish to use a dedicated client. It can be accessed here (http://totallyradfans.com/?q=pjirc). It should log you in automatically. To change you're nickname when you are in just type "/nick [name]" and it should change for you. If it doesn't, that means that someone else on DALnet is using the name. So try another name.
Remember, the Java app is new. So if you have any issues with it, please post in the thread here and we'll try to take care of it asap.
For those that want a dedicated client, there are a few options.
ChatZilla (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/rt-messaging/chatzilla/)
Catzilla is alright, but lacks a lot of the real meat 'n' potatoes features of a real, full-blown IRC client.
Windows & Linux
I suggest X-Chat 2 (www.silverex.org). Now on Windows, there are two versions of the client, a paid version and a free version. The free version can be found at www.silverex.org.
For you Linux/BSD heads (Like Me), you probably already know about XChat, and how to get it, if you don't though.... check your distribution's package manager, it's bound to be in there, and only an apt-get, yum install, pkg_add, or emerge away.
MacOSX
there is a version of XChat, called XChat Aqua, but I'm not sure of the availability of it, or if the project is even still active. Your best bet, according to some of my applenerd friends, is a client called Colloquy (http://tinyurl.com/47xe2). You can download it from colloquy(dot)info.
Using XChat
All that stuff covered, actually connecting is easy, and here in this post, I'll go over how it's done in XChat, because that's what I use and recommend. Also, this little guide will get you set up so that you don't have to memorize all this stuff.
When you start XChat for the first time, you'll see a network list pop up. look through that list for DALNet. Select it from the list, and then hit edit. Once you're in the edit window for DALNet, check the box labelled "connect to this network on startup", and then under "channels to join", type #totallyradshow. Hit close, and then back in the network list. Choose a nickname as well as backup nicknames for yourself in the text fields above. Once you've done that, select skip network list on startup, and then hit Connect. XChat will now automatically connect to DALNet and join #totallyradshow whenever you fire it up.
Now that we have that covered, a few little things you should know about IRC and how to use it.
On IRC, there are lots of neat little commands you can use to do different things. most if not all IRC commands look like this: /command
here's a list of a few useful commands you should know:
/nick [name]
This Changes Your Nickname.
/me [action]
This outputs some text that says you're doing something. like so: *TuxOtaku is teaching the n00bs how to gr0k IRC.
/msg [name] [message]
This sends a private message to a given user, like so: /msg TRSJeff The Shield is freakin' awesomesauce! Note that only that user can see that message.
/part
Use this to leave the channel.
/quit
Use this to leave the channel and close the connection to EFNet.
/help
lists all available commands, also if you type this along with a command name, it will give you a list of valid parameters for that command, and how to use them.
There are tons of other commands you can use, but most of those, like kick, ban, and topic commands, are available for channel operators only
Also, In the chatroom, you will notice that we have a friendly little chatroom bot called RadBot. say hello by /msg'ing him, he'll remember who you are the next time you log on. As well, he can do some pretty cool stuff. Like set you up with a cool little tag line (also called info line) that will display when you enter the room. He can also pass private notes from you to other users, even if they aren't online.
That's about it, if you have any further questions, feel free to ask away...send a private message to TuxOtaku (http://revision3.com/forum/member.php?u=36095) on here, or email trsircquestions@gmail.com
Hope to see you all on IRC!
Credit goes to TuxOtaku for writing all this up. I just edited it.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a web based client?
No reason you can't opt to use a web client to connect to IRC. http://ircatwork.com works pretty well and has a very simple interface.
IRC client software just adds more power and flexibility to the experience. It's not entirely unlike using webmail vs a mail client. It may very well be that you don't need or want the power or flexibility. :)
Those of us who tend to spend a decent amount of time in IRC channels (like, say, those of us who might, maybe, occasionally do it from work), tend to favor clients over web apps. (Besides, web browsers are resource hogs already. Chat clients running in them only make em fatter. ;) )

We were on EFnet before, and because of the lack of services we were having some issues, so we moved to DALnet, and the only problem I've run into so far was last night it kicked me off. *shrug* no big deal, just reconnected and services reoped me.

I love the idea of having an irc channel set up, but the fact that it's being used for a mud rather than opening a new channel to play in is a little disclusionary. My only option is to set all the players on ignore and then it kind of negates the point of joining. Is it possible to keep any mud playing to a seperate side channel?

Its not being used to play a mud mate. We were talking about a game on the channel.

Just go to http://www.diggchat.net or http://www.rev3chat.net/ and once the window opens just click accept and you will auto join the chat network and the channel.
Give it a try.
No bull .. we've been running this for over a year now and have quite a few people discussing digg.com, revision3.com, IPtv channels, twit, and what not. A great community. New releases are published in the channel once they get out and users watch it live together, etc.
DALNet is a horrible chat network which is much more locked down, open for abuse and harder to manage for a channel. Everybody who joins ours comes in a child friendly proper moderated network, that's open, masks host addresses to avoid abuse and we don't have a problem with users making multiple connections or asking support questions.

First off. Please do not advertise your chat channel within the thread for our chat channel.
We've been doing pretty fine over at DALnet. It seems services drop late at night, but other than that it's been pretty fine. I guess we don't have a "child friendly proper moderated network". Because we support free speech. (See Amendment I.) We don't currently mask host addresses, but we haven't had any reported abuse so far.

Or like you know, the Javachat button on the TRS Site?
Anyway both rooms are up and running, once we pass on the code to JeffV the TotallyRadShow.com creator dude, it'll properly connect to the new room, won't affect any of the Javachat people in anyway. Normal IRC Client people just gotta change the address in their settings.
The only slightly annoying thing that arises from any network change is everyone has to register their nicknames, no email this time so all it is is
/NickServ Register YourPassword Your@email.com
While of course under your preferred nickname.

"The guys" (Which I'm guessing you mean the TRS crew) do not own or run the chat room, and the current Java app that is up is actually something one of our OPs threw together.
If an add oriented chat came into play I'm sure a good number of our users would be against it and just stick with what we have now and try to pull people away from the add based one.
I believe we will have a new app here in awhile that'll even work on iPhones! I know we have a Python app in the works, but I don't expect that to be coming out for awhile.
wideawakewesley
11-05-2007, 01:01 AM
When I say advertise, I don't mean an ad supported chatroom, I mean advertise the show via the chatroom. A meebo room, allows you to attach video clips to it that persist with the room, so that whenever anyone logs into the chat they gain quick and easy access to all that material at the touch of a button. It's a cool feature of meebo that I think perked the guys' interest and it would also be available on any device that had a web browser (e.g. an iPhone).
Not that the IRC chat isn't great, I certainly appreciate all the work that goes into it. I just think that the meebo chat presents the guys with a different way of helping promote the show, it's also tied in with all their excellent web-based IM interfaces and is very "hip" with the kids of today. Anyway, I mailed them about it a few weeks back and haven't heard anything since their original reply, so it's quite possible it didn't perk their interest enough.

When you start XChat for the first time, you'll see a network list pop up. The first thing you'll need to do is click "Add" on the right. Name the connect whatever you want. It really doesn't matter. Just use something you'll remember.
Once you've added a new server, click it so its highlighted and then click the "Edit..." button on the right. A new window will pop up. You'll see a server list at the top of this new window. Highlight the server listed and click the "Edit" button and type "trs.zone-9.net/6667" (without the quotes) in place of whats already there. Then click in the empty white space under it so it doesn't reset its self.
Once you've done that, go down to the "Channels to join:" field and type in "#totallyradshow" (Again, without the quotes.). The last step, make sure you have "Use SSL for all servers on this network" unchecked. If it's checked, it won't connect.
Now, click the "Close" button at the bottom of that window so it saves everything you've done, and click the "Connect" button on the main window and you everything should work smoothly!!

We are currently talking to Jeff Virgen, the webmaster for the TRS site about switching from the slow, clunky, ugly java chat to a Perl-based application called CGI:IRC. For any of you who have ever used the website, ircatwork.com, you've already encountered CGI:IRC. However, we plan to make some changes to our version so that it synchs up with the stylesheets on the site itself. I myself am also planning a Python-based web application that would be even more fleshed out than CGI:IRC and would have more features available to it.
Also, regarding wideawakewesley's meebo idea....baaaaad idea. Meebo is NOT IN ANY WAY A STABLE APPLICATION. It's in fact worse than java in terms of speed, as it's written entirely in AJAX. Now AJAX, while nice, and very powerful, is EXTREMELY TAXING on web browsers, expecially firefox, which already, as many of us know, has memory issues of its own. The reason IRC is a wise choice, is because unlike the meebo idea...it's far less taxing on both the web browser side of things, as well as the server hosting the TRS page. IRC doesn't eat up the same kind of bandwidth that a massive JavaScript application would. The reason for this is because with the meebo app, you're still processing requests to port 80, which is what any hosting company looks at first in their bandwidth graphs. With IRC, this doesn't happen, everything's on a different port, and a much smaller amount of data is being passed back and forth.
Anyway, the point of this whole meandering palaver of technical mumbo-jumbo is quite simple. IRC is by far the best tool for the job in this case, and everything else, for the reasons above, would be a sloppy, poorly-implemented, mess.

I have to say I've not seen any problems using meebo, but then I don't use Firefox. However until IRC can provide the connection of multimedia to the chatroom, I think meebo is a great additional way of promoting the show. I'm interested to see what the new python based version will look like though.

The problem also, as I mentioned...is that meebo would present the additional challenge of eating up more bandwidth. IRC is not NEARLY as bandwidth-intensive. Also, what exactly do you mean by "multimedia" because chances are, if it doesn't exist, I (or one of the other network admins) can code a script for the channel bot to make it a possibility.

Actually I think it's very useful. It's a great way to promote the show whether it's resource heavy or not and from my experience, it's not. In addition to the video's the chatroom is categorised and visible to all other meebo users, so it's a great way to attract new viewers.
Wes
p.s. On the bandwidth issue, it's hosted by Meebo, not at totallyradshow.com

Yeah, and some of us go to freakin' colleges where they apparently block irc. I've tried to bypass their blocks for about 10 minutes now, and to no avail.
